The Salomon Men’s XT Wings GTX Trail Running Shoe won’t quite let you peacefully float over muddy trails and treacherous debris without a care in the world, but the waterproof breathable Gore-Tex membrane, gusseted tongue, and sidewall mudguard will keep moisture and trail detritus from getting into your shoe and ruining your trail run. An asymmetrical Quicklace gives you a secure fit with a single pull, and Salomon’s Active Cushioning System chassis stabilizes your foot on rough, uneven terrain. The XT Wings also features an OrthoLite insole for ergonomic comfort and a Contagrip outsole to help you stay upright in slick conditions.
Bottom Line: Get your wings with this waterproof shoe.
I have finally completed my quest for the best trail runner. I have tried others and I won't embarass them by mentioning the brands. Compared to what I have used by other 'high end' brands Salomon has got this market wrapped up. These shoes destroy every category that makes a Trail Runner. There are super light weight, tough upppers, excellent traction and sole, not too stiff but enough for scrambling and they have a Gore-Tex bootie to keep you footsies dry. I have 2 other Salomons with the Quicklace feature and they are all good but this one seems to be designed slightly differently and more efficient. To wrap up if you have the dough this is THE top of the line in my opinion.
To complement Matt's comment, this Quicklace is new and allows you to tune separately the forefoot from the rest of your foot, which is a good feature in some conditions when you don't need a good forefoot holding for instance. Most of the people don't know about this technology and use the Quicklace as a classic/more convenient/fast tuning lacing system, which is fine as well. But you can do more than that.
I have a few offroad running shoes, & they're always slippery on traction on normal surface such as asphalt or urban tile sidewalk. But I've not tried these shoes. Anyone have the same problem with the XT Wings GTX Trail shoes?
Of all of the Salomon shoes (thus far :)) the XT Wings have the most "road ready" tread.
It is still considered a trail shoe so you will not get the same flex as a traditional road running shoe, but in terms of grip, Salomon's Contagrip soles have exceptional grip in more urban settings.
The fit is quite nice. I especially like the shoelace style - keeps them tight, yet easy to get on and off and adjust. These are great on the trail and a great all-round shoe.

I bought these shoes for my boyfriend and he loves them! I have some of my own and Salomon's are just the way to go! They last for a long time and are a good, sturdy shoe. We abuse ours and they hold up great! I highly recommend them.
By the way Backcountry, you should switch the order of the answers to questions. The 1st answer needs to be on the top, not bottom. It would be more convenient. Notice Nick's answer to my question is on the bottom of all the answers, while the question is at the top. The first response should be directly under the question...
I actually mean the Aluminum/Black/Moss color. It's the default picture of the xt wings gtx when you search for them on Backcountry. See color in the picture to the left.
4th pair of salomans and gotta see theyve done it again.wow these babys r amazing very comfy amazingly waterproof and look great.great lite hikin and very warm im buyin another pair so i wont wear these out
These definitely have great arch support. I have flat feet so I was really pleased with the amount of support these shoes provided. Should be perfect for regularly arched feet as well. Not too high, not too low.
I'm a creature of change in most things. After owning a pair of Salomon XA Pro GTX's and which I loved, I was in need of a new trail run shoe. I poked around on the site and tried on a variety of other brands, but ended up coming back to the Salomon's, and likely will again. Why... -Solid feel on my foot (after playing soccer growing up, I hate loose fitting shoes) -Great grip on the trail -Comfy on long runs (although the XA gave me a little inner lace rub on the outside ball of my foot, these don't at all) -The toebox is a little wider in the wings than others I tried (even the XA Pro GTX) and just fits me well. Others seem to feel it was skinny, so may have been a design change somewhere as the toe box is good for me and this is something I usually have issue with. -Like the lacing system, especially in winter (never had a problem with it) -I run in the rain and the winter a lot, so I'm a fan of the goretex to keep the feets dry -Durable as hell (had my old pair for 2 plus years and the sole is just worn, but the uppers and outer look great even after some serious beatings)
Thus, for me, in this case, if it ain't broken, don't fix it...
Hi everybody I bought a XA Pro GTX and I got its sole very hard for me, Does XT Wings have softer and more shock absorbtion sole ? should I change my XA with XT wings?
