Pro Amphibian Shoe - Men's

The Salomon Pro Amphib is a slightly beefier version of Salomon's famed Tech Amphibian shoe. The Pro Amphibs blur the line between sandal and shoe. They protect your feet like shoes but drain water like a sandal via 5 drainage ports. And the 2-way stretch mesh upper and Kevlar laces won't absorb water so you don't carry around extra weight until your shoes dry. The Pro Amphib was built off the Tech Amphibian's last but has a heavier duty back and TPU buckles that increase durability and support. Salomon also added a measure of cushioning to the top for enhanced comfort. An adjustable, collapsible back folds down conveniently for slip-on mode. Try them with neoprene socks for cold water protection.

Bottom Line: Adventure racers, river rats, and anywhere tromping around in or near the water will love the Pro Amphib.

Salomon Amphibian Pro shoes

By:
August 30, 2006

I like these shoes a lot. They are light and dry fast so they worked great for my adventure race. Unfortunately, the pull strap on the convertible heel slips fairly easily. I put a few stitches in it where I felt comfortable and it worked great.

Size and width issues

By:
July 23, 2004

I purchased these shoes about a week ago and have only worn them around the house. Since I haven't really worn the shoe much I can't give that much detail other than if you have a wide foot you may want to look elswhere. I imagine that is why the previous reviewer had some issues. I have some discomfort on the outside of my foot after about 30 minutes of wear. I am hoping that they stretch a bit. I think they run 1/2-1 size small as well. I usually wear a 9-91/2 and ordered a 9. This was too big and then ordered an 8 1/2 which fits. (Is Solomon a British company because this fits the British scale?)
Just wanted to send out the warning on the sizing.

Great for water sports

By:
August 8, 2005

I use these shoes for paddling as well as the dry-land training that comes along with it. It's great to have a shoe that will hold up to the rigors of running and can breathe and dry fast enough to avoid "raisin feet". The back strap does slip a little bit, but for these purposes it holds its own.

Thanks again, Salomon!

This is the perfect summer shoe for my platypus feet: can rampage or shuffle. The clever fold-down heel turns shoe into slide. Heel up and strapped tight, this shoe's ready for whitewater. It purges instantly. The medium flex and rigidity makes it an all-arounder. Pair these up with an additional liner for sustained trail running. The sole is grippy enough for canyoneering and sandstone 5.9/5.10 climbing. I love the single-pull lace system and stash. My EE's never felt the big/little toe irritation some reviews mentioned. Bought a pair for my 70-yr. young Mom....she won't take 'em off!

One year on

By:
July 18, 2005

I've had these shoes for a year now and the heel strap is a complete pain for what is an otherwise comfortable shoe. Many people have been complaining for years and Salomon has failed to do anything about this- the system plainly does not work. I've finally found a way of twisting the strap around itself that seems to hold. But beware...if the shoe is wet, you lift your foot up, tighten the strap and put your foot down, the strap is loose again! It's that ineffective. A shame as the rest of the shoe is fantastic! If I didn't need the foot protection I would get Keen Newports.

Salomon Pro Amphib-Mens

By:
March 29, 2004

I ordered these shoes to hike the Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I ordered them from BackcountryStore.com because they had the best price that I could find. They are very comfortable and very well made. I never had any problems with traction on the slick rocks. My wife is even considering buying a pair for herself. The only drawback I found with them was that they would trap small rocks inside them, making it necessary to take them off and empty the rocks out. This is probably not normally a problem, it was just because there were several places in the climb that the riverbed was made up of 2-4mm sized grains of limestone that was constantly stirred up by the water as well as other climbers.

Salomon Pro Amphibian

By:
May 10, 2004

Well what can I say. The Pro Amphib is a GREAT shoe for hiking near water and circumstances that may require your feet to be cool...like if you have an aselective thyroid problem with your feet (er something)...the pair I received seemed to be defective as after one day on a normal hike, the sole separated from the upper. I sent them back, but it wouldn't keep me from purchasing another pair. In fact, I intend to. Maybe I'm just a sucker.

