Rugged Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I took these babies on a tour through Banff National park through just about every type of terrain. The toe guard was also quite handy as it saved my toe more than once on roots and rocks. Reliable traction when going up or down mountains and the padding held up well to about 70km of hiking. The quick lace is nice because it makes dumping rocks out quick and easy.

Very comfortable, right out of the box.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

First off I wear a 10.5-11 normally, I purchased the 10.5s and with the laces loose, which was nice for day to day activities and camping, my toes just barely touched the end and I found myself setting my heels back a lot. With the laces taught they fit great, but ultimately I switched them for 11s which were perfect. So I would recommend a half size up.

I wore these on a few hikes, including one 11 mile loop 5,000ft elevation gain(and loss?) my feet felt great after, my knees did not, but that?s not the shoes fault.

Amazing traction. The pull tie lace system is very strong. I pulled pretty firmly on them just wearing them day to day and they seem to not stretch at all or tear. The loop at the toe, which is not metal, they did start to fray a little after a short period. I hope they will hold up. But other than that, I went through many scree fields and my foot rubbed up against a lot of rocks around my heels, toes and sides. At no point did I feel impact on my foot and the shoe after the hikes, show absolutely no scuffs or scrapes on the rubber. If you?re going to wear these out, it wont be from extreme terrain, it will be from the mileage, which I suspect you will get a lot out of them.

Also I had dunked them a few times, completely, into a creek and they were soaked. Got to camp and took them off. They dried very very fast. Gortex will not do that. For a low cut shoe I would rather have a breathable fast drying shoe and for a high cut boot, something waterproof is the way to go.

This is the shoe that I will use thru hiking on the PCT, for most of it.

wonderful for multiple use

This hiker is perfect for the terrains in the Pacific Northwest, felt great on the first try-on. The lace up system is perfect as is the support and sole..... just a great unit all the way around.

Long distance trail shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've used these hiking the PCT, Te Araroa the length of New Zealand, and the Sierra High Route, and I can't think of any other shoe I would want. They are reasonably lightweight, though not as light as a trail running shoe, and provide all the support I need for long distance light weight backpacking. Provide about 600-700 miles good wear and tread, dry relatively quickly, and feel very comfortable as they wrap around my feet, you hardly have to pull up the lace. Quick on and off. I had zero blisters on Te Araroa, 3000 km, and lots of walking in streams and on beaches. Tread is a bit more agressive than the Salomon XA3D Ultra, my alternate choice. Don't recommend the Gore-Tex GTX, as once they get wet inside, it's a long time until they get dry. Definitely recommend buying a Superfeet Orange insole and tossing the ones that come with the shoe on day one. The OEM insoles collapse in water, the Superfeet last forever, and provide better heel lock. Happy Trails

Almost perfect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I had developed Morton's Neuroma from wearing a pair of N!ke Free 5.0 shoes - they were very comfortable but due to the lack of support I began to get severe foot pain which I found out was Morton's Neuroma. I then bought a $200 pair of N!ke Air M@x shoes which have an air sole from toe to heel and they helped but still didn't have very good support and definitely were not worth $200. I had already owned two pairs of Salomon Speedcross 3 Trail Running shoes and I noticed when I put them on I had absolutely zero pain in my foot when walking and they had great support. I just needed something with the support of my Trail Runners that I could wear every day and that's where the X Ultra Hiking shoes come in. Unfortunately, the bad news is that the X Ultra's are not as comfortable as the Speedcross 3's but they are league's better than the N!ke shoes. After wearing the X Ultra's for about a month now the neuroma is almost completely gone and I have no longer have any foot pain. The downsides of these shoes are that the heel feels a little loose after lacing up the shoe unless you lace it up super tight and then the front of your foot is somewhat uncomfortable from being laced too tight - it's not terrible but something I hope that Salomon addresses in a future version of this shoe. I wear an 11.5 and these shoes were true to size. I was already familiar with the Quicklace system from my Speedcross 3's and I love it, however the Quicklace on these shoes doesn't work as well as it does on the Speedcross 3's because of the where the lace anchors are located. As I had mentioned previously, when lacing these up tight enough to keep your heel from slipping out it will create some pressure on the front-top of your foot, which does not happen at all on the Speedcross 3's. Hopefully this won't put others off of the Quicklace system which is absolutely awesome. Even with the small downsides I would recommend trying these shoes.

Awesome

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I had a pair of XA Pro trail runners a few years ago that I loved, so I decided to give these a shot. I need a good solid pair of hiking boots for peak bagging . I was suprised the instant I put them on at the comfort. They feel exactly like the runners as far as the fit, but with a stiffer sole and more padding under foot. I would say the sizing is true to what I would normally buy in a street shoe, but that's subjective of course.

I could see myself using them on a backpacking trip as well, with less than say 50lbs on my back. I don't have any ankle issues, and like a lighter hiking boot than some full leather high-ankle steel shank boot.

I feel protected well enough with the reinforced mesh, and the lugs on the sole are super deep and grippy (hiked the muddiest trail of my life last week with no problems).

I have yet to see how they hold up, but judging by the fact that I had my last Salomons for a couple years, I"m not worried.

Near perfect for me.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Worried about the quick lace system at first- it's better than sliced bread-great. About as comfortable as a shoe can get under my high arches. My flat footed brother doesn't like this shoe. Purchased a second pair after I ruined the 1st hiking Mt Fuji. Can't get the ash out of the mesh. Ruins socks to this day no matter how much I rinse. Happy to have an excuse to get another pair. This will be my everyday shoe until they stop making it.

Great all around

This is a great all around shoe. From hiking in Yellowstone to doing yard work. I'd recommend changing the insole but that's all.

light, supportive, and breathable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I have used these on a few day hikes, and a week-long trip on the PCT in the Sierra Nevada and really liked them. I was looking for a shoe that would breathe well, because in hot weather my feet get more wet from perspiration than rain, streams, etc. These worked well for that purpose. They are totally non-waterproof, which is fine by me. They were also stiff enough to protect my feet from sharp rocks, while carrying a 35 pound pack. Not super-stiff, but stiffer than a running shoe. The cord-lock lace system is different from other shoes. Although it is more convenient, it only has four eyelets, not the usual six or seven. I found that it did not lock my heel in place as well as other shoes that have conventional lacing. For me, that was not a problem. If you are prone to heel blisters it might be an issue.

Great hiking shoes

Very light, confortable and breathable, the water repellent works ok but if you want it for heavy rain or rivers these are not your shoes, get the gore-tex version.

The shoe with sole.

Very happy with this shoe on all aspects.Works well with narrow feet, too.

Salomon x ultra

  • Gender: Male

Great traction and support for the weight, the quick lace stem actually works and doesn't slip, comfortable temperature range unlike the gortex model if you tend to have hot feet. The asphalt/autobahn color is a bit too Euro for me but would buy another pair. Very good off trail shoe.

Salomon Ultra Hiking Shoe

I recently purchased these shoes and they are excellent!!!! The insoles are comfortable and the outer soles have been performing beyond expectation. I am wearing them in a very rugged terrain - Afghanistan. If, or when these shoes wear out I will definitely purchase another one.
