The Santa Cruz Tallboy helped move full-suspension 29ers into the limelight. It became a weapon of choice for riders looking to carry maximum momentum over haggard lines. We guess it was just a matter of time before more aggressive riders started asking, 'Does it come with more travel?' And thus, the Santa Cruz Tallboy LT R AM Complete Bike was born.

The Tallboy LT frame is made of aluminum, with Santa Cruz's signature hydroformed top and down tubes. It's heavier than its carbon brother, but its price is much friendlier. Looking at the geometry, the Tallboy LT is longer and taller than the original Tallboy—but to keep that in perspective, the original Tallboy's short chainstays and ultra-compact head tube make it one of the most nimble full-suspension 29ers out there. The Tallboy LT maintains similar dimensions and adds 35mm of rear travel (135mm total) while accommodating a 130-150mm front fork. The head tube angle has been slackened a bit, to a more stable 69.5 degrees. Throw in the inherent rolling advantages of 29 inch wheels and you have a bike that conquers the sketchiest descents with aplomb.

Santa Cruz Tallboy LT R AM Complete Bike DetailThe VPP rear suspension on the Tallboy LT utilizes patented counter-rotating shock links that allow for a changing feel throughout the suspension travel. When sag is set correctly, the Tallboy LT is extremely responsive to small- and medium-sized bumps. For larger hits that push it deeper into its travel, it becomes more stubborn, a necessity to avoid harsh bottom-out. It's also a crisp, efficient pedaler, even in the small chainring. Another big plus of VPP suspension is its durability; Santa Cruz guarantees their pivot bearings for life. The suspension is sprung by a light and custom-tuned Fox Float RP23 with a slick Kashima coating. Its three-position ProPedal lever lets you select an appropriate amount of platform damping for the terrain you're riding. Select more damping for tame singletrack, or leave it wide-open for plushness over hairy sections.

With the Tallboy LT, Santa Cruz didn’t simply tweak the geometry of the original Tallboy and call it a day. This frame has received some insightful upgrades. Recognizing that the Tallboy LT will see heavy-duty, bone-rattling action, ISCG05 tabs were added to the bottom bracket shell to accommodate a chainguide, should you decide to add one. Additionally, the lower suspension link is asymmetrical to ensure chainguide clearance. The grease ports on the lower link are recessed to keep them out of harm's way.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy LT R AM Complete Bike comes with an array of reliable and high-performing components. A RockShox Revelation 29 RL 140mm fork provides the front suspension. This dual-air chamber fork is easy to adjust and known for its coil-like plushness. The wheels consist of WTB Frequency Team i23 TCS rims laced to a WTB Super Duty front hub and a Shimano XT rear hub. Maxxis Ardent 2.25 folding tires keep you glued to the trail. Shimano XT front and rear derailleurs handle the drivetrain, and they're directed by SLX shifters. A Shimano triple crankset and 10-speed cassette give you plenty of gears to choose from. The TruVativ Stylo Team handlebars are 680mm wide, a good width for stable handling. Avid Alixir 5 brakes with 160mm rotors help you scrub speed and bring you to a stop in a hurry.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy LT R AM Complete Bike has a 1-1/8 to 1-1/2 inch tapered head tube. The Tallboy LT R AM Complete Bike comes in sizes Medium through X-Large and in two color options: Gulf blue/orange and Gun black/black.

Santa Cruz -- so awesome

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It took a couple of rides to get used the the tall-boy frame and the 29-inch wheels, but's just plain awesome. I wouldn't trade this bike in for anything. I ride mostly in northern Utah up the various canyons and on shoreline, and this thing is just the bomb. I want the 5010...
