Best pair of boots I've ever had.
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
- Fit:True to size
- Size Bought: 11 1/2
These boots fit perfectly and are true to size. I wear them hiking, mountain biking, fishing and while working in the yard. They are lightweight and extremely comfortable. I wear them almost everyday and they are the best pair of boots I've ever had, and I've tried many brands of boots. The Gore-Tex kept my feet dry on every single occasion they got wet, and in Florida that's a lot. These boots are worth every penny and then some. Will definitely buy them again.
A Dream Come True for the Narrow Footed

I wanted to hate this boot. I really did, because I wrote an infamously awful review of some Salomon ski bindings (which are genuinely terrible, don't buy them)
Their hiking boots? They are doing something right. The Salomon 4D GTX carried me comfortably to the top of 10 14,000ft mountains (14ers) in Colorado last summer (a few more were reached with trail runners) and they are still going strong.
If you are a person with a narrow heel, you know how hard it is to find a hiking boot that doesn't cause the dreaded "heel lift" sensation that causes blistering and misery on the trail.
This boot not only has a narrow heel, the lacing system and tall ankle support locks your feet in. The ankle support system, while taller than most hiking boots on the market, has just enough flex to prevent even the slightest heel lift. Finally, a boot made for us!
Pros:
Perfect for narrow feet.
Manages to hit a seemingly impossible balance between being burly and protective, while also being breathable and lightweight. You can run, hike, and scramble in these things and feel like a superman. Never have my feet covered so many miles and been so damn comfortable.
Cons:
Salomon proprietary "Contragrip" sole. On loose or wet rock, tread extra carefully––this is not a Vibram sole that you can trust 100%. If you are clumsy, or doing a lot of Class 4 approaches at speed, you may want to consider approach shoes.
Conclusion:
Amazing Boot for long day hikes and backpacking for people with narrow feet, who feel persecuted by other boot manufacturers!
Best Hiking Boot Ever

Great boot for all kinds of terrain I've hiked in the snow, sleet and slush with no discomfort. They've kept my feet warm and dry at all times.
ботинки хорошие но их еще не испытывал
shoes are good but they have not yet experienced
Day hikers
Been slowly breaking these beauties, today we hiked in pouring rain at Olympic NF Lake Quinault. Really comfortable out of the box, Pros. Comfort , Dryness, and excellent traction. Being picky. The laces are in need of some break in, tomorrow Olympic NP Hurricane ridge for snowshoeing. Get to try out the new Atlas Shoes.
Best all around Hiking Boot.

Ive had other Salomon trail shoes etc and they are great. These however are amazing. The boots breath well and seem to be as waterproof as possible. Ive yet to be in them crossing a creek or insane downpour but normal rain and wet trail conditions have yet to get my feet wet. Also I had zero need for any break in. The boots were amazing right out of the box. Ive used them trekking and hunting in cold weather and they surprise me every time. Hunting I carry about 30 pounds with a rifle and these have great support. I suspect they will be just as good in warm weather as well.

