Killer tarp!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought the siltarp3 three years ago, when the company was owned by Integral Designs. I used it as my shelter for my 500-mile thru hike on the Colorado Trail. It is lightweight and super waterproof (kept me dry during some wild Colorado thunder storms).

Recently ordered and received the siltarp2. It smaller and lighter, but the same high quality material. There are three tie-outs on each side, one at each corner, and one in the center of the ridge line (17 total), which is information I couldn't find online before ordering.

I was also surprised that it didn't include the seam sealant, like my previous tarp did. I called backcountry.com, and they gave me the number for Rab USA. The guy I talked to at RAB said he would put some sealant in the mail for me today.

Overall, great product. Highly recommended for lightweight backpacking or ultralight thru hiking.

Just received by new siltarp. It looks very light and strong, but I can't understand why there are no guy lines included....

Hey Ella,

I wish I had a good answer for you as to why Rab doesn't produce this with guy lines included. I am sure that their production team would have a better answer than anything I could come up with. Just like any retailer we just have to sell them how the manufacturer makes them.

Maybe check out this set we have, they are super easy to set up and really make strapping down your shelter a snap. www.backcountry.com/nite-ize-figure-9-tent-line-kit?ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6Z3V5IGxpbmVzOjE6MTpndXkgbGluZXM

Define "light rain." Will this tear and collapse in a moderate rain? Is it basically a square nylon tent rain fly with convenient tie-down loops? Will it replace my bulky 8x10 nylon tarp in a steady moderate rain?

Specifically,"light rain" is defined as about 0.10" per hour, so hopefully that gives you a better perspective on what to expect. But yeah, at 30D, it's roughly the same as an 8x10' square rain fly. With the denier rating of the rip-stop Cordura and the Hypalon reinforcements, it's not that it will tear and collapse in anything harder (assuming you're guyed out and draining off right), it's that the water will overwhelm the performance capabilities of the silicone impregnated into the nylon. If the specs for packed size/ weight are less than what you've got, and you know the limitations vs your ultimate needs, it should be as good or better than what you have now. Sil-nylon does pretty amazing stuff for what it is as a material, and Rab generally doesn't mess around with lame fabrics or construction. Hope this helps.
