The Salomon Men's XT Wings Shoe boasts the rugged strength and durability for any trail run, but the comfort alone will have you looking for every chance to wear them. With the help of a foot-hugging asymmetrical Quicklace system, and pronation control in the midsole, the XT Wings WP Shoe provides unparalleled fit and comfort both on the trail and off. Salomon's versatile, Running Contragrip sole tames any trail; from rocky descents to sandstone side trips. The antimicrobial Ortholite footbed puts an end to foot funk, while the Agile Chassis Skeleton supports your arches and provides a stable platform for rocky and rough terrain, reducing foot fatigue and chances of a rolled ankle.
Bottom Line: A killer trail running shoe more comfortable than your bed slippers? Believe it.
I found these shoe to be very stiff and non-responsive on the trails. The wide heel also contributes to an uneven ride. Very solid construction though.
I wear Asics Gel 1150s now but would like a trail runner for winter in northern Wisconsin. Problem is that I have a wide forefoot. The 1150s accommodate my foot without going to a wide shoe. Will the Salomon XT Wings do the same or should I go to Asics Trail Sensors?

I am a soldier deployed oversea. I purchased My wings after I had gone through two pair of New Balance shoes. I have a wide foot and they had been the only shoe that worked for me. Needless to say the combination of road, gravel paths and moon dust trails did not do them any good. I heard about the wings and Soloman shoes through another runner here. I looked around for a shoe that would hold up to these conditions. I have since put over 500 miles on them, through all of the same wear and tear of the others and have to tell you I have never been happier. Their first test was the army ten miler the first time I worn them. I never got a blister or even discomfort, they breathed real well and since have not had anything go wrong with them. I highly recommend them to anyone looking at wearing a pair of shoes for these conditions.
These are great shoes as are all of the salomons that I have owned. Used them for all sorts of running and hiking and for just about every other need. The only problem I had with them is the lacing system broke on my pair. If it were not for that they'd be close to perfect shoes for me.
I just purchased these the other week and love them. They breathe extremely well and have plenty of support for the the heel of the foot. The lacing system works great, I was a little hesitant not knowing much about that system. After getting the shoes I love it. easy on and off and adjust to the foot extremely well. I normally wear an 11 US in other shoes and got an 11 in these. So they fir true to size.
I have a pair of these shoes and they could not be more comfy, great for just wearing around, but when I want to trail run , or fast hike they are great. I got lost in the Clifty Wilderness in Kentucky, by the time I found my way back to camp I was completely beat up, and scratched, but my feet were fine...Thanks to my pair of XT wings.
Both of the non-GTX versions are not waterproof and offer little/no water resistence. With that though, you do gain a bit of breathability over the gore-tex version.
The main differences between the XT Wings and the XT Wings2 are:
- The XT Wings2 is now built with a symetrical lacing system - New construction composition leading to 15% more cushioning - New toe cap contruction with less material to give greater flex in toe area
If you should get GTX or not, I am not very familiar with the climate in Peru, but if you're expecting to be on your feet in any type of wet weather, I would definitely get the GTX. If you're expecting warmer weather, non-GTX
Like all Salomon runners these fit my foot like a glove. Only one trail run in them so far but they felt great. Very stable. Forefoot seems like right blend of not too stiff and not too soft.
I wear these shoes pretty often. Excellent for trail running, but just as excellent for backpacking or just wearing around town. I love the support, the traction, and the practical simplicity. And it doesn't hurt that they look cool.
Pros: Lightweight, breathable, supportive, comfy, good rubber.
Cons: Can't really think of any.
These are my go to shoes. They are lighter and breathe better than the XA 3d pros, they are cheaper than the S Lab Wings, all without being too heavy or sacrificing too much support. I have flat feet and these offer enough support to keep my shins from screaming 2 miles in. Also fantastic for fast and light hikes. If you own one pair of Salomons, own these.
These are not waterproof or water resistant for that matter. They are terrific trail runners -- I've logged a few hundred miles on two pairs of these now and can't imagine a better trail shoe -- but not waterproof. As a result though they are lighter than my weather-proof/Gore-tex models and much more breathable.
I've previously had Sal's XA Pro 3D Ultra, and LOVED them. Went for a set of S-Lab XT Wings (super red ones) as a bit more of a smooth trail/road cross over shoe. Definitely very light and comfortable fit, but definitely not as durable as the XA Pro - the sole is already wearing thin and down to the softer foam between the lugs. Also, not as much underfoot protection from sharp/odd rocks. But for the weight, they're still a great shoe...hence 4* - they are specifically designed to be light.