I bought these boots for elk hunting. I wore these boots about 15-20 times on a 2 mile walk with a 70lb pack, on flat ground sand/dirt roads to break them in. I wore them in Idaho mountains for 5 days. It rained on the 6th day and the boots (both feet) leaked. Ring-your-sock-out wet on the right foot. I was happy with them before, enough so that I replaced them with another pair. It took a half dozen or so 2 mile break-in walks for the boots to start to feel completely comfortable.
Best Boots I've ever owned
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
- Fit:True to size
I'll start off by saying I absolutely love these boots. My feet are pretty boot friendly, in that most boots feel just fine on my feet, but none have ever felt this good. I think I have a medium volume foot, and they fill these boots perfectly. The sole provides ample support for my feet, they hardly felt sore after 12 pretty rough miles in the Cloudpeak Wilderness. The ankle support is great and doesn't bang against my shins at all. Also, the lace lock system is about the best there is.
I usually wear a size 11.5 in shoes and other boots (Keens, Addidas, Cabelas hunting boots) and a size 11.5 in these boots fit perfectly. These are great backpacking boots, I've had anywhere from 20 to 45 lbs on my back with these and they always provided plenty of support.
An all around soild pair of boots.
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I bought these almost two years ago and since these have been my go to boots for hikes all over mainland Alaska and out the Aleutian chain.
Comfort: Right out of the box they are super comfortable and I was able to bring them out on a 14 mile hike with no hot spots afterwards. Bottom line they feel great on your feet, and judging from other reviews I'm not the only person to think so.
Cold Weather: They aren't insulated so I wouldn’t recommend them for extended periods in the cold, but with a thick pair of socks they will do just fine for a day of hiking in the snow. They are also fantastic for snowshoeing because of the Gore-Tex. I wasn’t able to fit them into a pair of Black Diamond crampons but with a pair of micro spikes they will bring you pretty much anywhere you want to go. They don’t have a shank so I would think twice about using them in crampons anyway. They also breathe pretty well too. I haven’t ever felt swampy at the end of a long day in them.
Tread: The tread is great and I haven’t ever had a problem on any terrain type. Extended hiking through mud and snow can pack up in the tread and make them a little slippery but I feel like that’s a problem for most boots. They are fairly flexible which is good in most cases but I found that If I wasn’t careful and pushed up with my toes going up steeper grades my feet would be pretty sore at the end of the hike. They also side hill quite well.
Waterproof: These bad boys have stopped my feet from getting wet more times than I can count. With a pair of gaiters I have been able to cross rivers with no problem. They have lasted multi day hikes in straight Alaskan downpours, my Arc’teryx jacket wet out before my boots did on that trip. They do have a lot of seams though so that’s something to keep your eyes on. My boot finally started wetting out a few months ago so I treated it with Nikwax and they are going strong for the time being.
Overall I love these boots they can take a beating and keep on going. They will keep you comfortable and dry from short day hikes to longer multi day treks.
Winter tires for your feet

This shoe offers a stability I have not experienced in any other. Beyond the accurate fit I've, in the past, have always had problems with my right foot being slightly wider. In this boot I was able to fine tune the smugness without sacrificing stability of the ankle. My only minor complaint is that driving with these boots over longer distance has not been comfortable unless this changes in the future.
Great boot, but...
- Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
- Fit:Runs large
- Size Bought: 10
great boot but on the right boot, there was a bump on the footbed under the outside of my foot, as if a TINY arch support for the outside of my foot. i wore the boots around the office and at first i didn't even notice it, but after a while, i did, and over a bit more time, it got worse and started to hurt. i started reading lots of reviews (multiple sites including amazon) and saw that other people noticed this too.
on the good side...
the best lacing system ive seen, great lace lock on the foot to ankle transition. very flexible. sturdy construction. roomy toe box, snug heel
i said it runs large because ive been wearing Solomon trail shoes for over 6 years and always get an 11 but needed a 10 in this boot
(Was, at $160) Great for the money

Out of the box impression is of quality, decent stiffness, good looks (not that it matters.)
In home/yard trial impression: anatomical fit, thick snug ankle surround, roomy toe box. I drove the car by happenstance, they were not particularly clumsy (not that it matters)
12 miles around the Franconia Ridge with over 30lbs impression:
1. snug/solid ankle area is a confidence builder for moving fast without twisting ankles.
2. Sneaker-like inside form (deep heel, rounded sole to side walls) is NOT conducive to rubbing or friction, & aids precision foot-placement.
3. Good sole friction, not "amazing," but real good.
4. Solid ankle area fit + roomy front end keeps toes happy.
5. Decent toe bumper + anatomical fit = good stub protection.
6. No side "armor" material, the edge of the sole is your only bang protection. On the other hand this makes for easy or no break-in.
7. You stomp (hard, on purpose) on a very pointed rock, it shocks through. Most light hikers are this way. My gold standard for underfoot protection was the discontinued Merrell Sawtooth, with which you could stop a steel rod and not feel it. Alas they are no more (and weren't waterproof anyway) but it's worth a look at their hard plastic footbed tub structure: http://www.campsaver.com/sawtooth-boot-men-s
At the end, I had standard sore feet (30+lb pack) but no rubs or blisters etc. They were so anatomical I had left my heat-molded insoles at home, but I will add them next time to improve the already-good arch support. The "ortholite insoles" are just thin insoles with a very thin rubber edge and little bits of carbon, not worth a special product name.
They functioned well; I needed boots to use immediately. It's a good boot in the light category, was a v good deal at $160. I did not dunk them so that test is for another day.
I agree, just did a 17 mile full pack with absolutely no problems. I have used mine on 4 separate hikes now and love them. I just purchased a second pair as a spare, I know eventually I will need them.
I had one problem so far, an eyelet pulled out. I found it easier to have a local cobbler do the repair than send them back for warranty work, the company was not very responsive.
Five weeks & 4 dry weather days, and the toe rubber is starting to delaminate.
Love it, but it doesn't last