Rough spots Hard seams inside

By:
May 12, 2004

Love the shoes and their feel other than the rough seams or bumps inside on front top of foot that dig into foot. I hope this corrects itself with time.

Poorly-designed heel straps

By:
August 12, 2004

My Pro Amphibs took a long time to break in, but now I'm very happy with them. They're more comfortable with socks, but I don't see that as a problem. Socks can be dried separately. The biggest problem I had was that the heel straps would not stay tight--they slipped through their buckles. My solution was to add velcro to the straps and to the backs of the heels. This works very well.

Pro Amphib -Men's

By:
July 20, 2004

Thank you Backcountry.com. The Amphib's are my favorite pair of shoes. I wore them on my rafting trip and I could feel the shoes protecting me from the sharp rocks, but I did not feel like I was wearing shoes. I received numerous accolades for the Amphibs. Backcountry.com was more than courteous on the phone and the order arrived as scheduled.

Pro Amphib

By:
September 27, 2004

I found the long shoe laces to be an annoyance. Although I wore these shoes to do some underwater dredging, I found that the shoe drained well but in the water allowed sand and small stones which could be a negative for any distance.

Great for their purpose

By:
August 2, 2004

Got these a couple of weeks ago for fly fishing coastal flats in Texas. Used them last weekend and they were great. I didn't snag the line up on them and they were very comfortable. For what I do, I need socks, which resolve some of the comfort issues, they're made to drain fast and dry out, so they lack water absorbing padding, reducing the comfort level a bit, unless you have socks. The up side is there's a lot more protection than sandals. The back doesn't stay tight, but you can overcome this by looping the strap back through the buckle (which will rub against your foot without socks!).

OK ...but

By:
August 4, 2004

Just got back from 7 days in the boundary waters. The pro amphibs were the only shoes I wore. These shoes were comfortable, drained well, but you need to wear socks on portages longer than 80 rods. One major problem is the heel strap loosens almost immediately and can cause an ankle injury on rough portages.

Amphib AMPED

By:
November 8, 2004

I have had the Amphib now for a couple of weeks and I could have not picked a better shoe for its purpose. I kayak and river run with my dogs, my old shoes would get H2O logged and I would be running with 5lbs on each of my feet. The Amphib lets me go from water to land and not change weight. These shoes are awesome. I only wish I could wear the shoes to work, maybe I should find a new job. Thanks BACKCOUNTRY.

Shoes that hurt

By:
February 2, 2005

There is a particular spot where the structure of the shoe attaches (just at the start of the base my little toe)where the shoe cuts into my foot.

I was hoping that a few workouts would break them in and relieve the pain before my big trip in March, but, a few weeks in and that same spot still cuts into my foot.

If I had not worn them a few times (just indoors while working out) I would be sending them back and getting another brand.

Pro Amphibian Shoe--GREAT WATER SHOE

By:
April 27, 2005

I read the reviews prior to making my final determination and purchasing the Pro Amphib Shoes. These reviews were very helpful in making my decision. The review stating these are fantastic shoes, except for the heel cup adjuster, was the biggest help! I too have run the strap back through the buckle to keep it from loosening while walking/running/hiking/etc. I plan to have the adjuster permanently sewn-down to keep them from loosening--and to keep from having to run the strap back through. Otherwise, these are my favorite water shoes! I can finally throw away my old Chuck Taylors!

Returned for credit

By:
June 23, 2005

I received the shoes and put them on. The first time I used the release on the 'shoe strings', it broke. Then I did what I should have done before ordering, I read reviews. Strangely people gave high reviews and then related problems with the heel straps. So, I returned it and bought a different brand.

Don't buy 'em

By:
August 8, 2005

Some place in the adverts it says these are not technical hiking shoes. It should say, technically, these are not hiking shoes. The HUGE problem is that the keeper that is supposed to work to tie the moveable heel pad in a forward position doesn't work. It's a cheap imitation. So, you can pull the tab tight to lock your foot in for hiking, or just walking, and after 5 steps the strap just slips right through. Try walking and bending down every 5 steps to tighten a strap. Not even good enough for a walk in the park.

