Designed for lightweight alpine climbs and moderate summer mountaineering, the Rab Men\222s Latok Alpine Jacket is a masterpiece of minimalism. Made with three-layer waterproof breathable eVent shell fabric, the Latok seals out all forms of moisture without that dreaded plastic-bag feeling. High alpine pockets stay accessible while wearing a harness, and the helmet-compatible storm hood keeps spindrift from blowing down your neck.

Bottom Line: Complete alpine protection in a minimalist design.
I'm 5'10", 135 lbs. I generally prefer to have sleeves on the shorter side, and (obviously) I'm thin. I'd like to use it year round here in New England, so I'm trying to find a balance between room for layers, and a good fit for summer backpacking. I was thinking about getting a small, as one reviewer suggested sizing down if I wasn't sure what size to buy, and another saying that the body length is a little longer than a normal hip-length. As usual, reviews seem to give me mixed messages. Any suggestions?
Dan, I'm 6' 185 and can fit a medium. I don't have much room for layering, but just to give you a reference point. So, I really think a small would give you plenty of room for base and mid layers, as well as plenty of length. The reviewer is right; the body length is a bit longer, which is nice. It's an awesome piece!
Rab was never on my radar of brands to look at when choosing some technical clothing. Now I might be a loyalist. I have used this shell for a bunch of different things so far and it has far exceeded my expectations. I love how its very low key and you can wear this anytime without looking like you are going to tackle a mountain after you finish buying groceries. The quality of the construction is top-notch and inspires confidence that the price paid will be well worth it.
I have been in a few complete downpours in this jacket and it performs flawlessly. I love the wire brim hood because it helps keep the water from pouring down the hood into the jacket. It also is nice to have a hood that stays where you want it and not flopping in front of your face at the most inopportune moment. The material is more substantial feeling than some of the lightweight Gore-Tex options, but in my opinion breathes better than any of them. There are no pit zips and it does not need them. I sweat standing still and this jacket does an admirable job of keeping me as dry as can be reasonably expected. When I do start to heat up it is not long that I feel dry again.
I am 6' and weight 168lbs with a fairly athletic build and the Medium fits flawlessly. I had to return the Large I bought because it was well, large. I can fit a few thin layers or even my Stoic Breaker Fleece under it without sacrificing my range of motion. If you are between sizes like I was I would size down unless you plan to put lots of thick layers underneath.
I only wish that it packed down a little bit smaller, but that is just a nitpick and I highly recommend this jacket if you are thinking about buying it.
I wanted to comment again on this jacket after having it for over a year. I have used and abused this jacket and it still looks as new as when I opened up the box from Backcountry. When I first bought this jacket I only used it for "serious" excursions, but have found that it just begs to be used for any occasion. It has kept me warm and dry while skiing in Colorado during the winter season. I am a horrible skier and the fact it is not torn to shreds is actually a big compliment to Rab's construction and for a potential buyer to not fret that the face fabric will hold up. I have been up a few fourteeners and it blocked the wind and kept me from freezing when the cold air starts blowing on the ridges of the mountains. I have also been on numerous backpacking trips where it kept me dry and did not make me feel like I was in a personal sauna. I have even had days where it first snowed on me, then rained on me, and eventually turned sunny and warm and never had to take off the jacket or fuss with different layers, it regulates my body heat and perspiration exceptionally well. I essentially keep this jacket with me all the time now and use it for both outdoorsy endeavors and in my day to day routine.
If anyone is thinking about this jacket I can honestly tell you that if somehow I do manage to destroy this jacket, I will be ordering another one as soon as possible.

Had to return it due to its odd fit. I am 5'7, 135 and ordered a small. The sleeve and waist lengths fitted very nicely. Problem is the armpit area is disproportionately small and felt very restricted and uncomfortable with only a light sweater. Move up to medium and the lengths would be too long and the torso too wide. As a owner of Gore-Tex XCR (essentially Pro Shell?) and eVent jackets; the latter felt more comfortable. Bottom line: a great looking and high quality jacket but sadly, its' measurements does not work for me.