The lacing problem is fixed since we changed the eyelets to ease the sliding of the lace and reduce the abrasion. From a cushioning standpoint, the XT Wings is way more on the comfort side than the XA Pro and the Agile Chassis System (the system we developed to provide atbility and underfoot protection) is more flexible than the 3D Chassis we use on the XA Pro 3D. If you run mostly on trails, the XT Wings and its energized heel to toe rolling effect is the right choice
The XA Pro's definitely have more of a firm sole. XT Wings are much more pliable and should give you a little bit more of a plush ride. You might want to be a little careful, or just take notice of the lacing system. I use to wear these and had mass problems with the laces wearing through after only a couple longish runs. Hopefully they have fixed the problem. Absolutely comfortable shoes none-the-less. Hope that helps.
This is the 3rd pair of Salomon trail running shoes I have purchased in the last 4-5 years. These wings are simply the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. I definitely reccommend them to everyone... you will not be disappointed!
This shoe did just what it says it would do--it keeps your feet warm, is totally waterproof, and has good grip. I usually buy the XA Pro 3D Ultras but wanted something with Goretex so I gave these a shot. I wear a 13 but these don't fit like the Ultras. The toe box was firm and felt small and even after several runs in them, it didn't loosen up. After just 3 or so miles I felt like I was getting blisters on the outsides of my big toes. Maybe I should have tried a different size but for now I'll just stick to the Ultras. Love Salomon shoes but these just didn't fit my feet.
Can these shoes be worn with socks? Just wondering if the Goretex bootie is made to be worn with or without socks. I'd like to get these shoes for winter running, but I'll want to wear socks as it will be quite cold out.
I'd say "they must be worn with socks. Never wear trail running shoe in trail running conditions w/o socks, because of the potential abrasion of your skin by dirt. And by the way, the Gore-tex bootie is not directly in contact with your foot, there's textile material between your foot and the membrane.
No, you cannot wear socks with these shoes. Nor with those over there, or back there. Gore-Tex is never to be worn with socks. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever. Thank you for giving me the power to decide this for you.
These shoes are great for running, but are not meant for not running. They are good if you are moving but if you stay in one place for a while, your heal may start to hurt. But they are made for running so I think it is a great shoe. Also, they keep your feet dry. When the shoe gets wet it feels like your foot is wet but it isn't really. All Gore-Tex footwear I've had is like that, but it keeps your foot dry which is what it is made to do.
Hunter, could you precise your comment? What do you mean by "f you stay in one place for a while, your heal may start to hurt"? There's no reason for that bad feeling in the heel area when you aty static, I would argue that this shoe is really comfortable in static position because the width of the sole, combined with the chassis in the heel's area provide a great natural stability and reduces all the micro adjustments your body as to do to stay balanced. But you maybe mean something else
all the shops who are selling the XT wings have access to replacement lace kits. The issue is now corrected and the new models have no more early breakage of the laces. We changed the loops. And if you're happy with the XT wings, don't exchange them with the XA Pro 3D ultra, these are not at all the same shoes, and they are not at all made for the same usage. The XT Wings are lighter and more cushy than the XAPro 3D.
I had the same problem. If your're interested, exchange them for the XA Pro 3D ultra. The fabric lace loops have little plastic reinforcers which help not put so much wear on them.
I just bought the WP (not GTX) model of the Salomon XT Wings when it was on sale, and when it arrived I tried it on and noticed that it was a bit narrow. I am flat-footed. Does anyone know whether being flat-footed will wear down the side of the shoe more quickly, or whether these Wings are simply not meant for flat-footed people? I'm willing to try them out, but if anyone flat-footed people have experience with the Wings, I've love to hear your input.
I'm sure it's been said before but these shoes are skinny, skinny, SKINNY. I knew this going into buying the shoes but I was hoping with an insert or some time of...stretching them out or something? Anyways, they were AWESOME shoes. Waterproof, well-made, durable, and the oxide and black pretty sweet. Hopefully Salomon will start coming out with wider shoes. Oh well...looking at the Vasque Blurs and banking on the fact that Vasques typically have a wider toe-box.
Hard to give these shoes the stars deserved in my mind. I have a pair that are about 3 years old now and I love them. So I didn't bother trying the newer shoe on and just bought them. Well....they are much more narrow in the toes box than before...too narrow for me. That is one of the things I loved about them in the past. I was so excited about the new pair and am now very dissappointed as I have to start my search all over again for the perfect pair of trail runners :(. Why?! Why would they change the toe box?! *snif*
I generally wear a Size 10.5 with a EE width: should I order this size? Can you order 'wide'? They will be used primarily off trail with light (15lb +/-) backpack but not trail running.
