There is a tail-bone protector but its very lightweight and does not have a hard shell backing on it.

I use this version in the men's every day I ride as both a thermal and some minor protection. I love it! (plus no one knows how lame I am for wearing it -- besides the fact that I just told the whole world... ha-ha)

If you want something with more protection, try one of these:

How bulky is this? I have the 2006 version of the red impact

How bulky is this? I have the 2006 version of the red impact short, and I can barely fit into my snowboarding pants. This looked like a slimmer fit. Also, can the pads be removed?

I remember that impact short, not so sweet!

This is completely different, its more of a compression fit. Times change quickly! you'll have no problem swinging these under your riding pants. I rock them (but don't tell my fiends) and I'm into that kooky tight pant fit.

Pads can't be removed... they are a fairly light-weight foam.
