Ol’ Reliable.

At this point, it’s almost like we’ve run out of new things to say about Shimano’s XT shifters, largely because they’re one of those things that we just don’t have to think about that much. They always work, and always work well, and if they’re not working well, it’s usually a problem elsewhere in the drivetrain. This particular model is compatible with both 2- and 3-by-10 drivetrains, and features Shimano’s 2-Way Release, so you can push or pull the shifter lever to drop down the cassette.

Unanswered Question

I broke my left shifter (shimano xtr) and looking to replace it. My question is whether this shifter will fit my handlebar? I have a Carbon WCS Riser Bar 22.4mm wide. Thanks for your help. My email is

Great Shifters

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Shimano line of xt is the excellence of mid level builds, great equipment for the price!

Solid Shifters

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This shifter is nice because you can do multiple shifts down the cassette as well as shift with just your thumb or use your pointer finger. They are very durable as are all Shimano products. They made a really great product here!

great alternative to xtr

there are a number of nice touches. mode converter for 2/3 ring setup, removable gear indicator, crisp indexing and 2 way release.

    Quick and Precise

Shifts quickly and precise when paired with the FD-M781, and RD-M780 derailleurs. It's not a requirement, but it?s a good idea to have the complete XT groupset (add the FC-780 crankset and M771 cassette).

      gear display

XT shifters are all I've felt were necessary on any of my rides. These are no different. That being said, these dont come with a replacement cover when you remove the hokey gear display/indicator. I think that's lame. The previous shifters would provide the replacement cover on the underside of the gear display when you unscrewed it. Not only did it look much better, it saved about 20 grams too.

Now it seems Shimano wants you to buy the chunky looking replacement cover, instead of just sending it with the shifters. PITA really. Specially after dropping about $1600 and waiting a week, and then having to order this stupid part too. So far haven't even found any...
