The Ride RFL SPDL Snowboard Boot serves as a milestone of modern snowboard boot technology and performance, setting the bar for other performance freeride boots to try to live up to. The RFL is stiff (8 out of 10 on Ride's scale), but it maintains extremely low weight without sacrificing features. Laced with all the game-changing tech you'd expect, the RFL's roster of features includes SPDL zonal speed lacing, ballistic Super Fabric exterior, and BlownLight Apex sole technology. Follow the leader—or even better, wear it.

The big story here is the lightweight traditional lacing system with Boa Coiler Tongue Tied System with The Closer technology. The Boa is a reel-type closure system that allows you to quickly and easily achieve a just-right fit that stays put; the Closer lace guide at the forefoot drives lace power down and evens the tension throughout the boot for a close, responsive fit without pressure points. The inner liner uses Lock Down Turbo to make it easier to get the liner tight and simple to release at the end of the day. Speaking of the inner liner, it's an Intuition Dream multiple Density Foam Liner. That means it's thermo-moldable to fit your foot perfectly and antimicrobial to reduce boot-stink. It even has an external skeleton for added support. Ride also included removable external J-bars that allow you to lock your heel down inside the boot while providing added comfort.

Shock-absorbing duties are taken care of by Ride's Gel Impact Pod heel insert, so your next flat landing won't feel so flat. The sole is Ride's Blown Light Apex, a combination of rubber and Phylon that provides previously unheard-of light weight and durability. To round out the RFL, Ride hooked it up with a natural-feeling articulating cuff and a 3D-formed tongue to eliminate shin-bang forever.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I broke the plastic lace clip after 5-6 days out. I'm concerned really fuckin light, also means less durable... Otherwise they're good, but not as stiff as they claim. like the Burton imperial these are actually a medium flex to me. The boa only version is as stiff as advertised.

Living room ride report

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I tried these on and gave them a spin around the living room.

Very nice boot. They've got their act together. Lacing was smooth, heel hold with the boa system really works, and the liners were cozy. Boot is light.

Ultimately there were two reasons I decided to return these boots though:

This boot is DEFINITELY not an 8/10. I'd say more like a 6. I was really surprised at how much give it had. Way softer than the nitro selects I used to own and softer than the teams I tried as well.

The toe box aslo felt a little narrower, I think this is more of a personal thing.

If you want a really light, comfy boot with great ankle support and hold, and you are looking for more of a medium flexing boot, I'd definitely put these at the front of the pack.. There's a reason they sell out every year after all.
