Nice waterproof shoes

I bought these for winter trail running and as a light hiking shoe. They have not disappointed. They are a little warm compared to a non Goretex shoe, but when its cold out, I don't want wet feet. I wear them around town a lot too. Great for wet or slushy parking lots. I may consider a non Goretex pair for warmer months. I found they initially fit a little narrow, but got better with wear. I can't wear them with heavy socks, but they are running shoes so I guess that should kind of be expected. The lacing system is way cool too.
Grest shoe + great service

Bought a pair for pre and post skiing, but within six months the left shoe made sweaking noises. So, Backcountry's excelant service accepted a return and replacement. The quick lace system is great for easy on and off during winter weather in the mountains.

This was my 5th pair of gore-tex Solomon running shoes, 3D Ultra, size 12. All prior pairs felt like they'd been heat-treated to my feet after a couple weeks of running / hiking / chasing my kids around the back yard. This pair didn't get there: I'm about a month in with them and they feel sloppy and clunky. Still love the brand, but will try a different model and drop a 1/2 size.
Fantastic shoes.

This is the second pair of these shoes I've owned, and I'll buy a third when these are toast. Love them. I work on my feet all day, and my legs are ready to run, etc. after an 11 hour day. Great support, and the foot bed is very comfy. In the rain, these shoes rock. I have and will continue to recommend these. Great shoe.

I also have found the shoes to run a half size large, drives me running crazy in them if they aren't laced tight. Buy a half size down if in doubt.
They are a well built lightwieght shoe. They take a while to break in (have experienced more blisters than any other shoe I've owned), because they are a very stiff protective shoe, work especially well in rocky terrain; GTX waterproof works well (but would buy the mid height shoes for snow).
All said I would purchase another pair, love the quick laces. I even find myself wearing them around town because they are convenient to slip into and are lightweight, protective & waterproof.
Well built but poor fit

First impression is that this is a well built, light weight, durable shoe meant to take a beating. Unfortunately, I never field tested it because of a poor fit. I have a men's narrow, low volume foot. I really liked how the 3D has a very roomy toe box. I normally take a 13 and that's what I tried. Seems true to size. The left shoe fit my foot okay. Right shoe there was too much heel slippage. I tried different techniques of tightening the laces, but no luck. I ended up tightening the right so much that it pinched the top of my foot, so I gave up and am doing a return. The heel still slipped. I was wearing a medium thickness hiking crew style sock. In the summer I wear much lighter SmartWool ankle hiking socks and there's no doubt wearing a summer sock I'd get significant heel slippage. If you don't have awkward feet like mine, these will probably fit you fine. If you have awkward feet, the Pro 3D Ultra 2 GTX is a gamble. First time I've used this type of lacing system and I wasn't overly impressed. The laces do create more or less a custom fit around your foot, but they seemed to not stay snug the more I walked. I find it's quicker and easier to tighten traditional laces by hand than to use these. This appears to be a descent shoe, minus the lacing system and poor fit for me.
Felt like the shoes were defective

Left shoe felt fine but right shoe gave me more pain than I could bare. While some praise Salomon's lace system, I actually found that when tightening the laces, they gave an uneven pressure throughout the sneaker; leaving some areas tight while some loose. The laces also loosen during use.

I'm a 12.5, depending on brand I either buy size 12 or 13's. Should I size up or down in this shoe?

Hey Cort,
Thanks for the question. I've ran in a previous iteration of this shoe and I did find it to be slightly long in length. If you aren't able to try these on to be sure, I'd say to size down.
Great shoe

I wasn't sure I was going to love these shoes when I got them but, I found they are my new favorite hiking/light snow shoes.

I'm on my second pair of these shoes and they are great for running trails especially over mixed terrain. They grip well and the Gore-Tex keeps your feet nice and dry. The quick lace system is great for making quick adjustments.
I've used them for both hiking and running throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe and can't think of a better "off road" shoe out there. "Off Road" being key as in my experience these shoes are not good "road" shoes, a little too stiff with not enough cushion.
One other bit of advice, if you are going to use these in a tropical or sub-tropical climate I'd go with the non Gore-Tex version. Why you ask? In those climates your feet will more than likely get wet and the Gore-Tex just helps hold the water in and they get hot.
Overall one of the best trail shoes I've used and I go through about a pair a year.

