Description

Get out and train with your new lightweight chain.

With older Dura-Ace chains, we thought that Shimano had reached the limit of refinement for the lowly bicycle chain. After all, what more is there to accomplish than to ensure that it shifts crisply and runs quietly? To our surprise, this Shimano Dura-Ace CN-7901 Chain is better. This improvement comes in a number of ways.

First of all, the 7901 Chain is over 11g lighter than its predecessor. This is thanks to perforated inner and outer plates. Both chains share the same hollow pins, and it uses the same tried-and-true connector pin that Shimano has relied on for so long.

The second improvement is a slight tweak to the shaping of the individual inner and outer plates. Shimano was the first company to build an asymmetrical chain. The point of it all was to decrease the workload to get the chain to climb to the next biggest cog in the back or bigger chainring in the front. Their efforts also produced a chain that does this faster. So lighter and faster shifting, with less potential for chainsuck -- we like that.

With the asymmetrical chain design, it is of utmost importance to install the chain as instructed. This way, the beveling and overall shape of each inner and outer link can perform as designed. These new plate shapes mesh together with the Dura-Ace chainrings and cassette with unprecedented precision -- reducing mechanical drag (which, behind aero drag, is the greatest enemy to your efficiency.) The net effect is smoother and quieter shifting, whether the shift is on a casual endurance ride in December, or in a 1200 watt herky-jerky maelstrom coming out of the final corner of a crit.

The Shimano Dura-Ace CN-7901 Chain is compatible with the Shimano Dura-Ace FC-7900 and FC-7950 cranksets and Shimano Dura-Ace FD-7900 front derailleur. According to Shimano it is not compatible with the Dura-Ace 7800 series crankset and front derailleur.

Prefer running this Dura Ace chain with my SRAM Red set up. No noise, shifts well, and does what it's supposed to do. No complaints here!

Nope. The chain will be entirely too narrow for the cogs. Look at a Wipperman Intrax 708 or KMC Z-50 chain. They both work with a 5 speed freewheel.

Will this chain, the 7901, work on double Ultegra 6700 cranks and Ultegra 6700 short cage rear derailleurs?

yes, it will work on all 10 speed drivetrains, just make sure you put in on the right way-it has asymmetric links so one specific side must face toward the frame.

What is the difference between the 7900, and 7901?

The 7900 came with a reusable link. That was discontinued and Shimano went back to the master pin design for the 7901.

Awesome chain, lightweight, nice and durable. It is very compatible with all the Shimano 10-Speed range, and also SRAM too. When I used SRAM components in the past, I ran Dura-Ace or Ultegra drive train. Dura-Ace is slightly more expensive, but a bit lighter.
This is a great, strong chain, and you will never have to worry about snapping one of these in a sprint.

This chain is very smooth and clean feeling rinding it and shifting it. They also wear well so they don't feel bad after a lot of use.

The Dura-Ace CN-7901 box says that it is to be used for a double chain ring only. I have a tripple> Why won't it work.

Technically it will work though for the best shifting performance Shimano recommends using the 7901 chain with double cranksets only and 10 speed cassettes. Ten speed chains are narrower than 9 speed but do work on those drivetrains. You run in to more problems using wider chains on 10 speed systems.

Just be sure to install the chain with logos facing out as it is directional.

How well do these Shimano asymetrical chains work with SRAM chainrings? I'm sure Shimano recommends using them only with their own rings, but has anyone tried them on SRAM? I'm using Sram Rival components, but want to try Ultegra (6600) cassette. Thanks.

Never mind. Went with older Shimano 7801 chain.

Ultegra and Dura-Ace chains and cassettes work perfectly fine on SRAM Rival. In fact, some would argue that it will run even better.
I know you asked a while ago, but maybe now you are ready for a new chain and cassette! Happy riding mate!
