    The time is right.

By combining a versatile 41 millimeter front wheel with a rear wheel that's the cruise missile equivalent of racing kit, Reynolds' Tubeless-ready Assault/Strike Carbon Wheelset makes for the ideal setup for any ride where precise, consistent handling is as important as pure speed. Whatever your application, the Assault/Strike pairing helps keep you in contention, regardless if that involves a race against time or waiting till the time is right for a final attack.

As with the other members of Reynolds' Performance family, the key benefit these wheels enjoy over their predecessors is the addition of tubeless functionality. You can still run them as traditional clinchers, but the rims' redesigned shelves and lips hold a tubeless tire securely at low or high PSI. The lower rolling resistance and comfort of a tubeless ride is complemented by the wide rims, which Reynolds calls "modern" but we call less rolling resistance, better cornering, and plush comfort.

Reynolds' Enhanced SLG (Swirl Lip Generator) returns unchanged to boost the aerodynamics of the 41 and 62 millimeter front and rear rims, respectively. SLG is a 0.9mm lip of carbon beneath the rim's brake track that smooths airflow as it passes to the tapered spoke face. Tests at the A2 Wind Tunnel confirmed that it translates to a 12.5 second gain over a distance of 40 kilometers — a 35% improvement compared to models without SLG. SLG also reduces drag by 20% at a yaw angle of 10 degrees. According to Alphamantis, Inc., we spend most of our races at 10 degrees, so the Strike's Advanced SLG is most effective when we're most in need.

The CTg brake track is also bright spot as it addresses one of the ongoing drawbacks of carbon rims. CTg is a laminate Reynolds developed that can withstand around 100 more degrees Fahrenheit than typical carbon braking surfaces, all but eliminating the risk of the rim deforming or failing under long, hard brake use. The Strike SLGs also included Reynolds' proprietary Cryo-Blue Power brake pads, which work with the CTg laminate to produce more consistent (read: safer) braking. Safety is also improved through Reynolds' PR3 construction method, which uses different carbon fiber, epoxy, and resin for each of five rim regions.

    Follow-up Review: Fantastic!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Finally able to give the new wheelset more of a test and I am totally pleased with the result. This was my longest ride since rehabbing my right knee so I was still reluctant to give it 100% and my cardio level has definitely declined during the past few weeks of no or slow riding. But I did ride the same two 1 mile Strava segments I created last month to compare with my previous effort. Now before you make fun of my results, please keep in mind that I am over 60 years old and have only been riding since January. I'm sure many of you who read this can go a lot faster than me but hopefully you can use this info to estimate what improvements you might get with these wheels. My first ride in March with Axis 2 wheels and Specialized Espoir Elite tires (Roubaix Sport SL4 bike) I averaged 22 mph for one segment and 22.5 for the other. Today with the Reynolds Combo set (Specialized Turbo Pro tires), I did 24.2 mph and 23.5 mph on the segments. While the effort was very tiring, subjectively it just felt easier than the first ride with the stock Axis 2 wheels. Additionally, the bike felt more stable. Braking, while smooth, does feel a little less firm than on my aluminum wheels but it was not a problem and I felt like I could stop fast if I needed to. When I bought this wheelset, my son (a more experienced rider) bought the complete Strike wheelset and his results are similar. He has added at least 1+ mph improvements to his sustained run segments and increased his previous max speed by 3 mph. He gives the credit to the new Reynolds Strikes. So between him and me, it's 4 thumbs up on the Reynolds wheels. They are a bit pricey but if you can swing it, they'll make your ride faster and more fun.

    Initial Impression

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First, I want to comment on the outstanding customer service by the Back Country and Competitive Cyclist staff in helping me with my purchase. I had almost no waiting on the phone to talk to a rep, they expertly answered the questions I had before making the purchase, helped me make a change to my order after I had placed it online and I received the wheels by UPS on the day promised. I am very impressed by this company and would not hesitate to do business with them in the future. I liked the experience so much that I convinced my son to buy a Reynolds wheelset from them and he had the same great experience.
Now for the wheelset review. Unfortunately, a minor knee injury coincided with this purchase so I've only had a short ride at low speed and RPM. These wheels are designed for speed so, as my knee improves, I'll be pushing them faster and will do a follow-up review. But for my initial slow ride, the wheels were smooth and true. I couldn't resist a short acceleration and they seemed to spin up quickly. WIth the Turbo Pro tires, they are at least a pound lighter than the stock Axis 2/Espoir Elite wheelset that came on my bike. They look fantastic, almost like they were custom made for the color of my charcoal grey bike. My one concern is from the experience my LBS had setting them up on my bike. They told me that they had an extremely difficult time putting the tires on the rims and even pinch flatted the first tube they put on. They said to be prepared for some hard work when/if I get a flat.
So far, I am very satisfied and expect that when I can ride harder and faster, I will like them even more. Additionally, prior to my purchase, I called Reynolds Cycling with many questions about their wheels and to get their perspective on purchase options I was considering. Their support was also superb and I got the impression that they will stand behind their product completely, if I have any problems. They also gave me a 15% online discount code that can be used at their online store for bike stuff or towards their RAP, no questions asked, warranty.
Thank you back Country/ Competitive Cyclist. I look forward to doing business again with you in the future.

    Raced these, love these

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are a game changer. They are light, fast and very durable. They're cheaper than the super high end carbon wheels but retain 95% of the performance. Good solid brake track with no complaints. If youre interested in getting a pair of carbon wheels please contact me at robsmallman@backcountry.com
