Best Fast Action Rod Under $500

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Being a college student, I don't really have the funds to buy a premium fast action rod like the Sage One or Scott Radian, but this rod is absolutely amazing. I spent quite a bit of time at my local fly shop casting rods well out of my price range and while this one may lack some of the minute details that make those rods so expensive, this rod can compete with all of them. It is great for casting heavy nymph rigs on big rivers, lighter nymph rigs on smaller streams, and small dry flies. While it does all of these things great, one place where it impressed me more than anything, is casting big, air resistant hoppers. It will through some of the tightest loops and high line speeds all day long. I bought the 9 foot 5 weight and it will be a great all day trout rod for anyone.

Fish Don't Stand a Chance

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This rod is great, made of nice, durable materials, and is lightweight too. A sleek looking rod that is perfect for casting heavier flies overall Further, the 8wt is great for those wanting a double threat in order to fish salt water and larger fresh water fish. Definitely a fast action rod, again great for landing those fish you will tell stories about and helping you to handle difficult fish more easily overall. Although it is a bit pricey, the lifetime warranty makes it truly worth it. Worth every penny!

Great Rod

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used an older version of this Sage rod in numerous locations and to catch a variety of fish. The six weight rod has been very versatile for me in my transition from southwest Colorado trout fishing to catching some of the smaller salmon species in Alaska. The tip action is very quick and responsive to mending and various types of casting. It handles feisty fish very well and has a strong backbone for fish in current and making long casts. I have been hesitant to use my 6 weight rod to catch anything bigger than a red (Sockeye) or pink (Humpy) salmon in Alaska. These fish tend to be under ten pounds and that makes the fight just right on the 6-weight.
An aggressive silver (Coho) weighing over fifteen pounds may be too much for the 6-weight so I tend to use my 8-weight for the silvers.
The only negative I have are Sage gear tends to be a little expensive, but the warranties are worth paying the extra money for a high quality piece of gear.

Premium rod at a great price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Sage makes some of the best rods and this one is no different. Performance and feel were not sacrificed to bring an affordable rod to the market. The casting accuracy is on point and this rod packs a punch. Nothing bad to say about this one!
