The best line out there, for me anyhow.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this line on my 5wt and 3wt for over three years now, just now buying it for my 4wt after trying some SA line... needless to say I won't be returning(sorry loyal SA fans). I had some cheaper lines before I began using this(The Cortland big box special and Rio MainStream), and to be honest I was quite skeptical. I mean, its just line, it can't be that different, and this stuff is over 70 bucks? Jesus! I took out my 5wt after I begrudgingly forked over the coin - my jaw hit the river. This stuff flows through your guides like melted butter - so smooth. It can do it all - delicate enough for sz. 20 dries or throw your streamers and everything in between. 3 years later and this line is still in good shape with no signs of wear, cracking or any of that stuff. Do yourself a favor and order it. You won't regret it.

Terrific Line

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I paired this with an NRX LP (5WT) and it is superb. It loads reasonably well at short distances, but I think where it shines is it maintains loop stability at longer distances due to a nearly 10 foot longer head length compared to the Grand. I feel I'm able to cast farther with less "work". I've got the Grand on my 8-wt, but it's also a completely different rod. The Grand should be better for ultra fast action rods due to the shorter and heavier head. Consider your rod's action and also how far you anticipate you need to cast. Remember the majority of fish are usually caught in the 25-40 ft cast range...

Great all around floating fly line!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Not much to say besides it does what it's supposed to. Great standard floating line, floats like it's supposed to (not all brands can say this), doesn't coil up, and lasts a while even with some abuse. Unless you specifically know you want some kind of specialty line, this is the stuff.

This is a good line.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am by no means an advanced fly fisherman, but I upgraded with this line after getting tired of the stock line on my cabela's set up. It has much less memory and I have noticed an improved touch with dries. It is easy to mend while nymphing.

"Gold" Standard

The Rio gold Fly Line has a great all around taper that is suited best for today's faster action rods for someone that likes a line that can do it all. I wouldn't throw it on a super fast action rod, but might look to the Rio Grand taper for that. This line provides a super soft touch and great feel, but ins't the most durable line out there. The more you keep it clean the longer it will last and the better it will perform.

Great all-around fly line

My husband says the line is easy to rig up and very reactive to the cast. Perfect father's day gift.

The best all-around fly line

I've tried many other comparable fly lines, and I keep coming back to the Rio Gold. It's not too stiff, presents well on the water and is easy to cast on almost any rod. Excellent for dry flies and works well for nymphing too.

Responded on

Concur. This is a very subtle line which does not harden after use. Fishing is easier and more fun with a quality fly line.
