The Santa Cruz Highball Carbon X01 frame is constructed with a single section of carbon (rather than multiple, individually-cured carbon tubes), which allows Santa Cruz to create a stronger frame with less material. Santa Cruz does this by wrapping the fibers continuously around structurally important junctures (like the head tube and bottom bracket), which ultimately dampens the force from impacts and pedaling load and results in a smoother, lighter, and more responsive ride.

In place of rear suspension, the Highball features a svelte 27.2mm seatpost that will provide some cushioning during serious saddle time. And with a sharper head tube angle and shorter wheelbase than the Highball 27.5, the 29-inch model handles confidently in tight, technical sections.

For the best balance of weight, function, and price, the drivetrain includes bits from SRAM’s X1, X01, and XX1 lines and is topped with with a Race Face Turbine Cinch crank. The build also includes Shimano brakes and WTB rims laced to DT Swiss hubs.

great simple MTB

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Went from a Santa Cruz Blur (FS 26er) to this bike and won't look back. It's light, tight, and simple and just rolls over everything. The 1x up front is all I need for the kind of riding I do. Really can't find any faults with it except maybe that the handlebar is very wide and catches occasionally on tight squeezes through trees. Easy enough to change if I need to though.

4 Rides in....

I just got this bike last week and have ridden it 4 times already. I "upgraded" from a full suspension 26 and can't believe the difference. I haven't ridden any serious rocky terrain or big drops yet but lots of flowing single track and this bike just sticks to the trail. The 1x11 drive train is the best and the stiffness of the frame and wheels is excellent. The 29 in wheels do take a bit more power to climb steep terrain but the tradeoff in the weight of this bike vs a full susp more than makes up the difference.