This Jacket is incredible don't get me wrong. I love everything about it other than that it felt really long on my body. I hate jackets that are really long because they always end up bunching up around my waist. If it weren't for that, I would of held on to it. As far as quality goes, the jacket seemed very well designed. EVent fabric is for real and the high zippers are a must for anyone using a harness.
Is this jacket suitable for skiing in cold/windy weather? I hear Event jackets are great at dumping heat but I'm wondering if they are good for days when you want to stay dry and warm. Thanks!
Just got this jacket in the mail and it seems pretty awesome. Good quality, lightweight. I'm 5'9 170lbs with 42" chest and the M is good with no layers. Could put a 200 weight fleece under it and it is a little too snug for me in the arm pits. I need it for layering so i had to return it. If you have broad shoulders i doubt this would work for you very well. If you're 5'9 average build with 39-40" chest which is average this would be a great jacket to own. 5 stars cuz if i was built like most people this would be an amazing jacket to own.
This jacket is great! --has served me well in the alpine and backpacking environs. bomber construction, breathes the best of any hard-shell I've had, good waterproof zippers, smart pocket placement, hood is stellar.
I'm looking to replace my old hardshells (old LL Bean garbage bags) with something a lot more comfortable and versatile. Ideally I'd like to get something suitable for four season use in New England. Obviously there is no true "4-season" solution but I'd like something I could use for spring-summer-fall and some winter (ie day trips and overnights, nothing too brutal). I've basically narrowed it down to the OR Foray and the Rab Latok Alpine. Would appreciate some input...
I'm not necessarily impressed with PacLite, and I expect and need a different degree of protection for my torso/core than I do for my legs, but all in all, I've been relatively happy with my OR Forays in what I need them for. My main gripe is that they tend to soak through a little on the butt and thighs when I'm sitting around camp in the rain or climbing hills. They do have a 3/4 zip, but only one back pocket though.
As for that, you're getting pretty limited in selection when it comes to meeting your requirements...good pants with full zips and ample pockets are hard to find, but another RAB product that might suit you are the Alpine Tour Pants. Lighter than the Latoks (12oz vs 26oz), a little less durable but still plenty tough, good waterproofing, thigh pockets, articulated and reinforced knees, 3/4 zip.
Phil, Thanks so much for your answer (on both pages no less!). I'll definitely be getting the Rab jacket. Wondering if you had any suggestion about pants -- the Latok Alpine pants don't have full zips or pockets and from the reviews the fit would not be great for me anyways (big legs). The Latok pants are too heavy for multi-season use...
As someone who owns a pair of Foray pants, as well as this jacket, there is absolutely no question in my mind whatsoever that the protection offered by eVent and RAB is far and away superior to Gore-Tex PacLite. You'll absolutely come to rely on and appreciate this jacket. For the uses you outlined, this is the one....buy it.
I've only had this jacket for a short time so it hasn't received much trail testing yet but I'm impressed so far. The first day I had it out, it poured all day long and the jacket kept me dry and comfortable. The wire brimmed hood is especially nice.
I can definitely tell this jacket breathes well and it definitely kills Gore-Tex XCR but I'm not ready to say yet whether I think it outperforms Gore-Tex Pro.
The cut of the jacket is perfect - pretty athletic with some room for layering. I could wear a high-loft fleece or down sweater under this with no problems. The hood, while easily accommodating for someone wearing a helmet, also cinches down nicely for everyday use. The sleeves and waist are perfect length. I'm 5'11" and 160 lbs and the medium fits me perfectly.
I was a little worried about the durability of the material and while it's not quite as substantial as the Arc'Teryx SV jackets, it's no less substantial than the Beta AR and it features a nice ripstop fabric.
So far, I'm happy with it. I can't wait to really put it to the test with a pack and some steep hills. I tend to sweat a lot under moderate conditions.
