Explorer GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Good thing you're wearing the Salomon Men's Explorer GTX Hiking Boot, because the weather man was way off this time. Heavy rain pummels you on your should've-been-sunny backpacking trip, but you don't mind so much. Your feet are dry thanks to a seam-sealed Gore-Tex liner and gusseted tongue. AutoFIT memory foam has formed a custom fit around your heel, and EVA midsoles absorb shock with every footstep. Rubber toe caps protect the uppers from stubs and scrapes, while a 2D advanced Chassis midsole guards your underside from sharp stones. Contagrip outsoles give your feet firml traction even though the rocks you're walking on are wet.

Bottom Line: A little rain never hurt anyone. But it's raining more than a little, and you're feet are staying dry.

Salomon is not known for "wide" fit - in fact, the opposite. Salomons are generally narrow to medium width.

Salomon does fit wider than most footwear brands. However if you have "really wide" feet then I would suggest searching for a boot that specifically comes in a wide fitting option.

Great backpacking and scrambling boot

By:
August 5, 2009

I bought these boots three months ago and have put many backpacking, dayhiking, and peakbagging miles on them in the North Cascades. They are an awesome approach shoe when your backpacking in 10 plus miles, you can feel the energy return from the Abzorb cushioning, and ankle support from the hightop cut. I have scrambled scree, talus, boulders, and class 3-4 rock with these. They don't kick in steps or edge on hard snow, but at the low weight and comfort I can wear these most of the time, carry my Scarpa Charmoz, and save a lot of energy. They are still trekking after getting overnight beatings of 30 miles and 10,500', so I love them.

Great boot from Solomon

By:

Absolutely great boot for a lightweight but very supportive hiking boot. Happen to like hightops for the uneven terrain. The Goretex is warm because it does not breathe that well but that is the only dislike. Footbed is well made and great at cushioning. Details of toe guard are common now in most boots and this is a good one. Bought them mainly for snowshoeing but the hiking has been great.

Are the top lace hooks plastic or metal?

The top two rows of hooks are plastic/composite, but the larger one at the articulation point is metallic and cinches/bites down on the laces brilliantly so that the lower half of the boot can stay snug to eliminate slippage while the top can remain loose so your ankles aren't choked.

I have the Salomon Rivertrek GTX boots the top lace hooks are similar to this model and after closer inspection they’re definitely not plastic, maybe coated metal or alloy?

These boots were purchased 3 months ago. They are comfortable, and had no break in period, BUT. The rubber outsole is already coming separated from the softer foam rubber it is attached to. I only put thirty three trail miles on them- a 3 day camping/hiking trip on the Illinois River Trail. Far from rugged, super rocky terrain. I was planning to hike the Oregon section of the PCT with them (430 miles) next month, but unfortunately I feel these $154.95 boots are unworthy and would probably end up letting me down half way through my trip.

Sounds like the odd lemon pair you got there Bob. I have had my pair for almost 1 year, and even after 4 different countries, various terrains and 3 seasons worth of wear, mine still feel good as new and look the same. The stitching, seams and souls have withstood 40+ kilo packs on top of my 91 kilo frame (almost 290 lbs altogether) and 30 kilometer treks. I have subjected them to saltwater, below freezing, rocky outcroppings and sandy environments and after a little clean-up, they are as good as new. Sorry to hear about your experience with these boots, as it was totally opposite of mine.

I think these would be great for a long hike or backcpack trip but not carry more than 45 pounds. they are really comfy and supportive

I personally wouldn't use these for long hikes w/ a heavier pack. You might consider the La Sportiva Mulaz GTX or equivalent.Hope that helps.

I have 9.5 regular width feet and 99% of 9.5 sized hikers fit me perfectly -including these. I found these fit exactly like all my other Salomons, New Balance, and even like my Saucony and Converse runners -all sized 9.5 regular width.

These are just a bit wider than normal. You might consider .5 up for a little thicker socks.Hope that helps.