These are the most comfortable trail shoes in my experience, and fit great on narrow feet. Great in hot, icy, or wet conditions, they're very light as well. I've retired my first pair after 700+ trail miles, and here's where they wore out: laces fraying against eyelets, sticky tread worn through, and an annoying squeak has developed in one. These would not hold up to much road surface, but rock on almost any other surface
Not a bad shoe- i have been a die hard salomon fan for years and relied on the XA Pro 3D and figured that i would go up a level of quality to the XT Wings. The shoe is not too bad and i have not noticed any real differences between these shoes and the xa pros other than the price. They seem to have more cushioning on the heel and a bigger toe cap but comfort and durability is no different. i love salmon shoes because of the ability to put them on right out of thebox and be super comfortbale, however these are the first pair that i have owned that gave me a blister on the side of my foot. Pretty nice looking butmy next pair will be the tried and true XA Pros as they are awesome and have never failed me.
Ian, there are a lot of differences between the XT Wings and the XA Pro 3D. You're right, more cushioning for the XT Wings, but the toe box is more protective on the XA Pro 3D, since this shoe has been developed to endure the toughest conditions. One of the difference is the chassis. The XA Pro 3D is lower to the ground and privileges a greater stability when the XT Wings privileges a better combination of cushioning and stability. The lacing system, the innovative Quicklace is the same and we fixed the problems encountered on the XT Wings of lace failure by changing the loops.
Does the xt wings have some type of rock plate? I have 2 pair of Salomon trail shoes that are 3 - 4 years old. I don't know the model names. It's pretty rocky where I run. I could feel sharp rocks on the ball of my foot with both pair. Also, both pair seem to lack a little in stability control. It would be pretty easy to roll an ankle. I will probably give the xt wings a try so any feed back regarding improvements to this shoe would be greatly appreciated. I have been trying to replace the last pair of my Hardrocks (the original) for a couple of years with nothing coming close so far. Probably many that ran in the original Hardrock can relate to this. Thanks
Hi Larry, if your shoes are 3/4 y.o., the rock plate - that we by the way call "chassis" - is new to the XT Wings. This chassis is called "Agile Chassis System" and aims to provide protection from pinching rock, stability with a great side to side motion control on uneven terrain and runability with a more flexible chassis compare to those you used. Because of the new profile of this chassis we have been able to add new features such as a thicker EVA layer for a better cushioning and an energized heel area with our patented tendons in the heel zone. This technology provides an energized heel to toe transition, in other words a rebound effect.

Not sure if there is a "rock plate" per se, but there is a plastic skeleton that provides nice stability to the shoe. I haven't had any issues with rocks, but it isn't terribly rocky where I run. The shoe provides great stability while retaining a decent amount of flexibility. Comfortable on and off road - just ran a half marathon and my feet felt great.
The Salomon XT Wings are great shoes. I wanted something that I can use for trails and on the road (I had top-of-the-range Asics for the road before). I took them for its first spin and they behaved well. The heal landing on downhills is very soft and remarkable stable. I did feel some of the larger stones through the frontfoot, but shoes with protective plates to prevent this are much heavier (and squeek). The outer sole seem more durable than a road shoe but still has good grip, but not like sticky rubber. Don't see this as negative as my super grip sticky rubber shoes lasted only 2 months. So if you want a light trail shoe that works on the road too, this shoe will do.. and it looks great.
there are two "wings" that are extensions of the chassis to the fore foot, but limited in width and which are not acting as protective plates but more acting as stabilizers for the forefoot. By comparison, the chassis of the XA Pro 3D is wider and more protective
Had these for about a year now and haven't had any problems with them. They've held up well and are still in good shape and i love not having to tie them.
I've been wearing the x wings for the past 2 years since there arrival on the market and will continue to do so. For me what sets these apart from the competitors is the huge custioning along with agile off road traction. Luv the simplicity of the quick lace system and with the addition of a pair of Sole footbeds have a great arch supportive piece of running machine.
