More shoe for your dollar.

The deeper that we get into Shimano's new line of cycling shoes, the more that we start to wonder, 'where's the entry-level?' Simply by going in order, the new SH-R088 Shoes fall second in the catalog. However, it retains key features from Shimano shoes well above it.

Shimano had one key objective for its SH-R088 shoes: meeting comfort with quality. And not surprisingly, Shimano did not disappoint. The R088s feature a fiberglass-reinforced polyamide outsole construction that strikes the ideal balance between rigidity and comfort. Now, we're all led to believe that stiffer is better, and in some cycling applications, this is absolutely true. However, it's crucial to remember that over the course of a century, that overly rigid shoe will degrade your circulation. So, to avoid the eventual numbing, Shimano developed what it calls its Dynalast technology. This outsole system delivers power to the pedal, while still allowing a calculated level of flex. This is possible due to the sole's variable stiffness and density that accommodates the movements of the arch.

Furthering this power transfer are the R088's securing straps. The shoes feature two hook-and-loop straps that allow you to control the shoes' internal volume. Shimano has given these a broad and offset design that makes them simple to grab and adjust while in the saddle, should you need to make any on-the-fly adjustments. Controlling the overall tightness and security is a Shimano micro-adjust, ratcheting buckle. This system allows you make incremental adjustments with an elongated ratchet fixture. And when examining all three straps, it becomes obvious that they all work in unison with the R088's anatomic last design.

For the uppers, Shimano used a stretch-resistant, synthetic leather for the support structure. This material is similar to other high-end synthetics in that it's more durable, lighter weight, and better to look at than traditional leather. To keep your feet cool, Shimano placed ultralight open mesh at the points of ventilation. Even better, in cooperation with the synthetic leather, this keeps the elasticity of the shoes extremely high, while providing the utmost in breathability and moisture management. More importantly, though, the uppers have been arranged around the Dynalast system. This design was the result of years of research and development that was hinged on pro-rider feedback. And the finished product is a last that adds an anatomic curve and the perfect amount of tension at the toe-spring section of the shoe. Accordingly, this design creates a smoother, more efficient upstroke, while promoting a wider range of motion for the legs.

The Shimano SH-R088 Shoes area available in the colors White and Black and in whole sizes ranging from 36.0 to 52.0. Please note that these shoes are only compatible with three-hole cycling cleat systems. However, with the Shimano adapter, SM-SH40, these shoes are compatible with two-hole, SPD cleats.

Big Foot Friendly

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Having a size 15 foot makes buying athletic shoes a serious hassle, however, Shimano was nice enough to produce a shoe for somebody like me. I purchased a pair of Euro size 51 and the shoe fits comfortably. I have a slender foot and the only issue I have noticed is the ratcheting adjustment at the top of the shoe locks (I mean solid) if you adjust the shoe close to the last few teeth. Otherwise, after several multiple hour rides, I am very pleased with this shoe as an entry level rider.
The shoe is well vented and suitable for warm weather riding. For my most recent ride (temperature around 50 degrees F) the ventilation bordered on too cold.
Great shoe for the price. I would give it 5 stars if I didn't require my brother's assistance to remove them on my last ride. Minor design flaw.

Great buy

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is not just a terrific bang-for-the-buck cycling shoe - it's also a very comfortable and user-friendly riding essential that makes you want to hop on your bike.

I love the ventilated sole - I tend to get very hot feet, and the perforations keep me cool and relaxed. Fit seems true-to-size: I wear a US men's 14.5 and the Euro 51 is perfect.

Stiffness is as the product description reads - more than adequate if you're not a serious racer, maybe too forgiving for advanced cyclists.

Overall, I love it. (Riding 125+ per week).

Great quality for the price

I wanted to get some cheaper road bike shoes to ease into the sport without breaking the bank, and I've been really satisfied with these shoes. I am a 10.5 in most shoes and I got size 45 - could have probably sized down but I like having a little room. I tried on a couple other Shimano shoes and these were just as comfortable as the others for much less

Hi, did this shoes came with the Shimano adapter, SM-SH40 for spd cleats or we have to buy it extra?
