Contagrip on the bottom isn't shy about grabbing a piece of the ground so you stay vertically oriented, even when moving with a purpose over sleet-slicked cobblestones.

Great walking shoes
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
- Fit:Runs large
- Size Bought: 7.5
My sister and I have planned a trip to the UK and we wanted to find comfortable walking shoes. I ordered the petunia - the color is exactly as pictured on the website. They look purple to me but my sister says they look blue to her. Regardless, the color is nice. I normally wear an 8 but based on other reviews, I bought the 7.5. They fit perfectly and feel great. I have taken several city walks on uneven sidewalks on very hot days - my feet don't hurt at all, they stay cool, and the arch support is perfect for my high arches. I've always just worn running shoes for walking and didn't expect to tell any big difference in these, but I can honestly say my feet felt better after a walk in these shoes than in any other shoe I've owned. No blisters or hot spots on my toes or ankles, and plenty of room for my wide feet even in the smaller size. I highly recommend them. And kudos to backcountry.com...the shoes arrived very quickly in perfect condition. I'll definitely come back for future purchases.
Go-To shoes for wet, cold, even snow
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
- Fit:True to size
I've had these shoes for seven months, and we've been through a lot together. From damp, rainy hikes with the pup, to hiking at Mt. Rainier over snowfields and slippery volcanic rock, these are some pretty great and versatile hikers.
They are definitely waterproof. Rain and snow beads up and doesn't cause any wet sock misery. The gusseted tongue is a bonus: keeps trail riffraff outta my shoes. Good stable sole design with a quite roomy toe box. While I consider these true to size, I sized up from my normal 9 to a 9.5 to save my toenails. I size up in all hiking/running shoes.
Two cons that I've run into: insole and material used for the sole itself. I wish Salomon would have used a nicer insole. The existing one is a piece of thin foam that fits poorly in the arch area. It is, however, easily removable so you can use your own insole of choice. Second, I'm finding that the lugs in the inner part of the sole at the forefoot and heel are wearing down faster than the outer part of the sole. They should have used a slightly sturdier material for longevity.
Overall, love these shoes. They are my go-to's.
Decent outdoor shoe
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
- Fit:True to size
I got these shoes to wear to work 40 hours a week. I am a landscaper so waterproof is very important to me. The shoe fits comfortably like any gym shoe would, and was nice because work boots I have worn in the past needed "breaking in" time or feel bulky. I did notice for me, the toe area was a bid wide for my feet. Never had any issues with treads or slipping. The waterproof lasted until the bottom of the shoe started to split from the fabric, but my shoes take a good beating at work. Was happy how long they survived and were nice and breathable for hot summer Chicago weather.
