2015 Ski Guide2015 Ski Guide

What goes up must come flying down.

Pizza is fine for leftovers; powder is not. Get your backcountry freshies on the light, floaty, and stable Salomon Q-115 Ski, with rockered tip, fat waist, and early-rise tail. The rockered tip makes entry into deep stuff a cinch, and the lower-profile tail adds stability and powerful rebound on tight turns. A semi-cap construction, honeycomb tip, and edgeless extremities keep the weight down for fast ascents, and the full wood core, hook-free taper, and wide edges deliver strength and stability at high speeds. And the pizza will be delish on the summit.

Resort and Backcountry friendly

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For a big wood-core ski, this thing is pretty light. I ski the Q-115 on and off resort and feel it works great everywhere. If you need a bigger ski for touring or like a versatile pow ski on resort, this could serve you well. I like rockered skis, but I definitely prefer to have a tail behind me, so this, for me, is just about perfect.

Versatility meets tradition

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Q115 is a nice blend of modern dimensions and rocker profiles with the sensations of a more traditional everyday ski. Often modern rocker profiles and dimensions are so exaggerated that I find you lose that feeling of holding an edge, punching through crud and ripping a groomer. Where as the toned down tip rocker profile and 5 dimension sidecut profile of the Q115 makes a ski that is quick and easy like a modern ski but still fast and strong like a traditional all mountain ski. What I really like about this ski is the flatter tail which drives the power of the ski, the minimal tip rocker which prevents destabilizing chatter and the quickness of the sidecut design. Overall it's a great ski to throw traditional or touring bindings on and use every soft snow day.

A shorter El Dictator or more different??? Not a fan of no low 190s size.

Quite different from the El Dic. Yes, shorter, but also a different profile. More tip rocker plus some early rise tail.

How can Salomon sell a "backcountry" ski...

How can Salomon sell a "backcountry" ski without giving their dealers weights to quote? A groomer ski sidecut too? Lame. What do these weigh? (178/188)

Best Answer Responded on

Hey Brian,

Agreed. Silly!
Here are the weights for each individual ski respectively

Indiv. Ski Weight (g)

168cm: 1950 g
178cm: 2120 g
188 cm: 2280 g

Responded on

side cut underfoot with a tapered tip = a quick ski that doesn't hook in soft and variable snow.
