The Seirus Combo Clava functions as a hood, face mask, and neck warmer all in one. Wear this technical balaclava the next time wind and driving snow threaten to make your day of skiing miserable. Seirus uses four-way stretch Polartec fleece in the main body of the combo clava and hard faced Neofleece in the facemask for extra wind resistance.

Bottom Line: Weather the storm while wearing the Seirus Combo Clava.

Doesn't cut it

This thing doesn't cut it when it gets really cold (< 10 F). The perforations and cuts that allow for breathing also let the frigid cold in. Plus, it's really inflexible when you need to pull it down when inside a gondola or a lodge. Definitely don't recommend.

Ok. There are two sizes to choose from. I'm 5' 11", 170 lbs. I take it I might need a large but I need to verify this.

Hey there, not sure how your height/weight is going to be used to determine what size of headwear you need? Since this is a Unisex item, the different sizing is there to accommodate both sexes... You know the size of your head best; I would order the size that you normally wear in hats...
I am an adult male, and know I would need the L/XL...

Getting the right size...

By:

Better half & I have been trying different combinations of headgear to ski comfortably in freezing temps for decades. Decided to try this Combo Clava as a one quiver solution to wear under our helmets. Trolled the 'net looking for how to best pick the correct size. Best advice was from a site that recommended measuring around the head from the middle back of the head to 'just under the nose' in front. In spite of rather differently shaped heads, we both came in at approximately 22". According to the Seirus size chart provided by BackCountry.com, this would put us right in the middle of the S/M size.
Upon arrival we tried them on and found they did fit, BUT after wearing them for a few minutes, with & w/o our helmets on, a definite unpleasant pressure on our noses was noticed. And then we pulled the head-covering back to wear it as a 'face mask only' and it was obviously too tight. Checked the size chart yet again to find that 22" is within the very lower range for the L/XL. So they are going back for an exchange for said L/XL. Hope they are not too big around the eye area where the goggles are supposed to fully cover all exposed areas. We shall see...soon! Love the free 2-day ship :-)

How about compatability with snow-sport goggles? Looks like its shaped right around the eyes, but would love to hear from someone who's used it!

i haven't been skiing in many years, but I can tell you this. I live in a very windy part of New England and I'd bought this and a pair of Smith ski goggles from a local sports store for when I blow snow. It works like a charm! Aside from the snowblower, it's the best investment I've made.

money can buy you love

I absolutely love this thing. I was surprised to find that when you cover your face with the mouth part you don't get that typical clammy feeling, which is nice if your like me and, even when it's freezing cold, don't like to put your head in the hood part of a sleeping bag. For the price you can't beat this, the only quarrel i have is that if you wear sunglasses with this on they will fog up but this is to be expected.

When you wear it as a facemask instead of as a balaclava, does it hold well? Is it easy to wear it like this or does it slip and move and feel loose or uncomfortable when on?

It depends on the size and the size of your head. Ive had one that was too big and it made it miserable to wear but if you get the right size it should do well either way

Perfect Gear for Running in the Cold

By:
January 14, 2010

Great piece of cold weather running gear. Extremely warm, breathes well and looks great. Can't really run with sun glasses with it in full balaclava mode as they'll steam up but I usually don't anyway. Great as a neck gaiter or neck/face cover when you don't want to look completely like an assassin. Attached picture is from an early morning run in 0 degrees.

Perfect ski mask

By:
February 2, 2009

I bought this mask during a trip to Solitude when the mercury dropped to -14 this year. Amazingly, this mask kept my face toasty and dry, much to the jealousy of my friends who were wearing iced-over bandannas. It fits under my helmet and I forget I'm wearing it. Get two.

Combo Clava by Seirus

By:
January 14, 2008

These items were ordered for the loading guys I work with. They work outside much of the day, and during the winter it's cold. Most of the guys have come up to me and said these are the best they've ever had. Previously the full mask has been a knit one, and not as warm. Excellent item for anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors during winter.