So they shed water. So does any shoe made from synthetic materials and mesh. But these use real hard plastic in the lacing area, so if it bears down on a sensitive part of your foot (especially since you won't be wearing socks in water mode) your feet are toast. No amount of break-in breaks in plastic.

I just spent 4 days on the Colorado River and a 9-mile hike out of the Grand Canyon. I'm throwing the shoes away!

Salomon Wins Again

By:
August 2, 2005

This shoe is the most versatile shoe ever - good for hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, or almost any other outdoor sport. My only complaint is that the shoelaces are one-of-a-kind (at least I have been unsuccessful in finding a replacement). If they break, the shoes are worthless.

Great, buy them, just know they need and improved heel strap.

By:
August 22, 2005

My wife and I each bought a pair of Pro Amphibs for a trip to Costa Rica - they were great! The step down heel is the cool part, they work like running shoes or step the back down and they're slippers. This is so cool! They stay on while your working hard, and you can slip in and out while you're changing or just strolling to the pool. With your heel enclosed the strap works loose easily and needs to be improved. Also, water may drain out but sand doesn't. The pro's are a finer mesh but keeps things in better too. Buy and enjoy and hopefully Salomon will improve the next ones by the time yours are toast!

Rapid trunks

By:
September 23, 2005

Good light shorts. I use them for rafting and running. The elastic waist is not very tight and the drawstring is flimsy, it broke on me without much force exerted. So before you wear them, buy three feet of thing strong rope and replace the drawstring (much harder if not impossible after the string breaks).

great shoe for water

By:
October 27, 2005

Great traction on wet or slick surfaces, dries out quickly and good breathability. The fold-down back a plus. Only problem is the back strap will not hold tight dry or wet.

water sneaker

By:
October 21, 2005

Having begun a water aerobics course a few weeks ago, I recently purchased a pair of Salomon water sneakers. I wouldn't ever attempt to do water aerobics without them again. They give me more spring and resistance in the water, plus they look so cool on land—I got the red ones—that I'm thinking about getting another pair just to wear around. Thank you for making them affordable too.

Shoes work well for creek hiking

By:
November 14, 2005

I have no complaints. My only tip is to tighten the cinch strap at the heel (which is a great design feature by the way) that tends to loosen as you walk. Pulling it tight before you enter the water, and minding that it remains tight, will help keep the little pebbles in the water from getting into your shoes.

Great Niche Shoe

By:
January 19, 2006

Let me start by reviewing what this shoe can't do. This shoe is NOT designed for running, carrying heavy loads, or other high impact activities. The massive shock and torque placed on the minimalist cushioning and heel strap respectively will overwhelm this shoe.

That being said, this amphibious shoe succeeds admirably in its purpose. I spend a lot of time exploring tide pools here in CA. This shoe protects my feet from jagged rocks and ocean surge. It provides excellent footing on slippery seaweed. The waterproof sole sheds water quickly while the heel strap provides a glove like fit. It is light enough to pack in as a camp shoe and comfortable enough for day hikes with a hydration pack.

So uncomfortable

By:
March 20, 2006

I think that I have a pretty normal sized and shaped foot, but the Pro Amphibian appears to be built for somebody else. As with the entire shoe, the toe box is made out of a combination of leather and mesh. This is great for drainage and actually looks pretty neat too, but as for comfort, each leather strap cuts into your foot wickedly. This is when dry, so I can't even picture what it would be like without socks and when they are wet. Bottom line: don't forget to save money for Bandaids and moleskin!

Soloman Pro-Amphib Shoes

By:

Shoes are great all around. Did find the same problem with the heel strap loosening but a small piece of VELCRO solves that problem (suggestion from another customer review). Good traction wet and dry, I look forward to shopping here again!!
