Description
Be one with your shoes.
Start your ride off on the right foot when you wear the Shimano SH-M230L Bike Shoes. Shimano’s heat-moldable, custom-fit technology makes your foot one with the shoe. The M230L’s soles and panels conform to the shape of your foot adjustable offset straps and buckles stabilize your foot and relieve pressure points through gnarly sections of trail. Composite toe spikes keep you steady when you need to hike it. A custom-fit traditional last works with the stiffer heel for extra support and maximum energy transfer from foot to pedal.

After going out for my second ride with these shoes everything seemed great until the primary buckle used to ratchet the back strap simply snapped off. Upon further inspection you can see the buckle is made of cheap light-weight plastic. I now have a useless right shoe and have the fun endeavor of trying to get Shimano to assist me as I was beyond the 30 day return guarantee.

Upon my second use of these shoes the buckle simply broke off when ratcheting the back strap. Upon further inspection you can see it is made of cheap light-weight plastic. Unfortunately I am beyond the 30 day return guarantee and was told to contact Shimano by hucknroll customer support. Don't buy these. I have had a pair of sidi shoes for over 6 years and never had a single problem.

This is a great Shoe. I have a slightly narrower foot and it fits great. It is stiff, fairly light and comfortable. If you want to get the shoe custom fit be sure to get it tight fitting. It will expand after the fitting and a ride or two. If you get a too big shoe the custom fitting will not be as effective and the shoe can wrinkle.
The only possible down side is that not all dealers have the equipment to fit the shoe and the ones who do will most likely charge for fitting.
But that being said the shoe itself is awesome! The fitted shoe really does have great energy transfer and performance with no sacrifice in comfort.

I find these shoes to be everything I would expect from the Shimano name.
The heat moldable footbed is to me the key selling point. I love that I can get the advantages of orthodics without the price. The comfort and stability gained from such a form fitting shoe gives a huge advantage.
Like all Shimano shoes, these have put up with a lot of abuse and are still rock solid and in good shape. I really like having the buckle adjustment as it keeps everything locked down even in the wet and mud, and is really easy to adjust on the fly.

Can someone please explain how the custom fitting works? The Shimano website seems to suggest that this molding process has to be done at a dealer with the proper equipment. Thanks

First The Shoe Fits great with out Heat Molding
But You are Correct
There is Special equipment required and a Tech that knows what they are doing. Check with your local Dealer to see if they have the equipment and how much they charge to Fit. The following link should help.

This is a very comfortable shoe. Its a real wide size platform. It also did not appear to create pressure points (a big deal for me since I am used to the BOA closure system found on my Lake shoes). Its well designed and the materials are top notch. However, I have hot feet and the synthetic material and limited venting meant it was too hot for me. I will probably go with its older brother - the Shimano SH-M310 which is cut lower and has a bit more venting and seems to be designed for more cross country/race use than the M230.

Excellent All-Around Shoe

I own a pair of the M225's, which I think is just an older version of this shoe. Excellent fit - I have a very wide forefoot and narrow heel/achilles tendon. Once I put SuperFeet insoles in them, my heel is cupped very securely in the heel pocket without any slippage.
The combination of ratchet/velcro allows for excellent and secure fine-tuning of fit, and the tread (with removable toe spikes) provides excellent traction.
This is my only pair of bike shoes - they perform equally well on the trail, during the bike commute, on long road rides, or during triathlon races (well, they could be a little easier to get on in transition during a tri, but they weren't designed for that purpose). The stiff carbon sole gives me great power transmission for all activities, without killing my feet.
