Description

For experienced backcountry hounds.

Pack the Rufffwear Palisades Pack's removable saddlebags with a few days' worth of dog food, fill the hydration bladders, and use the five-point-adjustable harness to secure this pack on your pup. Two side-release buckles connect the Palisades Pack and harness, allowing the chassis and the saddlebags to easily separate for fitting, water crossings, and rest stops. Two hydration bladders, one carried in each side of the pack, carry water and cushion your dog from gear and food within the pack, aid in keeping the dog cool, and can be used to balance the load from side to side. *Measure around widest part of rib cage for girth measurement. If your dog is in between sizes, choose the smaller pack.

Teaching Koda to bike Jore

Posted on

We used this harness along with the roamer leash to teach him how to bike-jore. He's starting to get the hang of it.

Koda loves it

We got this pack because with it, we'll be able to take our Husky backpacking with us, but whenever we aren't in the backcountry, we can remove the saddlebags and just use it as a normal harness. We've been using this harness along with the Roamer leash to teach our dog to bike-jore. I'll post a video below. The harness gives a snug fit so that when he's pulling the load is evenly distributed and not just around his neck like some other harnesses.

Awesome Pack

We love this pack. It's worth every penny. Our dog loves it too. Love how you can take off the bags and leave the harness on. Seems comfortable to dog. Well made. Really no complaints here.

Now a worthy hiking buddy ...

What can I say, I couldn't get this pack fast enough on my alaskan husky for him to run off with it and play like he didn't even notice it was on him. Since he is a sled dog he was already harness broken though.

The pack itself is not the lightest, but I guess it makes up by its sturdy built and nice little features. I did think the internal water blatters were a nice addition for both padding (I just blew them up when I didn't put any water in) and water supply. I got the M for my dog and wasn't sure how much would actually fit in, but I was amazed at how much room these bags offer. My one dog carried dry dog food for 3 days for 2 dogs plus some water. Because my 2 dogs love to play, the pack sure didn't stop them and I was surprised at how well the thing stayed in place although they were jumping all over each other and rolling on the ground.

One thing that I found a little bit annoying was the velcro straps on the sides that stop the bags from 'flopping' around the harness. The first time I closed it I guess the velcro wasn't completely covered and kinda rubbed on the strap and messed it up a bit. Plus they are a bit tedious to close if you have an impatient dog.
Other than that the pack was definitely nice to have so I didn't have to carry the dog's stuff as well.

Awesome Pack

First pack we have used and its awesome. I got the medium for my 60 lb German Shepherd Bailey. She loves it. Fits great and has plenty of room for doggie gear. Quality of the pack seems great so far. It's been through water, rolled in the dirt, and brushed against trees and still looks new.

Jared, I do not own this pack but have been doing research to buy one for my dog Charlie. Most reviews suggest sizing up if you are between sizes.

Good, sturdy, girthy pack

Steady. Well balanced. Wide load coming through.
Waker is 90 lbs. Large fit good. He had a little bit of excess strap to work with under the belly. As far as the chest strap goes, spot on.
I loaded the pack with towels and full 32 oz. Nalgene bottles on each side. I included a jacket on one side and some mittens on one side and a pair of mittens on the other side to fatten things out. With weight in mind, no more than 5 lbs. on each side should fill this pack. Some water, most of his food, and a few poop bags is what this pack should carry.
Along the top is clip-in for a leash, which works well. I do not feel I could repel this dog from any distance using this as a harness.
The Pack is full of space to fill anything the dog needs....foldable water bowl, extra treats. A leash can be stored, attached, to the pack to make for easy access. You have to be thoughtful. Workable when you need to grab onto an already leashed dog!
Only trouble is getting the mule (dog) to move when fully loaded. Practice before fully loading. When your pack is heavy, who wants to carry your dogs goods?

Good, sturdy, girthy pack

Small, Medium, or Large? How do I know which size to get for my dog. I have a Labrakita that weighs 63lbs. Her body style is more of a medium Labrador, but I don't know whether to get her the medium or the large. Where do I measure on her and what measurements would indicate a medium size or a large?

Hey there, good question... for Ruffwear packs/coats you measure the circumference of the largest part of their body; usually just behind the front legs around the chest... check the pic for sizing. BTW, great pack, I love that the harness is separate from the pack (like a horse) so you can take just the pack panniers off on the trail for a break without removing everything!

Great pack...until it busted

Ditto what sum said: great pack until the front clip broke. Now it's useless.

Fitting was also a PIA.

That said, I wouldn't buy any other dog pack. The ability to detach the load from the harness is incredibly useful, and the harness itself has helped me haul my dog over what for him would be otherwise unpassable terrain. We even rigged a pulley system once to lift him up a rock face in the Mojave.

What a dog

Seems like a great pack, but the front clip broke on the very first use, mid hike. I ended up carrying it and my dog's water as the pack kept falling off to the side. The customer service sucks, too. It's an expensive pack. I've sent three emails, working on my forth without any response.

Don't buy it until they fix this "known flaw", as the first customer service rep stated.

Exceptional build quality

The build quality on this dog pack is better than any pack I use myself. Love it's versatility too. I have two dogs...English lab (short and squat, think small hippo ~65lbs) and a golden (tall and skinny ~70lbs). I bought a medium and it works great on both body shapes. The older lab has knee issues, so we just use the harness without the packs to help her along when needed, or we can load it up work horse style for the golden. Great product!

Great Pack and Functionality

This pack has been great. It's been very durable and easy to use. I really like the ability to remove the pack from the harness. Also, the harness is really easy to adjust and stays in place. This makes using the handle to pick up your dog over shelves our sharp rocks really nice.

Is this thing waterproof? I have a 100 lb (one year old) golden retriever that is a Water Dog. Looking at a 10 day hike through the Bob Marshall Wilderness in our home state of Montana. This dog WILL swim even if we're just walking next to a small creek. He'll find the deepest..... You get the picture....

Responded on

No. The ballistic nylon will shed a fair amount of moisture in the form of rain or splashing, but if he goes into the water with it, the pack and it's contents will be soaked.

Ziplock baggies are your friend here... my old dog was the same way!

Best Dog Pack On The Market!

I have several of these packs for my different sized trail dogs, we swear by them. We use the harness to secure them in the car (or bed of the truck) via a tether and we use the pack to carry their food, first aid kit, and water. The pack really works nice, and the compression straps on each side helps keep the pack tight and as close to the body as possible.

The fact that the pack is removable from the harness, and the harness by itself is worth the price of the upgrade from their other pack, I think this pack is a no-brainer over their other less expensive pack.

I rated it 4 stars only because I think the water bladders are useless - the material they are made out of leaks very easily and will crack if you use them in near freezing temps. I removed all of them from the packs we own and replaced them with the 2L MSR "Dromedary" Bags which fit perfectly.

Ruffwear is a great company, I really like their stuff.

This is a pic of Kona, my male Kai Ken, wearing the Ruffwear "Palisades" pack. He uses a size small, he's 20" at the shoulders and 45lbs.
