Once Reynolds figured out how to build a cross-country wheelset, they decided to take that knowledge and apply it to an all-mountain wheelset. The result is a set that is stronger and more durable, but still sports lightweight carbon-fiber rims. Behold the Reynolds Mountain AM Carbon Wheelset, a burly wheelset for serious off-road use that compares with mid-weight road wheel sets on the scale.
The heart of the wheelset is the AM high-modulus carbon-fiber rim. It's deeper, 25mm deep, and wider, with a 21mm internal channel, than their Mountain XC Wheels. The wider rim gives you a wider footprint and the depth gives you more strength. To better work with the realities of mountain biking, Reynolds uses traditional exposed alloy nipples. They're easier to true on the trail. They come with tubeless-ready Reynolds rim strips that allow you to choose between using tubed and tubeless tires.
The rims are laced to Reynolds hubs. The wheels have 28 straight-pull spokes in each. The front has cross-two on the left side and radial on the right, so it's strong enough to withstand heavy braking, but still saves some weight. The rear is cross-two on both sides to better resist the forces of heavy braking and hard pedaling.
The front hub has a 100g claimed weight, with a carbon-fiber center section affixed to two aluminum flanges. The hub works both as a traditional quick-release and as a 15mm thru-axle. All you have to do is change the end caps, both of which are supplied with the wheel.
The all-aluminum rear hub is also a transformer. It comes setup as a 135mm quick-release hub. With a 17mm cone wrench, you can convert it to either a 12 x 135mm thru-axle or a 12 x 142mm thru-axle. All the axles caps are supplied with the wheels. Thru-axles are frame specific and supplied by the manufacturer.
While the wheels should be plenty tough for adventurous riding, all Reynolds wheel owners can buy themselves some extra peace of mind by purchasing Reynolds' three-year damage protection plan. The Reynolds Mountain AM Carbon Wheelset comes with a set of valves for use with tubeless tires. Only use plastic tire levers with carbon-fiber rims; Reynolds specifically discourages the use of metal tires levers. The wheels are for disc brakes only and come with mounts for six-bolt rotors.

If you have not tried out carbon wheelsets, this is your chance for sure. Much less expensive than the Enve or Easton carbon wheelsets, and granted they weigh more but are still lighter than nearly all AM wheelsets out there.
The hubs are rebranded DT Swiss 240 hubs, so you know those are great and easy to service. Super stiff and strong wheels, your immediate engagement and acceleration are noticeable. The extra stiffness in the rims helps noticeably whenever you get up to speed. Well worth it, especially since backcountry gives you their return policy. Ran mine all last season and have never been happier even after my Chris King/ZTR flow rims.
