You want to do as much as you can to keep your skis, boards, bikes, kayaks, and other toys safe on your roof. Sea To Summit's SPT Lockable Tie-Down Strap has an integrated, keyed locking system, and stainless steel-reinforced webbing tie-down straps. The two-time hardened stainless steel cables make the webbing straps super difficult to cut through. The SPT Lockable Strap's Soft Santoprene buckle casting won't scratch your goods, and the buckle resists corrosion. Choose the five-foot Sea To Summit Tie-Down Straps for snowsport gear and bikes, the eight-foot straps for a kayak, and the 13-foot straps for canoes or multiple kayaks. *Sold in pairs.

Bottom Line: Put your play gear on lock-down.

with the sea to summit 5 foot lockable tie downs using them on a hullavator thule rack and wilderness kayak I would have a foot of strap left over. Local people have been telling me I should go ahead and get the 8 foot ones. Do you see why? Seems like it would be too much to tuck away and they will not just close in my truck door like some people do.

Personally, I like to have more than a foot or two of extra strap so that there's no question in my mind whether I got enough leverage to keep whatever I rigged in place exactly as I left it. As far as the extra hanging off, the daisy chain will be your best friend. Check out this pdf for good instructions.www.bottrell.ca/Docs/Boaters%20Tip-Chain%20Sinnet%20Knot.pdf

In theory, yes. The big question is how will it be attached physically to the car? I understand small straps that go beneath bumpers and hooks around trunk hatches, but those can be easily circumvented/removed.Basically you'll have to run the locking rope through your entire trunk compartment, or come up with some other highly creative routing for it to be effective.
