running and hiking

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

i ran on the road with these, and i did an uphill hike in them. they were a tiny bit stiff for road running (not their intended use) but were great for hiking. very lightweight, stiff enough sole to not get poked by rocks, and ample traction make this a good all-around trail shoe, imo. plus it's eco-friendly, which always feels good.

i wear a size 5 shoe but typically go with a 5.5 for added toe room on trails, but i should've stuck with a 5 in the scarpa.

I am an avid walker, and I am always on the lookout for shoes that offer enough support, but don't feel heavy or cumbersome, that don't end up hurting or rubbing or feeling just plain uncomfortable. Well, I think I've found my shoes! So far, the Scarpa Spark is light-weight (feels like minimalist shoes), soft and comfy on my feet, but provide enough support that I don't worry about turning my ankle when I step off a curb. I think these are the answer I've been looking for, but with a little less than 100 miles on them, I guess time will tell. I tried minimalist shoes in the past, loved them, forgot I had them on, but ended up with a stress fracture in my foot. Orthopedist said I should never wear anything but a very supportive shoe (I was born with mild club feet), but I really have a hard time with anything that feels that supportive...if you know what I mean. The true test for me is if, after wearing them for a brisk walk or a trip to the grocery store,I don't take them off the minute I come in the door, well then, they're usually keepers!

If you are lucky enough to have "normal" feet, you will enjoy wearing these shoes...and if you are like me and have "problem" feet, you will be glad you tried them!

    Happy Feet!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these kicks in August and I have been doing my preseason ski training in them almost every day (some days I fall of the wagon..;) They have been extremely comfortable weather running on the trail or tredmill, doing agility drills or for box jumps. You can really feel how much lighter they are than so many other running shoes out there, yet they are so much more comfortable. With many other sneakers my feet tend to slosh around in the tow box area, however with the Spark I don't have any moving around, which means no hotspots and no blisters. You would think having less padding may make for a rough ride through trails or on hard surfaces, but some how the shoe feels so much more comfortable. All and all I highly recommend the Spark for its comfort, light weight, and earth friendlyness :)

I love that this shoe is burly enough to protect from the rocks and help with a little pronation but still has the minimalist features that promote a good stride, nimble footing and feel light on the feet. I also love to support companies that embrace any kind of eco-friendly manufacturing.

      Happy Trails

I'm new to the fine sport of trail running, but these are a game changer for me. My old clunky running shoes are gathering dust in the closet! I read that these were lightweight, but WOW, they feel like baby clouds on my feet!

So far they have been very comfortable, and despite the minimalist design, I haven't had any aches or pains to speak of. I am a woman's size 6 in most street shoes, I went ahead and ordered the size 37. This size is good, but a tiny bit loose. I probably could have gotten away with a 36.5, but it is not enough of an issue to bother with.

Overall very pleased with these, and they have helped me to launch a new passion for trail running!
