Not so good.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I am a big Salomon fan. Unfortunately I had to return these (by the way, great customer service Backcountry!) as the outsole wore out pretty quickly. The Crossmax 1 was a better version in my opinion, both for overall design, feel and durability.

GIFT 4 Dad: He leaves NOTHING unsaid ;)

The upper part of the shoe has a firm fit with an uncut tongue shield that maintains a consistently tight control of the shoe. The combination of several fabrics and materials used in the construction of the shoe allow the shoe to "breath" and still maintain its structural integrity. The sole is rigid and designed with the appropriate anatomically located patterns to optimize shoe grip and agility. The thin "wire" styled shoe laces are excellent for quick adjustment and hold the adjusted tension on the laces. They appear to better control shoe performance than traditional industry laces. The shoe performs for a multitude of physical activity modes. (ie. Running, walking, hiking, climbing....etc.)

The shoe fits "snug" and reinforces anatomical control of the shoe. The sole is comfortable and provides a continual contact surface for the foot. The instep support of the shoe is moderate and firm. The Ortholite internal pad is comfortable and support for the heel cuff, instep and ball of the foot. The ankle and heel upper support is firm and rigid. The fabric padding is ample and sufficiently comfortable. The toe affords necessary lateral movements as may be required. The weight is light enough for short running requirements, but not long endurance needs.

The shoe presents itself as a futuristic appliance that looks assertive, aggressive, yet a well integrated and purposeful with high performance, highly functional comfort and capability. It invites physical challenge with the dual, multi-gray "flatness" and accented white trim. The thin laces do not distract from the overall performance coloration of the shoe. The red accent smoothly blends the grey and white elements together reinforcing the performance of the shoe.

On the overall performance scale of 1-10 on the shoe, I would rate it 8.5. "

Runs small

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs small

Had to return the first pair for a full size larger. ?????

Inconsistent with fit from 2 other Salomon shoes purchased in the last year. Run a bit narrower as well. I wear them for retail and they are comfortable for ten to twelve hour days on my feet.

Number 1 is numero uno.

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs small

This shoe felt stiffer than the first incarnation. I like the improvements to the lace housing as well as the increase of sensiflex. However, when I first put them on I felt as though I was standing on platforms. Perhaps it's because I currently run in XR Missions, but I did not feel as though I had the stability under my feet, especially on roots and wet rocks. All in all they had a less responsive feel for my liking. These particular shoes felt much more narrow from mid foot through toe box and the fit was a bit uncomfortable for me. Increase the sensiflex coverage on the Crossmax 1 and you've got yourself a winner.
