This pack does not seem to impede my dog's mobility (or speed).
It might look like this shot was taken on the moon, but this was on a hike in the Uinta Range in early June.

This is a profile shot to show how the pack fits on my dog's body.
She is about 50lbs and very barrel chested and muscular - she wears a size Small.

Our dog is a burro

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Our dog, Memphis, wears this backpack on just about every hike we go on - we refer to her as our burrito when wearing it since she looks like a little pack mule. We purchased this pack partially so she could carry her own water, but, also to slow her down a little since she is a speedy devil.
We love this backpack because the harness fits well and can be worn with or without the pack attached. The pack is big enough to fit the two included water bottles as well as food (if it's an overnight trip) and her poop (on the opposite side from her food).
We also like that the harness has a nice big handle on top which my husband has used on numerous occasions to carry the dog like a suitcase to get her down sketchy rocky sections.
The only thing we haven't loved about this bag is that the plastic used to make the water bottles can crack if you aren't careful with them (we have had this backpack about 2 years so this may no longer be an issue if they changed the composition of the bottles)

Worth the extra cost

  • Gender: Female

This may be the most expensive dog pack out there, but I didn't want to take any chances on having it fall apart, or having it rub or wear wrong on my dog! I spent more on my dog's pack than my own!
She loves it, and had no issues wearing it with a week's worth of food. You do have to be pretty careful to make sure the load is even, and I still had to adjust it every once in a while, but it works like a champ! The added water bladders were great, too! I loved that I could unclip the pack itself and doubled as a bear bag to hang the dog food!

This has held up to rough wear and tear very well. I totally trust this brand for all future outdoor dog purchases.

Worth the extra cost
Harness very helpful too!

I love that the pack comes off when you reach camp and you can use the harness separate on treks out and about! Really helps to have the harness to help give him a lift when necessary or grab hold of him on a trail.

I swear he has a sense of purpose and contribution when he carries his own stuff - plus he knows it means we're going somewhere fun!

Goldendoodle Backpacks In Real Comfort

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We bought the medium for our 70 pound best friend, Buddy. Fitting is really simple & straightforward. We started in our local park, just to practice. We divided a pound or two of kibble into two ziplocs so he had even weight on the two sides. It actually didn't seem like the pack felt as good to him when it was empty! Getting used to the base harness was nothing, piece of cake, but when we first clipped on the packs he would walk ten steps then stop. This didn't last long, though. With encouragement Buddy soon became accustomed and now he's RUNNING down the trail in it! I'm convinced he understands?he sees us hump our packs, and he knows he has to hump his own, clever fellow. The included droms are great, but we'll need more water on the trail for sure. Really well made gear and seems they have a careful eye for the comfort of your dog. We really love Ruffwear. Their martindale collar is fantastic (I think they call it Chain Reaction?) , and we have their Summitrex (sp?) dog boots for the Budster too which were SO great for him in the icy winter (BOY did he ever get attention at Breckinridge!) but now we're planning to bring them on the backpacking trail, too, just in case the terrain gets too rocky. We use them with socks BTW which makes them easy to put on.

LOVE THIS!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

It took me a while to finally get my dog a pack and this is so worth it. Now he can pack his own water and food. This pack comes with 2 pouches of water for your dog which is great. My dog is a 45lb aussie and the medium fits him great. It is best if you don't tie the pack on too tight so he still has room to shake and move.

LOVE THIS!

Could a smaller pack fit a harness one...

Could a smaller pack fit a harness one size larger???

Best Answer Responded on

Probably but that gets expensive fast. The pack has very good compression straps so I don't think you'd run into much of an issue if you have it packed lighter with stuff. We actually rarely use the pack full (we have the small though for our 40 lb border collie). I do wish ruffwear made a singletrack style tube that would attach to the pack or something much smaller so we could put tiny bits on our dog but benefit from the harness.

Great pack - love that his highlands bed fits right into the pouch! First day out and he ran into lots of trees but didn't seem to mind. Fits great - easy to get on and off. Full review after he backpacks with it! But just like us with a new pack, gotta break it in first.

Durable Pack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great pack, extremely durable and has decent size pockets. He can easily carry a weeks worth of food, his bowls and a few extra things no problem. There is a lot of room for adjustability but it can be difficult with the sleeves the enclose the straps on the dogs belly. Good news is once you have the sizing set, you wont have to move it again. Overall great pack/harness

Make'em carry their own food.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

And then make them carry the garbage back out.

We've taken the Filthy Animal with this pack on a dozen or so backpacking trips. The pack works great. Be sure to balance the load in both sides so the pack does not ride lopsided.

Lately we have been making him carry out the dirty diapers. So awesome.

Backpacking the AT with my pooch

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This pack (size small) fit my cattle dog like a glove. The two water bladders really enabled us to make it between freshwater springs with no worries. My dog wore this pack with ease over the rockiest part of the trail in PA. We also use it for day hikes on a weekly basis. The top pockets make it really easy to access items quickly, and I love that I can unhook the backs and let my dog romp and swim in the harness. The measurement guide on this website ran true two size. Malarky and I LOVE this pack.

Deso pouting because he is wearing his harness but I am making him sit instead of going somewhere fun- he gets excited when it comes out of the closet now.
