Salomon XA Comp 5 GTX

By:
April 2, 2011

I took the Comp 5 out on a trip that was supposed to be a spring time mountain bike ride in the Laguna Mountains, in San Diego. Much to our surprise there was still snow on the ground, blizzard like winds and everything was constantly wet. The good sports that we are, we locked up the bikes and went on a 6 mile hike through the snow, and flooded bogs. I would not have brought the comp 5 if I knew the conditions would be like this, but I don’t think I could have brought a better shoe. Snow boots would have been too hot, and heavy for these conditions, and since the comp 5 is Gore-Tex I had a supper comfortable shoe that was light, breathable and water proof. In the comp 5 you will stay dry but not overheat, and that’s not to mention the Salomon comfort and the Contra grip which is pretty much like having crampons just in the places that you need them the most, the rest of the time you are walking on a cloud. By far Salomon makes the best all terrain shoes in my opinion and these are the best pair of Salomon’s that I have owned to this day. Hands down you get more than you pay for.

I need a good waterproof shoe for hiking at Glacier where they still have a lot of snow. I think I like this shoe, but am worried about what happens when the lace system breaks. Can it be replaced? Does Salomon have any kind of waranty on it? I'd hate to have a good pair of shoes that cannot be worn due to a broken lace.

Can't say how or if the laces can be replaced. But, the lace system is pretty strong. I don't think you'd have any problems with it.

Disclaimer: The GORTEX will keep your feet dry though they do tend to get a bit warm, so if you dont need it, I would look at a pair that does not have GORTEX.

BC or Solomon, which are the best?

By:
May 5, 2011

These were a replacement for the previous model. My lace broke on the old pair and BC sent me the UPS label and the next thing I knew, these were at my doorstep, free of any charge! I bought the last pair because they advertised, "If Mtn goats wore shoes, these would be them" and they were right. These are even better! They have great support, traction, breath-ability, and are really comfortable. I'd say it's a tie; both Solomon and Backcountry are terrific, and I'm not being paid a dime to write this.

How do the Comp 5s compare the previous model, the XA Comp 4

How do the Comp 5s compare the previous model, the XA Comp 4 GTXs? Are they basically the same shoe, or did they tweak parts of the fit? Loved the 4s and need a replacement! Thanks

Hey GuyNoir,

The only primary change of the Comp5 vs Comp4 is they have changed the sensifit upper on the Comp5. While everything else remains the same.

If you were happy with the Comp4's, you will find the same fit/feel and enjoyement out of the Comp5s

Hope this helps!

Gotta run!

By:
March 12, 2011

Been running these Comp5's here in Brazil this summer. I thought the GORETEX might be a bit warm, but it's not turned out to be an issue. When it's hot outside, it's hot no matter what shoe you wear. From the beachs to the mountains I've been really happy with this, my fifth pair of Solomon trail runners. It's been suggested that I buy a pair of New Balance or Nike, but I really like the all around, 4x4 feel or these shoes. My typical run takes place on sand, sidewalks, blacktop, dirt trail, brick steps, grass, and railraod right-of-ways. In the Comps I am confident about getting into any terrian.

Ryan,

The Salomon fit is pretty exact. I have 5 pairs of various Salomon shoes and they all run true. The quick lace system helps with the upper wrapping around your foot. I think you should be good with a size 10.

Fantastic

These are a great pair of running shoes, plain and simple. Solid stability, but plenty of cushioning. The sole grips well on loose gravel and dirt. The "Quicklace" system is wonderful and allows you to get the perfect amount of tightness throughout the shoe. I haven't had the chance to test out the waterproofing...yet. I'll have to wait for a good, hot summer day to see if the GORE-TEX causes any major sweat issues.