These shoes are performing great so far. I bought the GTX version primarily for hiking in the snow and they have kept my feet nice and dry(also wear gators). They are holding up well so far, I did add some superfeet insoles which i do in all my shoes.
Pretty Good

Got these shoes primarily for summer hiking and some trailrunning, but I have now used them in the winter as well. They are nicely made and fit well, they have a very rigid feel and work well for hiking, and even scrabbling. Only complaint is that the lace system can get very uncomfortable on long hikes over 10 miles as it places the pressure on a small line over your foot. Also, the Goretex works well but after they get dirty they let some water in.

Shoe is definitely water proof had no trouble with getting the feet wet unless of course it was down pouring and the water came in through the top. The shoe was definitely sized big, normally a 9.5 but these fit like a 10, so it worked for my brother who is a size 10. The shoe after a lot of use did start to fall apart as well, shoe goo put it back together. The tread was awesome on the bottom of the shoe, lasted a long time through many hikes and some arboreal work. Overall I enjoyed running in it, wished it held up a little better and I got the fit right the first time.

I bought this for a planned hiking trip in New Zealand (Milford Trek) which spans 33 miles over 5 days. I have only tried this on, but I plan to use these with a pair of North Face Dhaulagiri II GTX boots! These felt amazingly comfortable and look neat. I hadn't seen Salomon shoes until I traveled up to Montreal and a neighbor near me had a pair on. I immediately went to a store to check them out and found them to look cool and feel great! This particular pair is waterproof (Gore-Tex) and will work well for those hikes which are not too bad. Waiting on my pair as an x-mas gift!

Not a question about this shoe, but a question about this shoe's owners' ski boots.... I love these shoes, have for years, as they fit my foot fantastically. That said, I'm looking into getting ski boots, and wondering what those who favor this shoe's fit wears. Appreciate the opinion. (I have a high instep too.)
(BTW note: I replace my insoles with superfeet, which make the shoes last much longer, as the soles and the exterior of the shoes have a longer lifespan... may want to consider it)

Can't speak for ski boots but I have Salomon snowboard boots, hiking boots, and various running shoes and they all ft amazing. I just sold a few family members on their ski boots and they are obsessed. They are very consistent from one form of footwear to another from my experience.
Awesome while they last

I've gone through 3 pairs and overall, I love these shoes. Super comfortable, great lacing, don't get too hot in the summer, waterproof, etc. I will say this though- I'm pretty active (hike, run, walk a few miles 5+ days a week), and I have yet to get more than 4 to 8 months out of a pair before they start to break down. Granted I do wear them pretty much all the time, so I expect typical wear, but I haven't been able to get them to reach the 1-year manufacturer's waranty. If you're only wearing them on the weekends or for moderate use, I have no doubt they'll last you 1+ years.
My biggest gripe is the area where your heel meets the back of the shoe rips in a few months. Because of this, I returned my most recent pair, and am going to give the mids a shot. Other issues I've found is that the gore-tex near the bottom of the laces starts to tear, and the soles start to come unglued. All in all, best trail shoe I've ever owned, but I can't seem to get more than 2 or 3 seasons out of mine. I'm a realist though- shoes used day in and day out in water, mud, and dirt, simply won't last year after year.
If you're on the edge, just get them. And if they don't hold up, simply return em.
Great shoes!

I've been a big minimalist runner for 5 or 6 years now. I always ran trails with zero drop minimalist shoes on thin rubber and it started to cause pain in my feet so I switched to these being that they are an actual trail shoe. They're really good but I had a hard time transferring over to the heel to toe drop and thicker soles. I feel really uncoordinated in them and I'm not sure if it's the transfer from minimalism or if the shoe itself just doesn't run well. As far as hiking and wearing them around town, they look great, fit great, and feel great.
