Cleats, flats, and hiking shoes all rolled into one.

Flats have their place on DH trails and clipless pedals are great when you're all about the climbs, but what about when you're hammering up hills, ripping down, getting after rolling terrain, and hopping out of the saddle to negotiate some really rough stuff? That's when a do-it-all combo shoe like the Shimano SH-MT34 Men's Mountain Bike Shoe really cleans up. The mesh and synthetic leather upper and burly rubber tread make the MT34 look like a hiking shoe, but the recessed two-hole mountain bike cleat gives you some extra pedal power when the going gets tough.

The shoe is built on a fiberglass-reinforced rubber sole, which gives you powerful stiffness without making walking impossible, and includes an EVA midsole that serves up loads of support for all-day comfort. Shimano finished the MT34 off with lace keepers to make sure your strings stay out of the drivetrain, because a snagged lace will have you in a heap before you can say "I shoulda gone with hook-and-loop."

    Excellent MTB shoe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Replaced a very old pair of Nike's, which were great shoes. I ride a Diamondback 29er on desert mountain trails near Palm Springs almost every day. Many of the trails have sand washes or very steep push-ups along the way. These shoes handle the off-bike part well; sturdy, good tread, stay tight to keep sand out. I use strapless toe clips to accommodate the occasional need to quickly bail off the bike or use a foot for a push off. The shoes fit well and the reinforced toe transmits pedaling energy while protecting the toes. Bonus is they also the match the blue color on my helmet, gloves, camelback and sports MP3 while looking stylish and not MAMIL dorky, which makes the wife happy.

    Super comfy and stylist.

Replaced a very old and smelly pair of mountain bike shoes with these, at the request of my wife. My criteria was to be comfy and non dorky looking (did not want tons of velco). I can wear these shoes to/from the trail and look stylish. They are comfortable and seem to breathe well. For sizing, I bought a 47. I usually wear a US 12 in Merrell trail shoes.

    The most comfortable shoes

I've tried many brands and models of MTB shoes over the years, including Shimano, Mavic, Specialized, etc., but these are by far my favourite pair of shoes I've owned so far. They were comfortable out of the box - like a pair of good running shoes. They are just stiff enough to be efficient pedal and comfortable to walk in as well. No hot spots, just bliss - even on long rides. They are well made and look like they will be durable.

Bonus is that you don't look like a MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra), with click-clacking ballet shoes, when you have a beer after the ride.
