For burly expeditions, winter alpinism, and those who plan on encountering the worst weather imaginable, Rab designed the Men’s Latok Jacket. This insanely durable heavyweight shell features three-layer eVent waterproof breathable fabric that ensures not a drop of the storm makes it inside. The full-coverage, helmet-compatible hood features a wired brim to keep your field of view clear, and the four outer and two interior pockets hold energy gels, sunscreen, and other alpine essentials.
Bottom Line: Epic protection worthy of the worst climbing conditions.
I've had this jacket (cardinal red in Med) for over 2yrs now and it's definitely my go-to hard shell jacket! the event is fantastic and can't be more pleased w/this jacket. whether hiking, climbing, skiing this will keep you dry and comfy all day! the side vents are most useful when it gets a little toasty and the hood is a perfect fit for any helmet!
The sizing is a good - like i mentioned, i've got the med. and it's a perfect fit for me. not too snug & a decent amount of room for layering (i'm 5'7 & ~150 lbs). i would like the cut to be a tad bit shorter for me but it still fits very well!! big fan of rab products!! arc'teryx are nice but just way to $$$ ...these days there are way too many options for good, quality gear.. i'll usually look for rab/mammut products first.
I'm looking for an absolute BOMBproof shell that can be very cool on hot humid days. I do field work regularly in dense undergrowth and am still trying to find the perfect jacket that keeps me as cool as possible but will also live up to tons of abuse. Any recommendations? Is this jacket good in really hot weather?
The Latok isn't the one. It's pretty rugged, but too hot. Try the Latok Alpine (item# RAB 0015). I own both, and that's usually what I recommend and wear when I need a jacket for more wet and humid conditions.

I purchased this in Azure (medium) two years ago. I have some 10 jackets, and this is my goto shell. It's amazing, what is more amazing is that I have grown, since that initial purchase, in the wrong direction. So, I sold the medium and grabbed a Large in Pois. HOLY BUCKETS~! This is the best shell I've ever had. I have Westcombs (I like), Arcteryx(s), Helly Hansens, Norrona, Mammuts.... but this one is the tank. Not as lightweight as the westcomb mirage, but amazingly strong. I also like the fact that there is not a powder skirt. All my other shells do, and I think this is a bonus for this jacket. Those skirts are overrated when wearing bibs. Anyway, this jacket is a lifetime jacket!
I have a small frame weighing in at 135 lb and standing at 5'6". Would a small be big enough to accomodate a regular base layer and a puffy down coat mid layer for my size? Thanks!
Great info Phil! I wish BC has the Latok Tour, as I think I like it better for skiing. Regardless, it is just a matter of time before I have an eVent jacket. By the way, whats up with all the horror stories about eVent leaking and requiring extensive maintenance and care (frequent washing and reproofing, etc.)?
You're welcome. I'm not personally familiar with the fit of the Mentor, but I do know the Alpha SV. That said, the sizing I recommended reflects your down mid layer. Without it, I would think the small would be a better fit. First off, you won't be disappointed with the eVent. An absolutely phenomenal material with excellent breathability and protection that will change the way you think about how your gear should perform. The Latok is a full-on extreme winter shell. If you need less, also have a look at the Latok Alpine. Not as roomy in the torso as the Alpha, but all in all, true to size-just ever so slightly on the smaller side of what you might be used to. The wired brim and draw cord on the hood are really user friendly. Front rides down just below your hips/harness line, and yes, the back drops significantly to cover just about your entire butt. Drawcord hem. Ample and well placed pockets that work well with a pack on. European left-hand zipper takes a little getting used to, but no big deal functionally. If you can find it on sale, great, but it's a shell that's well worth it at just about any price. Lastly, your own personal preferences aside, the Pois looks outstanding. Hope that helped you out a little more.
Thanks Phil for the info! I have quite a few Gore-Tex jackets so I would like to try an eVent one this time. I am waiting for it to go on sale before I take the plunge. FYI, I have a small OR Mentor, which fits me great. Wondering if this Latok is similar in fit as the OR Mentor? Also, does this jacket have excessive drop hem on the back like the Alpha SV? Any additonal info you can provide will be greately appreciated.
Check you're sleeve length first, but with the down mid layer, you might want to go up to the medium as your first choice. The Latok isn't tight, but it's also not an overly generous fit.
I read alot about the eVent fabric and was curious to try it. I took a half day hike in the woods this past weekend. It was about 50 degrees out and rain was off and on. During the hike I got rather warm, however, I did not get wet. The jacket performed admirably. It breathed well allowing my perspiration to escape and did not allow any rain to enter. I also walked through some underbrush that I was worried would tear the jacket. I am pleased to say that the jacket is very durable and did not have any problems.
Rab is an english company and the jacket sizes seem to run a little small. Check there sizing chart before you order so you get the right size. I normally wear a Large, however, I needed the XL.
I've worn alot of Gore tex in the past, however, I am sold on eVent and now of course on RAB.
Does this have a loose fit or an athletic fit? How would the fit compare to an Arc'teryx Alpha SV or Beta AR (newer Beta is about the same size as the Alpha).
I'm 6 ft and 174 lbs and find the XL to be the perfect size. It's a little loose to allow for underlayering, but doesn't look baggy even with a t-shirt. Sleeve size is perfect. Don't think i'd want a L. That would be a pretty trim fit, but honestly haven't tried one.
A loose fit if you size it right. I'm 6'-0" and about 190 and I wear a large over my Arcteryx Gamma SV softshell and a Capilene 3 base most of the time. If I was was inclined to need more layers, I would want an XL or the Alpha. If you primarily need rain gear, save few bucks and go with the Latok Alpine, although it will also do nicely for winter use under most conditions, but w/o pit zips and not quite as burly. Not by any means an athletic fit, but it is cut closer than my Alpha SV. Of the two, I definitely use the Rab the most. eVent is superb! Very user friendly brim and hood adjustment. Fantastic piece. Also have a look at the Westcomb Mirage (Swamp!).
I got this jacket last year, and it is my favorite. First, made of Event. The sizing is right, for me in all the right places. I like the added seat in the rear, and the draw to pull it up, if needed. The jacket has more room in the shoulders, and because of my stud-like build ;) it is great for layering. It's a great fit. I'm 5'10 and 170lbs. I go with the medium.
Thinking of buying this, looking for a eVent jacket, after spending a winter in a patagucci shell where it actually would snow inside the jacket, coating my fleece in snow. Sweat, wouldn't breath, condenses, snows inside jacket. Primary use will be tour ice skating and skiing w/ a kitewing, meaning I'll be regularly seeing apparent winds of 50-60mph, in well below freezing conditions, while working up a serious sweat. I'm concerned about the hood, is it not practical to wear this jacket w/o the hood pulled up? And also the lack of a powder skirt. What is the bottom hem like? Grip? Adjustments? Thanks!
The majority of Rab's products, including technical shells, are manufactured overseas, typically China. Their down items in the Expedition range are manufactured in the UK. It is also in the UK where their sleeping shells and bags are hand-filled. This is a quality eVent 3L shell, often these are made in China, production of such an item can only be done there. I'm not sure what this answer means to you, but this is an awesome jacket regardless of where it's made.
