The Salmon Expert Low GTX is a low-cut light hiker that provides protection and support to tackle terrain from the street to the trail. The Gore-Tex lining is breathable and waterproof—enough to keep your feet dry in puddles, but the low cut means you'll need to steer clear of anything more than ankle-deep. The stiff chassis is designed to offer excellent push through protection, torsional rigidity, and forefoot flex while reducing the overall weight of the shoe. What that all amounts to is more energy, more control, and more comfort for your feet, whether you're slogging around town in the rainy Northwest or tackling a quick day hike. Clothed in a combination of full grain nubuck, split suede leather, and breathable air mesh, the Expert Low GTX is both supple and supportive. A protective rubber toe and heel wrap helps keep painful toe-stubs to a minimum. Salomon's one pull lacing system makes taking these shoes off and on as easy as an oversized, unlaced skateboard shoe.
These shoes are probably the most useful shoes I have ever owned. I've always hated shoes and boots because my feet got damp in them. Not in these shoes. These space age materials really work. My feet get lots of ventilation, so they stay dry, but they are also really good at keeping water out, even in the rain, my feet stay very dry. These shoes are very comfortable, and I can jump around and climb things much better than in any boots or shoes I have ever owned. The relatively low height of the shoes makes them really comfy and agile, but of course, they won't keep water out if it goes over the top. So I would recommend some type of waterproof sleeve to slip over the ankle, between the shoe and the pants, if you plan on doing a lot of biking in the rain. It's worth it for the benefits of the low profile. Tall shoes or boots are way too restrictive for me, and really only beneficial, in my opinion, if you plan on standing above the ankles in water or mud. Plus those high shoes make your leg muscles atrophy, like when you are in a cast. My only complaint is that the shoes (autobahn or whatever) are actually lighter in color than they appear on the screen, and in my opinion, are therefore less attractive. Why don't they make the same shoes in darker, more uniform tones? Excellent shoes!!!!!!!!
I ordered this shoe a month before leaving for my trip, expecting to take a while to break it in. This shoe was the most comfortable thing right out of the box! In one day the soles were flexible enough for me to play some pickup sports in. The low cuts make them easy to slip on and off for everyday wear if you're lazy. My feet are a bit wider than most, and I was afraid of not going with a wider make, but the regular Salomon mold fit me perfectly. I have Salomon sneakers and clogs, and this purchase solidifies them as my favorite brand for any footwear.
Comfort, grip & style. These shoes have all of these and more. I wore them for the first time in the Australian Alpine region and was impressed particularly with their grip in the snow. They also make a comfortable, great looking casual shoe when around town. I highly recommend these shoes to absolutely everyone.

These are very nicely designed shoes, they have a comfortable feel to them and have worked well for me in extremely cold and wet conditions...but...having worn them for less then a year, at the pivot point on each shoe, a tear has developed in the mesh upper; they don't seem to be able to handle regular soaking and drying. I expect 100+ dollar shoes to last longer this. I won't buy another pair.
These things are damn amazing. I use them for everything. Everyday use, camping, hiking, running from the cops, they are awesome in every aspect. Plus this is comin from a kid with fat feet so these things definitely have the comfort factor goin for it. Definitely recommended to anyone who wants a good pair of waterproof hikers that can do everything.
San Clemente Island, CA was the proving ground for these kicks. These shoes were reliable for six months (20 days per month), hiking volcanic canyons and steep terraces. Cons: jagged rocks and cactus penetrate mesh, causing damage.
I got these shoes on a thursday, pulled them out of the box and went on a short 3 mile hike on friday. They were great. I carried about 40lbs of gear and they were very supportive and comfortable.
Not only are these shoes dead sexy to look at, they perform like Michael Jordan on steroids too. Super comfortable, awesome grip, and waterproof. So long to jumping over streams - use the lazy way, walk through 'em & you won't get wet (just watch your socks, beacause they're low cut.) Every avid day hiker should own a pair of these.
It became rapidly apparent that these shoes were made with wide feet in mind. This meant that they took 3rd party inserts beautifully. Field Tests in Escalante indicate that they feel nice on your feet, breathe well, and won't protect your feet from knee-deep pools of reddish muck. The stiffness of them took a little adjustment, but once they were broken in and I got used to them, I found them super nice. Traction on the slickrock and sandstone was also top notch. This is a really great pair of hiking shoes for those of us who don't like the wieght and movement restriction of high tops.
