Description

It's like that scene in the movie about that guy.

On the mountain, on the street, under a shell or as a stand-alone, the Sierra Designs Women's Gnar Hooded Down Jacket does it all. All YOU have to do is slide your arms into the convenient sleeve-holes, operate the handy zipper mechanism, and BLAMMO! Warmth. 800 fill goose down coddles you like a warm fire and a mug of spicy cider when the wind is whipping around outside, and the elasticized hem, hood, and cuffs (with thumbholes) lock out the cold as securely as a Nebraska farmer slams the storm cellar door with a tornado approaching.

Love this coat

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I find reviews with people's sizes the most helpful. I was worried about this coat because the sizing chart made it sound like it would have extremely long sleeves. I am 5'2" and 112 pounds. The small fit me perfectly. It have a little room for layering, but the coat doesn't look too big even when worn alone. It's warm and light.

What is a good soft shell for over this jacket when the temperature dips on the slopes?

I use the Windstopper Tech Jacket from Mountain Hardwear over my Gnar Hoody. The length is a little shy of the Gnar's length, but the Gore windstopper, DWR, and pitzips make it a great soft shell.

Anyone else find the claimed 9oz weight hard to believe?

It is a super light jacket, I'm wearing the mens version right now, but it weighs in closer to 12 oz. 9 oz is the listed weight on the Sierra Designs site, but I'm thinking it's closer to 11 or so, depending on size.

Just got the men's XL and the tag says 11.5oz. It is super light, but that's because there isn't much fill. Probably not as warm as the Rab or Patagonia versions.

HI Le Pistoir,
I would say the women's size medium is very close to 9-10 oz. I have the men's medium and haven't weighed it yet, I can say it fits the bill as a warm, stylish and functional layer. Strengths are packability and sleeve length. Nice piece for sure.

Luv the womens Gnar Hoody and men's Flex Hoody.
I have one of each. Flex has more down and keeps you warm on the slopes. Great for snowboarding.

Gnar Go-To Jacket

I have to admit I have 2 colors in this jacket, Sangria and Charcoal. I wear the Charcoal as my everyday jacket and the Sangria when I ski because I like bright colors on the slopes. There are times I layer the Gnar over or under a Sierra Designs Vapor when I need extra warms. The combo of the 2 jackets lets me go anywhere outdoors unless it's raining. Then I need a waterproof jacket. That's a different story.

Smooth as Butta'

Sleek, soft, and super comfy! This is my new everyday jacket. It compresses so small there is no reason not to take it everywhere, and I love the big internal pockets.