My only issue is with how the seam inside the heel pocket tends to wear first eventhough i'm very aware of getting in and out. It may just be my low-volume-bony-feet. Salomon has eliminated this issue in the new and improved xt wings 2, which seem to be similar with improvements that will keep them at the top of their class
Write your question here...I'm looking for a trail shoe to replace my old Salomon Raid Race. Is this, or any other Salomon, in that catagory? Selections in other brands would be appreciated also.
If you look for a similar feeling to the Raid Race, go for the XA Pro 3D Ultra. The original Raid race was created to bring stability and for a "walk and run" type of use in the mountains. The XT Wings is more on the run side. The XA Pro 3D will be better suitable for that and lighter than your former Raid Race.
As a long time (satisfied) user of the XA Pro 3D I figured I'd give the XT Wings a try for mixed road and trail routes. To this end they are a decent shoe for going from pavement to trail and back and I'm pretty satisfied with them. Unlike the XA Pro which fit my feet perfectly, the XT feel as though they run about a half size larger around the heel area (I have wide toes and narrow heels). In the XA Pro I run in size 11, the XT is a little sloppy at this size. They also seem more susceptible to being torn by trail debris than the XA Pro. This is due to the large amount of foam for pronation and shock control.
Overall a decent shoe for the inevitable times I find myself running on pavement.
awesome shoes. I have owned two pairs of these. The first pair lasted me 3 years and was my shoe that I wore around camp on a 3 month NOLS course in the PNW. Just bought a new pair 6 months ago and I wear it around town, trail hiking, and as my approach shoe when climbing and it handles all those tasks perfectly
I'm in for my first 50K and I feel like I need a bit more beefy trail shoe. I currently run in Adi-zero trails, are the XT Wings a good choice? Seems like all the shoes here get pretty good reviews! Thanks!
Joel, i would look at these Salomons for sure. IT has been my experience that they are a great all around shoe, for trail running or otherwise. I have actually tried some North Face trail running shoes and i didnt like the way the heel fit or the lacing system. Obviously you could feel differently, but i recommend these without a doubt.
it all depends on the terrain you gonna run on and your weight as well. If you are a pretty experienced runner with great trail running technique and if you're light (below 160) you can choose the speedcross 2. If you're running on very technical rocky terrain, and/or you're above 160, the XT Wings is a great choice. Go for it!
Joel, Salomon's are great trail shoes-breath excellent, and are fairly light(13oz.) and the base on these shoes is really thick. I would recommend the Salomon's but also compare Northface Trail shoes too.
I'm a faithful Salomon shoe user but found these shoes to be a little too high sitting for my liking. One of the reasons I like Salomons is because the have a nice low platform. These are a tad higher than norm.
a little bit higher than the Salomon shoes you knew, but still lower than most of the other trail runners. Even if the XT Wings look higher, they provide still a great heel stability thanks to the wide pyramidal heel shape
this is my second pair of wings. I have been using them in the high desert mountains of southern arizona. they have outstanding traction and durability on the sharp rocks and have again proven themselves to be the best running shoe i have ever own.
I have been running in these for about a month now. and they were pretty good right off the bat. but once I broke them in they were awesome. so far none of the lacing issues that a lot of people have. I don;t pull my laces too tight either because I know my feet are going to swell a little as the mileage increases. But so far, worth the money.
i have wide feet and i just could not get enough room in them. i returned them and got the XA Pro 3D Ultra Wide, and these are still a bit narrow in some parts like the heel and mid. I wish they made these to fit my feet!
This is my second pair of Salomon shoes, the first being the XA PRO's which, though I found them to be a "feel the trail" shoe, I managed to wear for over 500 miles of heavy trail. These new XT WINGS seem really stable and seem to protect my underfoot better; there's more beef in the sole than in the PRO's. Though I've only worn them on two trail runs, so far, I have not rolled my ankle, yet, which I do regularly. Also, I was able to wear a half size smaller Wings (size 11.5 instead of 12) and there seems to be plenty of toe room comfort (I generally wear a 10.5 in regular shoes). I do have some discomfort on top of my foot from the new shoes, but I'm hoping that is just from the fact that they're new. I recalled that my first pair went through the same period. I look forward to many more miles.
Since unwrapping these last Christmas, I've put over 500 miles on them across 6 countries and 4 seas during a 7 month deployment. Theyve withstood everything from open ocean swimming to the non-skid decks of a navy destroyer, sand to tropical island mud, and they're still going strong. As far as grip goes, they've performed admirably, sticky to the time worn marble streets of Ephesus as easily as they did to the previously mentioned non-skid (imagine mixing sand, grit, paint, and rhino lining) decks of a naval ship. If I had to come up with a complaint it would be about the material over the toe is a bit stiff and thin. Overall if you're looking for a good shoe for trail running, light climbing, travel, or even everyday wear, I'd say you can't go wrong with these.
