    Need for speed.

The Salewa Men's Speed Ascent Hiking Shoe looks like a trail running shoe, so feel free to treat it as such if the approach isn't going fast enough. Salewa's Take-Off Technology curves the Vibram Rollingait System for a rolling heel-to-toe transition that promotes a faster trek. Take-Off Technology also assists with optimizing motion in lower limbs, easing muscle recoveriy, and ensuring long-lasting comfort on long trails.

The Speed Ascent also features Salewa's MFF+ Multi-Fit Footbed that customizes to your foot for a personal touch of comfort. A drawcord lace gives the Overlap Closing a secure feel. The upper uses Microfibra suede for durability, mesh for ventilated airflow, and Salewa's highly wear-resistant microfiber fabric that stays strong for seasons.

    Excellent Trail Shoe!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 9.5

This shoe is an excellent trail hiking and even running shoe. It's lightweight, just supportive enough, and the rockered sole really does feel faster...maybe it just makes me think I'm faster, who knows. I've taken good care of mine and they've been with me for over 1,000 miles, including a through hike of the Colorado Trail. The seams are beginning to blow out and the lacing is difficult to repair as it frays, but for as much as I've used them they're doing great. For the first hundred or so miles I had a similar problem as a previous reviewer with a blistering heel in the same place, but eventually the shoe broke in, or I got a better callous.
These shoes are really excellent on trail, but if you're doing much rock scrambling, more technical approaches, or bagging more technical peaks don't expect them to perform like a dedicated approach shoe. The sole design does not allow for very precise toe placement, and the sole is soft enough that it flexes considerably over uneven surfaces, making navigating scree fields rather painful.
Overall an excellent shoe for trail hiking/running/ultralight-backpacking. I'm planning to buy another pair as soon as mine finally wear out.
I'm typically a 10.5 but I have these in 9.5 and its perfectly snug.

    Great shoe!

I put these on yesterday for a hike up Buffalo Mountain in Silverthorne, CO. The hike is about 70% rock, and I wondered how these would be given the terrain. They proved to be excellent, and the sole provided great grip. This is a strenuous hike and I've done it before with different footwear. These shoes felt much better than what I was accustomed to and I feel they made me more agile on my hike. The fit seemed a little tight in the toe box area at first, but used them again today and the fit felt perfect. I am glad I made the decision to try these out, and plan to buy a pair for my daughter.

Unfortunately these shoes rubbed the skin off my left heel in the first 30 minutes of wearing them. They definitely are the right size as I'm a 10 and they run true to size.
Thankfully I remembered the number one rule when hiking in shoes you've never worn - bring another pair with you!
These shoes are heavy duty. They are very well built. Assuming they didn't rub the skin off my heel I'm not sure they would be the right shoe for the type of hiking that I do within a 2-3 hour drive of Washington DC. When I hike I like to run as much of the trail as possible. I think these shoes are for more heavy duty hiking then actual trail running. The weight of the shoe and the rockered sole might beat your body up a bit if you ran long distance in them. Just to note these are in the hiking section of the company's website.
I'm not one of those people that is going to rate a pair of shoes 1 star just because they didn't work for me. They've won numerous awards so they must work for some people. Assuming they didn't cause blisters and you were wearing them for the right type of environment they would be pretty kick ass shoes.

Just to note, in the picture I was in the process of putting my back up shoes on so that's why you're seeing a different shoe on my right foot.
