After spending hours upon hours trying to figure out the smallest gear ratios that we can run on our cranksets to make it up the nearby Hors Categorie climbs, we are pleased that Shimano has just streamlined this process with its Dura-Ace FC-9000 11-Speed Crankset. This common-sense design means that you are able to run standard or compact gearing-off of the same spider. And it still features the stiff, sleek design that the top tier Dura-Ace is known for.
The Dura-Ace 9000 crankset takes shifting technology a bit further by employing 11-speeds in the design of the new four arm crankset. And while the old five-arm design was the standout aesthetic of the Dura-Ace line, the simplified design of the new spider commands as much attention. The "top secret" BCD allows for chainring configurations from 50/34 to 55/42tooth on the same spider. Now you're able to climb every mountain one week and ride for the land speed record the next-all without the hassle, and expense, of a separate crankset.
Like the 7900, the 9000 crankset was constructed using Shimano's tried and true Hollowtech II and Hollowglide methods. This involves aluminum to be placed throughout the crankset and chainrings in areas where the extra structure is optimized. While this is not a new technology for Shimano, they continue to innovate the process as well as the final designs. This method creates a high stiffness to weight ratio.
The Shimano Dura-Ace FC-9000 11-Speed Crankset is available in sizes 170, 172.5, and 175mm and in 50-34, 52-36, and 53-39 chainring options.

Good question, the problem with the ration you want is that it is beyond 16 teeth difference it is 19 teeth difference. The Shimano road front derailleur's have a max difference of 16T so when we consider the ratio above it will not work because of the separation. Shimano told me that although not ideal it will work with their 10 speed systems. The difference being the chain rings on the 11 speed cranks are slightly narrower. I have been considering ordering the mid-compact crank for my 7800 Dura Ace bike.

Should be OK, not perfect, as the ramps are different - therefor if you are using an Ultegra 6700 chain as well, could cause some crappy shifting under load. If you are going to get this, awesome - but I would go with a new 6800 chain first. Again, should work, but now as well as it could :)

Can you use this with a Dura-Ace 9 Speed? I want a power meter and a new crank (running a FSA K Force) and this would be a nice upgrade until I am ready to go full 11 speed.
I wouldn't use this with a 9-speed, too many compatibility issues with the chain and derailleur. Would be legit to just wait - then pick up a screaming deal from Competitive when there is a super sale. Your 9-speed group as a whole will shift and perform better than a mis-matched group. :)

So I never thought I could swap out a part on my bike and feel immediately shocked. This crank did it though. I had just come from a 7800 Dura-Ace SRM crank, when I went to a Stages Power meter version of this Dura-Ace 9000. The quickness and stiffness of the arms was immediately shocking in my first turn and acceleration out of the neighborhood on my first ride. Months later, I still remember the sensation of me looking down in wonderment at my bottom bracket and crank, wondering what on earth could cause what felt like, a 300% boost in crank stiffness. 1600 miles on it since march 2013.