The addition of rigidity is an outcome of the chassis, but the real benefit is the addition of Stability requested for uneven terrain. In the case of the XT Wings, this composite piece is wrapped around the EVA and acts like a human skeleton, controlling the deformation of the midsole.
It is just a nylon, sort of mesh, shank which gives them a little more rigidity. Great shoes, horrible lacing system for durability but great shoes none the less.
at 65, i need stability. i walk -run- about 100 miles a month. the walks are more a forced march for me. had fallen often with one broken bone over 2 or so years. six months with the XT wings, trail runners, no falls yet. day before yesterday ordered 2 more pair.
I am very discerning about trail shoes. I write this review after about 200 trail miles on these shoes... I have been looking for an alternative to the Montrail Continental Divides after owning and wearing out 8 pairs of them. I needed a shoe that drains well, is relatively light and has good fore foot protection. These shoes fits the bill. In addition the lacing system on these shoes has always intrigued me and I was not disappointed by how adjustable the Salomons work. I was skeptipcal of the lace over the big toe but this is not an issue. I can adjust my laces with cold hands and wet laces. Try that with conventional laces on both shoes and be back on the trail in under 20 seconds. This lacing system rocks. Speaking of Rocks... the forefoot protection is not as good as the Montrail Continental Divide or the Hard Rock but better than the XT Hawks (got those first then upgraded to the Wings). The toe box is roomy enough to accommodate 2 pairs of socks (Injinji and a thin sock like the Defeet Aireator. These shoes are worth a try and I would highly recommend them.
The Salomon XT Wings are quite literally the best product I've ever purchased. In the short time I've owned them, they've saved my rocky marriage, gotten me a big promotion at work, and also impregnated my wife--feats I've been struggling to accomplish for years.
Not having owned many pairs of trail running shoes, I have no meaningful comparisons to make. However, as an avid owner of shoes in general, I can say that---for my feet---the fit of the XT wings was unprecedented. Given the abuse these things (and my feet along with them) go through slogging up and crashing down trails, I am pleased to report that my feet receive more love from the XT wings than I've ever hoped to receive from my own parents.
i have wide feet and i just could not get enough room in these. i returned them and got the XA Pro 3D Ultra Wide, and these are still a bit narrow in some parts like the heel and mid. I wish they made these to fit my feet!
This is my second pair of XT Wings and I love them. I run about 20 miles per week mostly trail, but have to take pavement to the trail so they work great for both. No problem either if you run all pavement as I can't really tell the difference from my Asics Nimbus. They have a wider toe box and higher arches just like the Nimbus. I use to run mostly in the Nimbus and use my Salomon XA Pro for trail only.... no need to have two shoes anymore! I just purchased the waterproof version of this shoe and it works great as well. Have taken a couple of runs in the snow and no leakage and it seems to breath better than the XCR Gortex.
I bought my first pair of Salomon XT Wings shoes about a year ago and had no idea what to expect. Now, I see them as the best investment in shoeware I've made so far in my life. These shoes are extremely comfortable with hardly no break-in time needed. The Contragrip tread provides substantial grip when needed and the whole shoe is just tough, securely built to last. I tear the crap out of all shoes I buy through parkour/freerunning, trail-running, backpacking, walking, and even as a water shoe. They have lasted for almost a year of my abuse which is about 7 months longer than most shoes I buy so awesome! My only complaint is the insole is soft and has holes in it which get sand and dirt in them. The price hurts a little too but great product!
Does this shoe fit the same as other Salomon shoes? I've read reviews that say to buy a size bigger. Just curious if others wear the same size in this Salomon as they have in others. Thanks!
That's funny what the reviews say. I had the Salomon GCS XCR in 11.5, they fit perfect! Then I wore them out... got the XT wings non-WP in an 11. They are a TINY bit smaller, but fit really well. I like my shoes a little tighter.
Very comfortable shoe, but for $120, I expect to get more than 5 months out of them. I did trail running, road running and wore them to my sons baseball games/practices. Nothing more than I would put a $70 pair of shoes through, but after 4 months they began to show signs of old age, by 5 months they felt like a pair of house slippers.
