Been riding road bike for about 8 months and just decided to upgrade shoes and pedals. Just bought the Northwave Vertigo shoes and was wondering if they would be compatible with these pedals?

Responded on

Hey mre5533684,

That Northwave Vertigo shoe that you have is a three hole compatible shoe while the cleat with the Shimano PD-A520 SPD Pedal is a 2 hole cleat, so you would need a pedal/cleat system that would be compatible with a 3 hole shoe.

Thankfully, we have one of those, the Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Bike Pedal. To get to the item page, please copy and past either the full item name in the previous sentence or do the same for this item number: SHI0091. Also, the cleats will come with the pedals. I hope this answer helps you out and happy riding.

Hi, Does part of the outer shoe weight contact the outer pedal cage?

I've ridden SPD mt. pedals for years, but am looking for a larger platform for my foot, to minimize small load concentration on the balls of my feet. I like having recessed cleats on my shoes so I can walk normal!

was thinking about these or the A600 but dont really see too many differences other than price color and weight. are there any other significant differences that would make the A600 worth the price difference?

Just Keep Peddling

Great pedals if you are looking for an entry road bike pedal. Each pedal weighs about 7 oz. They come stock with a black SM-SH51 cleat for your shoes as well. With this cleat there is a lot of play to shift your feet in and out without clipping out of the pedal. So, those with knee problems can change the position of your leg while going for long rides. Only a single side entry to clip in and out of the pedal. The only cleat that will work with this pedal is SM-SH56 or SM-H51. With the standard SMSH51 cleat this is only a single release mode cleat. The SMH51 has a multiple release mode for clipping out of this pedal. These pedals also come with the ability to decrease or increase spring tension in the pedal.

Shimano PD-A520 SPD Road Bike Pedal

I just recently started road biking, and could not stomach buying a new pair of shoes for road cleats. I have a nice, tight fitting, stiff mountain shoe that I wanted to use for both. I highly recommend these pedals for those like me, and for commuters who prefer a SPD compatible shoe. The pedals are relatively lightweight and are doing the job splendidly. My only complaint is they do not always want to seem to stay right side up.

I have some knee problems, ACL repair and would like to know if these pedals have some free play in them? left knee needs some extra movement. Thanks

Best Answer Responded on

Short Answer: probably not

Long winded:
This pedal has adjustable release angle to allow for a wider range of movement without becoming disengaged but like most spd pedals this pedal has no "free float" because you are always working against a spring which will guide your foot back to the centered position. A pedal like the Look Keo may be better because your heal is allowed to move up to 9 degrees uninhibited. If spd (2-hole cleat) is not a requirement you may want to try a pedal like the Keo with a 4.5 degree cleat on the right and a 9 degree cleat on the Left.

The situation that causes irritation in the knee is when your natural movement is limited by the pedal entry/exit points. Usually a persons’ natural movement is not that much and proper cleat position will assure you are not outside your range.

Now, some people you have move natural movement in there pedal stroke and others have just plain bad and sloppy form. Concentrating on good form should be the first priority and then support your natural movement second. The main key to good form is making sure your knee is aligned with your hip and is not moving in and out during the pedal stroke.
After my acl tear my physical therapist (avid racer) helped be dial in my pedal stroke and my knee feels much better on long rides, I gained a lot of power too just off dialing in the form.

Are these weighted to keep the entry side on top? Also does the other side have a platform for use without SPD shoes?

Responded on

They are weighted so they lean to the back, so yes the entry side stays on the top but they don't stay level. The other side is where the majority of the spindle is so it won't be a good platform for non SPD shoe riding.

Do these pedal have the pins for the shoes?Does the price include one pedal or two pedals?

Responded on

If by 'pins' you mean the cleat that attaches to the bottom of the shoe, then yes they come with cleats. The price is for a pair (one left, one right).

Share your SPD shoes!

I am a mountain biker and just got my first road machine - and these pedals are perfect to fill the gap until I decide which road shoes/pedals to get. Can't beat the price, works great with my recessed SPD shoes, and came with a fresh set of cleats. Nice!