Take the XA Pro 3D Ultra. I recommend those for off trail and light backpacking, especially if you don't run. In addition, they are wider in the forefoot
I had XA Pro's before and they lasted 3 years of abuse until they pretty much disintegrated and my only complaint with those was that they did not have enough cushioning for the 1/4 - 1 mile run on the road to the different trails in my area. The wings XT have solved that for me, they are still very stable off the pavement and on the road they don't make my knees scream. The only thing to be careful of is that Salomon I have found run very true to size and the old XA's were 11.5 and fit perfectly, but these seem to be a little bit more narrow through the forefoot so I got a 12 and they still fit but just not as well as the old pair. Saying that I have gotten no blisters or soreness taking them right out the box and going for a 10 mile run/hike. Great shoes, you won't be disappointed with Salomon
I don't agree with Steve regarding the comment on similarities between fit and comfort for XT Wings and XA Pro 3D. The forefoot is wider on the XA Pro and the comfort (if by comfort you mean cushioning) is better on the XT wings. Regarding the Quicklace system, they are now similar in terms of relialability. The early problems of the XT Wings Quicklace breakage are over and solved.
Personally I'd go with the XA Pro 3D's simply because their lacing setup is much better than on the XT Wings. The XA's won't wear through laces near as quickly. They're both really comparable as far as fit and comfort so you should be really good to go. Great shoes by the way!
awesome trail runner, I took them to Switzerland and use them to backpack around and run the muddy trails in the alps and my feet stayed dry and comfy, perfect travel/runner.
Ralph, , to make a long story short, the main difference between Boa and Quicklace is the first is mechanical when the second is manual. You can always take with you a replacement lace, but if the Boa dies you're stuck in the middle of nowhere w/o solution
Interesting, Steve. I have a pair of old XA Pros (the originals) that I wore training and racing for several years. The only problem I had with the laces I trace back to the time I neglected to tuck the loop into the little pocket on the tongue--it turns out that a big kevlar loop is not a good place to stick the toe of your other foot while you're running. That lace eventually broke--but not right away, even then.
You might be faster than me though, heh. It wouldn't take much.
Ralph,The BOA system uses a dial and a steel cable to tighten your shoes. They are similar in the sense that you can not tweak your lacing and you are able to lace your shoes very quickly, which is a huge benefit for trail shoes. This type of lacing isn't able to get the laces as tight as the BOA system. Also, the kevlar laces aren't as strong as the steel cables, used with BOA. Still they are stronger and more durable then conventional laces. In the event you are able to mangle them, Salmon does sell replacement lace kits. I have used this style laces on the Salmon Pro 3D and the XAComp2 and have been very happy with them. Mahalo, SumoHey Ralph,I don't know if it's the material or design of how the laces are run up the shoe but I had horrific problems with them. The most miles I got on 1 pair of shoes was 60-70 miles but usually 1/2 that. At that point the laces were completely destroyed which is okay in that Salomon replaces them no problem. I just got tired of them wearing out and if you're doing longer runs there's always that chance they'll break mid-run and then you're totally hosed. Incredibly comfortable shoes but design flaws in the lacing system....in my opinion. Hope that helps!
Awesome shoe. Use it for everything from hiking to bad weather. Great shoe for water use too. The traction that you get from this shoe is the best you will find in a running shoe. Give it a try.
Adam, I wouldn't recommend this shoe for water use. The principle of a Gore-tex shoe is to protect you from damp and wet conditions, but if the water gets in (as it is the case in water sports), it doesn't get out because of the membrane. In water sports, the water gets in by the top of the shoe and never gets out!
Their said to run narrow but I found these to be a lil wide. The toe piece is kinda over kill as well. The lace loops are weak. After two months of normal wear one of the lace loops and lace broke. I found the XA Pro 3D to have better loops. Other than that, these are good trail shoes. The waterproofing worked great for the occasional wet weather & mud. They have a super grippy tread pattern. I run on a lot on decomposed granite in high elevation desert & dry forest areas, known to be looser traction.
Theres creeks and such, seasonal. High elevation deserts get wet weather in winter, mainly cakey mud though. I'm from northern AZ so we get everything, snow, rain, heat, dry loose ground... I guess my review was a little contradicting huh?... Better tweak it.
I have finally completed my quest for the best trail runner. I have tried others and I won't embarass them by mentioning the brands. Compared to what more...
The fit is quite nice. I especially like the shoelace style - keeps them tight, yet easy to get on and off and adjust. These are great on the trail and more...
