Looking back on the complaints against 29ers over the years is like reviewing the gradual development of today's sciences across the centuries. From our present vantage, it all seems so foolish, but ideas like a flat earth, all matter being reducible to four elements, and that letting blood would cure the body's troubled humors were once accepted as capital-t Truth. With the RockShox RS-1 ACS Solo Air 120 fork and Rise 60 29in Wheels, we gladly lay to rest another specious axiom: the noodly 29in wheel.
Various aspects of the Predictive Steering front end combo ensure a stiff, sharply tracking front end, but the Torque Tube axle construction and carbon fiber rims are the key contributors. Of all wheel sizes, 29ers benefit most from the stiffness of carbon since their larger diameter makes them more prone to flex. That added stiffness isn't compromised in the hub, which involves running a standard Maxle Ultimate axle through a 27mm Torque Tube, which serves as an added element of reinforcement to reduce torsional flex.
The wheels' construction design makes its own contributions to stiffness, with wider flange spacing and an asymmetric rim shaping shortening the spokes and improving their bracing angle. These two changes effectively stiffen the spokes, further reducing flex to ensure there's no weak link in the fork/wheelset chain. The fork's inverted design also follows this stiff-at-all-costs ethos, allowing for a huge, uninterrupted sheath of carbon on the uppers that finishes the stiffness sandwich in style, recommending it as the ultimate XC or marathon setup for hardtails or low-travel 29ers.
