Extremely packable and simple to use. A friend recommended it for lightweight backpacking who also enjoys gourmet cooking. Found out you can nest it on top of a JetBoil (put some water in Jetboil first) and use it as a double-boiler to make backcountry fondue!

Compact, tough and easy to clean. I wouldn't use them for backpacking because they aren't the lightest, but they are awesome for car camping. Great buy!

Just used these rafting the middlefork of the salmon, and always kept one handy in my jacket pocket for whatever the beverage dujour might be, and one in the cooler for anyone who might swim up to the bar. A must have for any excursion.
Nice Mug

I like this mug. It's compact and nests with the bowl. There is a plastic taste to the semi rigid ring around the lip of the mug. And the silicone is thin, so hot drinks have to be held by the ring around the lip or with a rag. But overall I like this mug.

I love these things. I have 3. They are great for coffee in the morning and also as a bowl for my dinner at night. Extremely easy to clean/wipe down too. When I'm backpacking this gets used every day at breakfast and at dinner. No, it doesnt have a handle, but I must say, holding a piping hot silicone cup of coffee in your bare hands on a 20 degree morning feels damn good!

Sam--The diameter is just under 4.5 inches collapsed, and the mug stands 3.5 inches high when expanded.

Is this offered as a set of four, or do you pay $11.90 per mug? The reason I ask is because the photo shows four colors, but the options backcountry.com gives you indicates that there is only "One Color." I thought maybe that's because these are sold as a set. Otherwise, you don't have a choice in color?
Phil Maher
Member since
Nope, just one at a time. Typically the warehouse guys will just pull whatever color comes up first, but I've sometimes placed an order by phone and requested something specific. They try their best, but it doesn't always happen. As for the "one color"- it could be that one or the other is all they have in stock, or that it's the grab bag. In either case, worth a quick call to clarify.

Thanks for the helpful response. Not too concerned with the color choice, but I do need to order more than one mug.

I love the X-Mug but mine has developed a small hole at one of the folds, so now it leaks. (No idea how it happened.) Any suggestions on how to repair it? Nothing seem to stick to the silicone. Or could it still be under warranty? There's no warranty info on the Sea to Summit website.

You can try and contact Sea To Summit directly, or if you purchased from Back Country, they have a 100% return policy...

Yeah, call STS @ 303-440-8977. Ask them to replace it under warranty, since it's lifetime. The fact that it developed a hole directly on one of the folds is easily a matter of making the argument that it was due to material failure. Or, as Dean said, if you bought it here, BC will replace it unconditionally as well, maybe even faster.

Thanks for the info Phil & Dean. I'll see if the retailer I purchased it from (not BC as I didn't know about you guys then) will take it back under warranty. The failure may have been due a thin spot that was there since day one. I would buy one again though.

Is there a difference between the X Cup and the X Mug? Volume and weight are listed as the same.

Maybe there is a mistake in the specifications but as far as i know is that the Xcup has a capacity of 250ml (1cup) wile the Xmug is 480 ml (almost 2 cups).
Phil Maher
Member since
The x-mug has a 16oz (480ml) capacity and weighs 2.7 oz. The x-cup has an 8.3oz (250ml) capacity and weighs 1.6oz. The cup and the mug are also calibrated and have graduations on the side in both fractions of a cup and ml.
Works just fine.

I used this cup with this,http://www.backcountry.com/gsi-outdoors-collapsible-java-drip#review_200078695 to make coffee. I was worried that the weight of the coffee make filled with water might cause this cup to collapse to its storage form. No problem though it worked just fine. And as a bonus you just about fill the cone of the coffee maker up with hot water and fills this cup just right when it drips down through. (Might have to add a bit more water.)
Real easy to clean too.

Is the Sea To Summit X Mug marked with measurements? If so, at what intervals? Thanks!

Yes, the graduations are marked in both fractions of a cup and in ml.

On my last cold weather hiking trip I wanted to make a cup of tea. So much more easier to use this cup than try to drink out of my cooking pot! Definitely worth taking along!

This thing rocks. When it's folded up, it absolutely stays folded, unlike the x-bowl (but I still love the bowl too). Very lightweight, easy to pack, and it isn't as hot to hold as you might think.

I would say no. This item can handle hot liquids, but in the microwave it would most likely melt.

Yes, it's completely safe for microwave use. Silicone has a safe temp rating of 428F/220C and your usage will never be greater than 212F/100C. The Nylon lip has a temperature rating of anywhere from 390F/199C to 490F/254C depending on the type of nylon, but the ring would be insulated by the silicone, so it's not even an issue.

STS is very specific in stating that this is both microwave and dishwasher safe.

That is where the solid ring at the top comes in, for support and a place to hold when drinking hot beverages.

The X-Mugis a legit backcountry mug. It's highly collapsible and pretty lightweight. These things are food safe, can go down to 40F, up to 356F, can be used with boiling water, and are dishwasher safe. Talk about bombproof. These things rock! Plus, this stacks perfectly with the X-Bowl.
