Why would you use a tent?

Throwing down serious weather protection while being virtually weightless isn't easy, but the Sea to Summit Escapist Tarp does a damn good job of it This rugged 15D Ultra-Sil Nano nylon tarp pitches in any one of roughly seven million ways (A-frame and lean-to setups being the most common), and has a PU coating and fully-taped seams to keep the rain at bay. With eight durable Hypalon guy-out points, you can tie the Escapist to trees, stake it out, or pitch it using trekking poles, so you're always protected, no matter the terrain or conditions.

    Great... But

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This sea to summit tarp is absolutely fantastic. Better than all the others I have looked at. BUT!!! C'mon Sea.... Provide a freikin compression or stuff sack that a camper can actually use. This bag it comes with is not in the least bit usable. The only way the tarp fits in there is if you are at the factory using precision folds down to the n'th millimeter will it ever go back in. Heaven forbid a camper with cold wet hands and an accidental blade of grass or leaf get mixed in there it would NEVER fit back in.....provide a usable xxs or xxxs compression sack with this tarp and you have the best product on the planet....

    Lightweight and packable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This tarp is little and light but dont think of that as a bad thing. Its insanely packable and no bigger than a can of Monster energy. Its a great addition to your camp supplies especially if rain is in the forecast. Its easy to set up a ridgeline above your hammock or tent.

    Super tarp

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Super lightweight. Nice stringy doodah tie downs at every corner and midpoints. Holes at every corner and midpoints for a trekking pole. A gazillion ways to setup.

I live in western Washington. We get a little bit of rain every year so I bought this to take on long soggy backpacking and hunting trips. I use the tarp to cook, hang wet gear and hang out under. I've found moral to be quite a bit better cooking and hanging out under the tarp vs being cooped up in a tent during a down pour.

This tarp is not not cheap. Yes there are cheaper ones out there. Like all backpacking gear you pay for what you get. This one is the best.
