One-of-a-kind.

Salewa packed the Women's Alp Trainer GTX Hiking Shoe with a host of technical features that you usually find on approach footwear to create a totally unique hiking shoe. Light, supportive, nimble, and waterproof, the Alp Trainer GTX shoe is ready to make your next hike a memorable one.

  • 3F heel system uses a steel cord to transfer lace support around your feet, giving you exceptional support and fit without hampering movement
  • EVA midsole and PU shock absorber cushion your foot on descents, and the Multi-Fit Footbed allows you to adjust the volume of the footbed in the shoe for a perfect fit
  • KEVLAR® rands give you durable protection from abrasive rocks and increase your grip when your hike starts to look more like a climb
  • Extended climbing lacing towards the front allows you to dial in your fit
  • Vibram Hike Approach soles gives your feet great traction even on slippery surfaces

I bought these for my lady as an all day hiking shoe. She really likes them, but does complain about them being narrow and as a result her feet will get cold. Hopefully when the warmth of the summer really kicks in.

I have super narrow feet, and am looking for a light hiking shoe - for long day hikes and to possibly carry up to 25 pounds on short backpacking trips. Would the Alp or the Firetail GTX be a better bet?

Fitwise, either the Alp Trainer or the Firetail should work well for you. They run on the med to narrow side, plus you can adjust the volume with the included multi-layer footbed. The Alp Trainer is a bit beefier in general and has a deeper lugged outsole. The Firetail is a bit more designed as an "Approach" shoe (stickier rubber, no deep lugs). The call may depend on the terrain you are in and whether you like a lighter or a stronger shoe. Enjoy!

If you are looking for a fairly light weight (in comparison to a boot) shoe, that can take a beating - this shoe will do it. I would say that they run true to size - i wear a size 8 in just about every other shoe brand, and these fit about the same- however, i would say that if you have a wider foot, this may not be the right shoe for you. I thought there might be a lengthy break in period with these shoes, since they have a very stiff sole, but i changed out the footbed to some gel insoles, and they are heaven. Able to cradle your feet in an array of conditions, from craggy rough, rocky, scree, to shallow bogs of weeds and swamp. I wore these out in BFE for some field work, and they were looking pretty wrecked - just hosed 'em off, and they were good as new. Never had that feeling of soppy feet - GO Gortex!!! And when i got stuck in a mini mud bog, they hung on tight (can't say that about any old shoe).

My feet are average width and even with the laces that run down to the toe the shoe was still to Narrow. They are true to size. I liked the look and tread and wanted their water resistance but alas.

Ditto on "true to size". The fit leans toward the mid to narrower side, but the volume is adjustable with the Multi-Fit footbed.