The first time I hiked in these, I thought I had found the boot I'd use for the rest of my life. That was last May and the previous version. Although the little rubber Solomon graphic peeled off after a rather relaxed week long section, continued day hikes, and then a very tough week of hiking around the White Mountains in NH, I wasn't too bothered by it because those boots kicked ass otherwise. Then my foot grew and I had to get a new pair. At first, I couldn't tell a difference other than updated graphics, but after one week section in Wyoming and another in Montana. On the second day of the Montana section however, one of the lace loops completely ripped off. For $230, I expect a little more durability in a boot, especially if it is one that is known to be durable.
Super comfortable and practical!

So these just came in and the size fits perfectly. Never tried on the shoe before but after ordering I felt a lot more comfortable about making sure they fit right. I was contacted by Backcountry's personnel and told to contact them if I had any problems and they could swap out sizes. First off I'll say that was an awesome thing I've never ran into. I'll do business with Backcountry again just off the fact I get a real person listening to my email and responses.
So anyway, boot comes in and the build is very nice. I got these on sale but can tell they are a well priced high quality boot. They are actually one of the most comfortable boots I've ever put on, if not the most. I have other high quality expensive boots, like Danner, and own a pair of their Acadia models. They ran me about $300 and are a great boot. They fit your foot the more you wear them and fit perfectly. But the Salomon Quest 4D 2 feels like I've been wearing them for the last 2 years.
Build is great, and stitching is where it should with not obvious signs of tearing, wear, or manufacturing problems. They have high quality materials and everything feels like it'll hold up. The heel and sole are stiff enough that they'll hold up on long walks or runs, depending on what you're doing with them.
I haven't worn them for very long but I don't have anything bad to say about them. I bought these for this fall/winter and work. I'm going on a hike early November (2015) and will put them through the ringer so hopefully I can give a better after hike review for them once I've been outside and through the woods.
Awesome review! Glad you enjoy them so far.
Excellent boot!

Tried them on at REI before I ordered them here and the fit was fantastic - felt like they were tailored to the shape of my foot. Then ordered them from Backcountry and wore them around the house for several hours a fews times with very thin socks to see if anything inside the boot would rub my foot wrong - notta! I've now hiked about 10 miles in them and they feel great! I like the feel of a "real" boot even for day hikes. Although these are considered backpacking boots, I'd recommend them even for day hikes! I have not tested the GoreTex yet for waterproofness, but the fit, traction, stability, ankle support, and fit are great! These are replacing my 18-year old Vasque Clarion GTX which have been fantastic boots - they're still waterproof, but there's not much tread left on them. :-)
Boulder eaters!

