A few years ago, a healthy dose of skepticism was allowable as it pertained to electronic drivetrains. Opinions ranged from, “what’s wrong with cables?” to, “what if the battery dies?” Suffice it to say that years of reliable service in both the biggest, hardest races and on thousands of late night, early morning, and weekend group rides has pretty much silenced the doubters. And so, we’ve made it easy to upgrade to one of the best electronic drivetrains on the planet, Shimano’s Dura-Ace 9070 Di2. You’ll notice there’s no battery included in this group. Seems silly to leave out the most important part, right? Except that there are a couple different kinds of batteries, and you’ll want to match that to your frame, while everything else you see here will pretty much work on any frame (with requisite BB adapters) right out of the box.
As with any consumer electronic, version 2 is the one to buy, because all the kinks have been worked out, and real life user feedback has been incorporated. Shimano applied much of what it learned in the past few years to the groupset, and features like auto-trim, programmable shifting and button function, and derailleur self-preservation have been added or refined in this iteration.
