For a bike that's generated so much hype on the trails, the descriptors we'd employ to describe Santa Cruz's latest Bronson Carbon CC X01 Complete Mountain Bike are often surprisingly understated. It's well-mannered. The handling across terrain? Neutral and steady with shades of slacker aggression. Once you start putting power into it, though, the Bronson summons an entirely different grammar. The combination of a refined Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension design and Santa Cruz's top-tier Carbon CC construction makes for a platform that stiffens while pedaling in anger, regardless of whether it's being thrown into features or popping over a climb's crux move. Whatever the application and whatever words you choose to describe it, one thing is certain: the Bronson speaks trail.
The frame is built with Santa Cruz's top-end Carbon CC materials, which allows the engineers to use less carbon in order to hit stiffness targets. It's every bit as responsive as the less expensive Carbon C version, but its claimed weight is almost 300g less. Both triangles are constructed as whole, monocoque pieces, which also contributes to keeping weight low because the carbon can be wrapped through junctures and around joints. This eliminates the artificial weak points of bonded frames and actually requires less material in the process. While it's being cured, the frame is compacted from inside and out. This final step virtually eliminates any excess material and resin pooling, resulting in more structural integrity and, of course, additional weight savings.
The frame centers on a VPP suspension platform that's been optimized for its 27.5in wheels. VPP employs two aluminum counter-rotating links to achieve a balanced, consistent pedaling platform throughout its travel. The upper link provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point — or about 15-20% of the way into the travel. This yields a vertical wheel path that translates to a solid feel during acceleration and small-bump compliance while pushing on across root lattices.
As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the lower-link activates, which moves the axle rearward to absorb big hits and lengthen the wheelbase for increasing stability when dropping in on rock gutters. The a DIY-friendly collet-style pivot hardware holding it all together means that your pivots stay tight and are easily serviceable at home if ever necessary.
Santa Cruz's latest Bronson X01 build kit is equal parts aspiring racer and serious recreationalist. The X01 drivetrain is SRAM's mid-level one-by group, but the key difference between it and the more expensive XX1 components is a story of weight, not function, with the latter losing a few grams through materials and machining. The cockpit is finished in style with the low weight and torsional stiffness of a wide carbon bar and the clean versatility of a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper. RockShox also features in the suspension, with a Pike RCT3 up front and the stately Monarch RT3 in the back — a shock/fork combo that leaves no doubt as to the bike's competition pedigree.