The novice will hike on even ground and clean trails. The warriors go over all terrains, all conditions, rain or shine. This boot is for the warriors.
Moving up from the Ultra 2 Mid's, I needed a more solid sole to eat up the boulders and rugged terrain of the PacNW mountains, while giving firm ankle support, and of course the protection of Gore-Tex. Thankfully, Salomon has what I will call the best hiking boot ever made. Yeah I said it. It's helped me through the boulder and scree of St. Helens to the steep switchbacks of Garibaldi in Canada, and everyone in the Cascades. It's light for a lot of boot, has great ankle support and keeps your feet feeling ready for more elevation.
The lacing system is simple and easy to deal with, while the thick sole tackles any amount of rocks, boulders, mud, water, uneven ground or scree you approach. I still haven't found a flaw with this boot. I probably won't. Get these, and your next big hike will feel a whole lot easier.
Where do I get buy the matching scarf and socks? lol
This review is a promo, not a critique. If you can't find a flaw with a lightweight cloth-sided boot, ... ah well never mind.
Burly and comfy

I'm now using my second pair of this boot. This is a great work/trail boot that isn't too heavy or hot on the foot. This boot gives my ankles the support they need to keep me upright. The size 11.5 fits my 11.5 foot well. The traction is good on most surfaces. Even with daily wear and abuse the boot holds up well. Until I find something more durable or comfortable, I will likely work through a pair of these per year. I also continue to wear the first pair, very high mileage.
great looking boot.

Very light for how rugged they look. Excellent support. I ordered size 12 and it is a perfect length, but the instep is a little to tight for my paws. Returning and hoping a 12.5 shows up while they are still on sale. Thanks Backcountry.

I am now on my third pair of these boots, my first pair lasted me years and I only had to get rid of them because my foot decided to grow a little bit. I bought my second pair less than a year ago, and roughly two months ago the sole started coming off, highly disappointed for a $230 boot. I have a pair of the new generation now, and I'm not looking forward to the same thing happening. A co-worker has the new generation, they are less than 6 months old and his sole is coming apart way worse than mine. I'm hoping my new pair lasts longer than that.
Best boots I've owned, fast shipping!
These things are the best boots I have owned. Highly impressed with them. They are a little big looking but don't feel big when they're on. Super comfortable and water proof just like they say, but they still breathe extremely well thanks to the gore-tex. If you're thinking about it, just get them you won't regret it. Shipping was extremely quick as well!!
Looking at most of the q&as here, i would like to ask if this shoe is an all season boot or more for the colder temperatures/winter. Was thinking of finding something that i could wear for the warmer weather in the tropics as well.
how does this compare against the salomon discovery gtx?i usually wear us 7.5 for salomon trail running shoes, does this size the same as well?
Hey Jon,
I'd size these the same as the Discover GTX.
Ben
I know this isn't a mountaineering boot or one specific for winter but with that being said could you slap a pair of crampons on these? I'll be doing an early winter summit and there will be some snow maybe ice? Just trying to figure out what I'll need!
I have already used mine last winter with micro spikes with no problems.
These are not for crampons. Microspikes, yes indeed.
I've used crampons on the previous version of these boots for hours at a time. Not ideal, but it's doable.
Other sites say these weigh 1lb 3.5 oz. NOT 11-12 oz as posted here.
The weight spec is important, what's up?
Hey Chris,
Salomon's website shows the Quest 4D 2 GTX Backpacking Boots as 640 grams which I am guessing would be the per boot weight. Looks like we might have the wrong weight listed but I will verify with one of our Gear Gurus (who can actually weigh the boots) and get back to you.
Feel free to contact me directly if you have any additional questions about Salomon Boots.

Hey Chris,
I had Travis our Gear Guru measure the size 10.5 single boot and it weighs 25 oz. Thanks for finding the mistake and we will get the weight specs changed on the website.
Will you have these in a size 13 U.S. anytime soon? I've completely worn out the older version after hiking hundreds of miles in the Montana backcountry.
Matt,
We have a bunch of size 13's on order that should be to us by the end of the month. Want me to watch that inventory for you?
Shoot me an email anytime you have questions!

Hey Jared, Thanks for the reply. If you want to let me know when you get them in that will be great. I am definitely leaning toward a new pair of these as I really like the previous version, however, I've been looking at the Arc'teryx Bora² Mid Boot because of the seamless upper for added water resistance. Also the lifetime warranty they offer is very appealing.
How do the two compare? Will the Bora² last longer and be more waterproof?
What updates have been made to Quest 4D 2 GTX boot from the previous model? I freakin' love my old pair of Quest 4Ds, but they have finally been used up.
