Seems to fit my 50lb lab well. Looking forward to seeing how the dog likes wearing it in the water!
Such a great product
We have had two float coats since summer '10 for our hounds (55 lb Bernese/Husky mix, 50 lb boxer mix: both wear mediums that fit great) and could not have spent the money any better. These coats keep their heads above the water through light rapids, keep them buoyant after long hours in lakes and definitely work well as sleeping pads too! The handles are nice and are robust, I have hauled both them into the canoe or raft many times and never doubted the handle would hold. The yellow color is visible in the water or land when the wander too far. A must have for any pack that heads for the water as the days lengthen!
Pruhdoe in Lifejacket
Ruffwear Portage Float Coat Dog Lifejacket
I bought them for next season.
The material and quality seems very good.
Will follow up in July 2012 on good they float my dog.
Adjustable straps did not work for us
Overall I thought this product was good (the quality of the material was wonderful). I felt it fit my 17 lb. Whippet/Jack Russell better than it fit my 86 lb. Lab. I am returning them because the excess from the straps does not meet our expectations. There is a Velcro strap to hold the excess but it came loose too frequently. The Big Eddy jacket fit our large dog much better and the straps do not have the option to hang loose beneath.
Im pretty sure the pics above are of the 'big eddy' not the portage.
I hear rapids...
Dutch stands up to prepare for the rapids he hears downstream! Time to get wet!
Our Black Lab "Cooper" love's his new vest.. We previously had purchased another dog vest and they did not uphold at all and certainly did not have the quality as this Ruffwear lifejacket.. Our lab is 113 lbs and swims in our pool all day long. He is recovering from an ACL surgery and this vest "Totally" helped in his recovery. Great Fit... and easy mobility I would recommend this vest for anyone that has a dog that loves to swim!
Great for Beginning Swimmer!
the Portage lifejacket has the most flotation of Ruffwear lifejackets and should be picked for dogs new to water or with less buoyancy or as just a standard lifejacket.
If your dog is an active water dog, then I would recommend the big eddy life jacket (BC #RUF0050) as this one is a little more streamlined if the dog is going to be wearing it for many hours/days.

I have a 7 month old cocker spaniel. She is 19'' in girth. I saw some reviews that said the sizes weren't accurate. She shouldn't get too much bigger. Should I go with a XS or S?
I would get the XS since it is for 17"-24"
Don't forget to factor in her hair when taking the measurement; but since the XS covers a wide size range, you will be fine. I haven't had any sizing issues, except when I measured around the puffy hair instead of against the skin!
I will also make a quick review/note:

Yeah, this is a little pricey for a life vest for a dog, but it's totally worth it.
My 60lb Lab/Pit mix used to get sick from swallowing water every time he went swimming. With the vest, he get's that extra bit of flotation he needs to keep his head above water! The handle on top helps me yank him out when he can't quite climb up the side of the pool or lake by himself.
It seems like it's going to last forever.
I love these life jackets...they look sharp - not cutesy like the ones you find at Petco. Heavy duty and allow your dog to still be as agile as ever. the handle on the top is so handy in the drift boat. I have a medium for my 55 pound dog, a large for my 80 pound dog, and a small for my 25 pound dog.
Awesome! Got two retrievers now
I have a Boston Terrier that always acted like he wanted to swim, but would chicken out as soon as he couldn't touch bottom. This life jacket solved that. He loves swimming now that he knows he won't sink. The jacket fits him well, and it must be comfortable, because he still runs around like mad while he has it on. In my experience, the sizing is a little off. My dog is right in the middle of the XS size range. I ordered XS first, and it was way too small. Backcountry exchanged for a small, no questions asked, and it fits perfectly.
My boys love this vest!
AJ and Burley love wearing this vest. It floats well and doesn't rub them under their legs/arm pits. It is perfect for kayaking with the boys. I have seen them swim class 4 no problem. The handle on the back is perfect for pulling them out of the water and back into the raft.
Our boy dutch came along on our 40 mile, 6 day float. He wore the lifejacket anytime we were on the move and it didn't bother him at all. Also, the lifejacket doubles as a sleeping pad for your pup.
Keep rover afloat...
Our family dog is an Italian mastiff, a very heavy boy... We were a bit worried what we would do with him when we got into floating rivers. He was never a water dog, but when we got this life-vest for him he found a new love! Once he realized that he could not sink, he was in the water all day! He is now a great swimmer! When he gets bucked off the boat in the rapid's i have the peace of mind knowing that he will always float!! Great product...
