Why We Like The Quest 4 GTX Backpacking Boot

The extra-light Quest 4 GTX Hiking Boot from Salomon uses GORE-TEX technology and the Advanced Chassis to create a waterproof boot that is tough enough to handle the weather while feeling like a trail-running shoe. The fit is optimized for a woman’s foot, and the foam heel cup absorbs shocks so your feet don’t feel sore after a long day on the trail.

Just bought my second pair

I'm an avid hiker, backpacker and I volunteer with search and rescue and I love these boots. I've never had to break these shoes in. The waterproofing is excellent. I've spent hours crawling around damp forests while raining and my toes are dry. And that's even after the leather was scored by blackberry bushes. I love how the lace hooks are designed, I have very high arches and I can keep the laces over my instep loose while keeping my ankles tighter and more stable. Excellent traction. Generally the insoles are better and have better arch support than other boots, but because mine are so high I buy new insoles. Finally, nice roomy toe bed, never had an issue with my toes bumping when going downhill. Will absolutely buy again when I wear these ones out.

Having Issues with Toe Guard

I love my Quest GoreTex Boots and I am wearing them right now to thru hike the Appalachian Trail. But I am having issues with the toe guards coming unglued on both boots. On the right boot sticks are now getting trapped and ripping open the guard further. I have seen similar compliants about the guards prematurely coming unglued on this boot model. Should I try to get them reglued at a repair shop? I want to inform you of this to help improve future versions of what is otherwise a fantastic boot. Any help/advice appreciated.

Meh

Second pair of Salomon boots that are marketed and said to be water resistant/waterproof. Heck these are goretex! And they are not waterproof. After maybe 2 weeks of wear, they’ve sprung multiple leaks. Especially near the arches of the feet.

So comfortable

These hiking boots are amazing. They are comfortable, supportive and rugged. The treads make scrambled ng over rocks a breeze.

Heavy boots!

I love the rugged style, but had to return them since I was not up for carrying the weight of these on my feet on an upcoming trip to do the Inka Trail in Peru. They were too heavy for me.

Good Boot but Poor Quality Control

The metal fittings that hold the shoe laces in place were falling out of the leather upper on arrival. Tried to put them back in, but they fell out again on first hike. Will have to use a super glue to hold them in place. For the price, we would expect to not have parts falling off the boot straight out of the box.

Hiking boots

I bought this these boots few months ago. I used four time First time I used in Portugal and the sole of the left boot came off at the back. Second I use in Tenerife when hiking up Teide. Rest of sole was broken ( see picture). That happened only one boot. Right boot is perfect. No damage. The boots are very comfortable for me. I am disappointed because my wife use similarly boots 14 years and nothing happened.

I've used these boots for a LOOONG time so know

Generally these boots tend to be reasonably good (except for one thing, I'll come to that in a minute). I do a huge amount of hiking/running across countryside which includes mud/wet terrain and rocky landscape and these boots are VERY comfortable HOWEVER there is one thing that bothers me about these boots, it seems as though the manufacturers are building in a 'fault line' along the suede edge where the boot tends to bend (near the bottom where your toes join your feet) and this seems to be the place where these boots ALWAYS eventually seem to split. On the newest pair I was looking carefully and the leather at this point looked a little thinner to me which would possibly substantiate my theory. Obviously this is just my opinion and this shouldn't be taken as a fact but it does seem odd that these boots always fail in this place. I must have owned ten or so pairs of these boots before over the years because they are so comfortable and trust me they are thrashed however they always fail in the same place, least with me.