The Salomon XT Wings are fantastic. A top of the range, light off road shoe with the best lacing system Iâve come across. The foot is firmly gripped and consequently stable, yet super comfortable. Off road running is where itâs at and these are the business. In my opinion superior to the âXA Pro 3D Ultraâsâ- my introduction to the Salomon running range.
I have used Solomon XA Pro 3Ds for lightweight backpacking for a number of years. The 3Ds provided very good cushioning from heal strikes. How do these shoes compare?
The answer is very simple: More cushioning and more responsiveness than the XA Pro 3D due to the combination of a more resilient EVA and the energized elastomer tendon on the heel
I really like the XT wings. I had the Salomon GCS XCR, they are similar to the XA Pro 3Ds, but seem to have a thicker sole kinda like the XT wings. I like em. I run on pavement with them and it feels good. I'm 6'3" 200lb.
I'll give them 4 stars, cause a 5 star shoe is nearly impossible to find I think. I just got these to replace my Salomon GCS XCR. So far I am really pleased. I run on pavement with them, feels fine. I like how the have a thicker heal than the XA Comp... That was my other choice. They fit a little larger than the other Salmon's I have had. I wore 11.5, but have an 11 in the wings, but I like a tighter fit. The reason I didn't go with the WP ones, is cause of the HEAT of the XCR GCS shoes I had before. These are cooler, but still warm. I haven't run anywhere in the dirt besides my yard, and have not taken them on an overnighter or anything, but so far I like them. Good grip, cushy, tight on foot... negatives? They don't breath super well. A little "clunky" compared to the XA Comp. Pavement = XT WINGS | Woods = XA Comp or GCS
I'm on my 4th pair of Wings (I love the feel of this shoe) but I have to admit that the laces in the last couple of pairs sucked. I replaced the laces in the last pair twice and I just replaced the laces in my newest pair yesterday and they are only about a month old! The laces are a pain in the rump to replace and it can't be done easily in the field. In addition, unless you have a really cool retailer who will hook you up, the lace kits cost about $10CAN. I hear the models with plastic lace guides are better. If I have to change these laces again within an unreasonable timeframe I'll be changing models or going back to Montrail.
I have been using Solomon XA Pro 3Ds on and off for 18 months. I was hoping these XT Wings would make up for all the deficiencies in the XA Pro. Boy, was I wrong. These shoes are very flexi and still have a soft bottom. After using them to trail run in Hawaii and in Utah, I have concluded that they just aren't designed for serious trail running. I'm tired of the rock bruises through the thin soft soles and the heal cup rubs a lot.
i am 6 feet 1 inch, and 195 pounds. i run long and like to actively use the whole trail - always interested in running over stuff than around. these shoes have great support, great cushion for a heavy runner, with high impact running style.
they will not last forever, 200 miles is about the max. get new ones to avoid injuries, or chronic knee or foot pain
I love Salomon running shoes. The lacing system alone is worth the money. Though the laces on these seem to be a little less stiff than ones i have owned in the past. But they haven't come loose yet so i'll just keep running.
I think that the lace up system that Salomon uses in their trail runners is the best (better even than the boa which I've managed to break on some TNF trail runners). These XT Wings are very comfortable, light weight, and pretty breathable. A good choice for trail running on fairly smooth / consistent trails. They may be a little soft for trail running over rocky and more varied terrain.
this shoe got me back into running after years of being lazy. great cushioning, lacing system, and enough support for trail running or light hiking; very breathable and completely worth it. you won't be disappointed
i am 6' 1" and 195, and trail run only. my foot is a bit narrow. I am a dynamic runner, and run hard, descend fast. The XT wings are great trail running shoes. they have better support than the XApro, and a stiff chassis that signifantly helps in absorbing rock point loads. the shoe is good fit for my foot, more narrow than normal. they only last me about 250 miles, so if you run a lot in the summer, get a couple pair. also like the quick lacing system, fast, and will not come untied.
Bought these and I regularly run up the Big Cottonwood / Little Cottonwood canyon hiking trails here in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Supportive, the overall sole height is a little high but not into ankle rolling territory. Quick lacing system rocks, haven't had any issues. These are some of the lightest trail running shoes I have ever worn.
I found these shoe to be very stiff and non-responsive on the trails. The wide heel also contributes to an uneven ride. Very solid construction thou more...
