Description

A tough act to follow.

The Salewa Women's Alp Trainer Mid GTX Hiking Boot gives you feel of an approach shoe—thanks to its tough rand and to-the-toe lacing—as well as the comfort and light weight of a hiking shoe. How hard is this feat to pull off? Hard enough that Backpacker Magazine endowed the men's version of this boot with the 2011 Editor's Choice award. Not many boots manage that, do they?

  • Gore-Tex Extended Comfort membrane blocks water and lets your feet breathe so you stay dry and comfortable
  • 3F heel system uses a steel cord to transfer lace support around your feet, giving you exceptional support and fit without hampering movement
  • EVA midsole and PU shock absorber cushion your foot on descents, and the Multi-Fit Footbed allows you to adjust the volume of the footbed in the shoe for a perfect fit
  • A thin neoprene ankle collar keeps sand and debris from working into the boot and causing hot spots
  • KEVLAR® rands give you durable protection from abrasive rocks and increase your grip when your hike starts to look more like a climb
  • Extended climbing lacing towards the front allows you to dial in your fit
  • Vibram Hike Approach soles gives your feet great traction even on slippery surfaces

sometimes kill my heels

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

the best boot ever for a narrow feet or low volume feet, really sticky sole for clambering over rocks,if water gets on the top of boot either from rain or crossing stream feet get wet...I live on the wet coast! The big problem for me are the blisters, tried different socks, different ways of tying laces, mole skin.Sometimes get blisters sometimes not,I think its to do with where the steel cord is,I am determined to get through this as really I have never had a boot that fit so well and after a 21km hike very steep in places I managed to run the last 3km as the boot is so light and flexible and yet supportive.

Great hiking & approach boot!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've had this boot for 2 seasons now, and I use it for hiking and a bit of scrambling. I love the lightness of this boot, the snug fit, the ankle support, the rubber welt to protect from rocks, the flared heel which provides great stability going down rocks & steep trails. I love the forefoot flex which lets my foot roll normally. I definitely would buy another pair of these, but right now, mine are still in good shape.

bootboot riot

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I would say these run true to size, however, considering it is a hiking/backpacking boot I'd suggest sizing up 0.5 size from what you generally order to allow your foot some space to swell up without giving you a ton of blisters, especially if you are planning on wearing a thicker sock. I have really narrow feet, these worked out really well for me, do not get these if you have a wide foot, they will not work for you even with the multi-fit foot bed adjusted to the smaller option. I love that the laces go all of the way down to the toes, you can really customize your fit with that feature. The Heel set up is amazing, I have absolutely no heel slippage with this boot.
It took me a few 5 mi. hikes in these for them to start breaking in.

I have the Salewa Alp Trainer GTX womens in a 7.5, which is my usual size in hiking boots. I have pretty narrow feet and they fit great -- but I have to use a super low-volume insole (the Sole ones provide great arch support for me but I have to use the really thin one, making for a pretty hard surface that my poor forefoot is landing on). Anyone have experience trying a half size up to be able to fit a thicker/cushier insole? Or will I just end up with a boot that's too long and a different t of problems? This is still the best boot I've ever found for my foot; did 2 hard weeks trekking in Bhutan with them and did fine even with the thin insole -- just looking for an even more comfortable alternative for next time :-)

Salewa Women, Around the World & Back

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I first purchased the Salewa Alp Trainer Women's Hiking Boots for trekking in Iceland. From the snow covered glaciers to the waves crashing over our boat on the open ocean in search of whales, I was the only one in the group whose feet stayed warm & dry. So I brought them with me to New Zealand, South America, and back again. No matter the weather conditions, terrain, or temperature, these are the best pair of hiking boots I have ever owned, and I wouldn't trade them for the world!

I need this boot in a size 11. ASAP, of course! I Can't find it anywhere. Any insight?

Hey there, unfortunately we don't have size 11 in our inventory. Sorry for the bad news. Have you tried the 'find a dealer near you' feature on the Salwea website? Maybe try and give the dealers a call to see if they have a 11 in stock? Here is the link to Salwea;

Hope this helps!

Is the 1 lb 2 oz weight for one boot or the pair?

Responded on

Hey Mary Ann, thanks for the question.
The 1lb 2 oz will be the weight for one boot, so the total weight will be around 2lbs 4 oz.

Are these shoes (9.5 women's) good for people with narrow feet? I really want these to work for me!

Responded on

Most people find the Salewas to run narrow to medium in width. They come with a 2 layer insole which allows you to adjust both volume and, by raising your foot in the shoe, a bit of width. Give 'em a try!

Great boot

I work with Paragon Guides and have been looking for a lighter hiking boot. This boot has been perfect so far, and wore well right out of the box. If you need a boot for trail and off trail hiking with only a light pack then this is a boot for you. The lacing system make for alot of adjustment in the boot fit. Cant wail to get them on the trail again.

I would love to try this boot. Does it run true to size?

Responded on

Salewas run a bit small. I had to go up a full size when I tried them on.

Responded on

I disagree. I bought my usual size 9 and it is a tad too big. I'm pretty sure the 8.5 would be too small though so I am keeping them. There are 2 insoles inside, you can use both for a smaller fit or take one out and it will give a little more room.

I would love to try this boot. Is it made in a women's 10.5

Responded on

No. The size range for women's Salewa boots is 6-10(by 1/2 sizes) and 11. Sorry, but no 10.5. The forefoot runs med to narrow and it has an adjustable volume insert. Perhaps a 10 or an 11 may work for you.

I wore these boots to hike Mount Marcy in rainy condition. These boots were not slippery and felt very comfortable but my feet were totally soaked with water. They are not waterproof.