I have had the jacket for about 3 months now and no complaints about it, it has worked exceptionally for me so far. i was just wondering if anyone had any information about how they washed their jacket because the tag says wash often. it says for best performance frequent washing and drying is recommended. well how often is "often" is that maybe once a month? once every two months? just curious about what would be best for the jacket. Thanks
Nice, huh? I don't wash on any sort of fixed schedule. More or less depends on how often I use it and what I subject it to- maybe 2-4 times per year. The dirt messes with the fabric, cleaning it and the heat from the dryer rejuvenates it. It does however go into the dryer on medium heat for 1/2 hour or so before every trip. Maybe once a year, wash it with some Nikwax Tech Wash, followed by some TX Direct. I like the spray-on best.
Event fabric is fantastic. I've never felt more comfortable in a hardshell. It's so good, I don't worry about layering up with a softshell for approaches anymore. I get sweaty on the hike in to ice climb, and dry out quickly enough that I don't get clammy standing at the belay. It's really the perfect system. The sleeves are longer than average, perfect for climbing. The length is good, 3/4 length. A little longer than a Arcteryx Alpha, but not as long as the Theta Jacket (I think). The high pockets are mountaineering focused. My only gripe is the chin guard over the zipper, it doesn't stay flat well enough. In fact the entire neck area is somewhat poorly shaped for me. And the roll away hood is fairly useless for me. The neck gets so bulky you can't do much with it. I see the purpose, but it's not something I need. Oh, and there's no Goretex crinkle! The fabric is quiet.
Nope, none at all. I laid mine out on the floor just now to verify it. Great jacket, straight cut...go for it.
BTW- From your other question on the Latok- I've never heard of or experienced anything but positive things with eVent. Every fabric has its disciples and detractors...but some of us just like what works. All waterproof shells need to be cleaned and rejuvenated from time to time. As for eVent vs Gore-Tex- I'll take my eVent any day.
Could somebody tell me whats the length of this jacket from the bottom of the collar to the bottom hem? Or if its a waist length, hip length, or thigh length jacket? I am 6ft 3 in. and 175# and was hoping for something closer to the length of a theta sl and any recommendations in size would greatly be appreciated? Thanks in advance for any help
My large measures just under 29" at the center back. I'm 6'-0" and it comes to about 4" below my hips in the front. Excellent jacket. Works and fits well. My favorite.
I spent months looking around for and researching jackets online and after debating between the Patagonia Stretch Alpine and the Rab I decided on the Rab.
I've been out a few times with it so far, mostly skiing with some backpacking and have been impressed. I'm 6' 135 lbs and the medium fits well with room for layers. I probably could have gotten away with the small.
The hood is excellent, not big enough for a ski helmet but it'll work great for any climbing helmet. I haven't found myself wishing for pit zips yet either. Haven't had any rain yet but it has performed great in wet snow.
Phil has already answered this question, but I feel it is worth seconding for anyone else who may be considering the jacket. I have had numerous hard falls skiing and there have been absolutely no marks or abrasions to the fabric. I have had a pretty bad spill while hiking and thought for sure the rocks had cut up my jacket, not so. I just dusted it off and it was good as new. I also agree with its ability to keep out snow, just pull on the elastic draw cords and I have never had snow come in from below the waist while skiing.
Yes, I bushwhack and scramble with mine all the time. It's held up without so much as a snag for a couple of years now. Besides being durable, it does a great job with keeping out rain and snow, and the breathability of the fabric is excellent.
I decided to buy this jacket based on the positive reviews from backcountry, and I they did not let me down. I am an avid hiker and backpaker in new york state, not a mountaineer and so I have spent many years purchasing and using inferior shells because I felt I wouldn't need a higher end jacket for my intended uses. After being let down and mislead by many companies claims of breath-ability and cooking in my jackets or having the facefabric breakdown and seams come undone, I decided to invest in one of those "alpine jackets." I have not been let down, and would highly recommend this jacket to anyone who does not let the weather determine whether they go or not, because this jacket functions wonderfully in all the weather conditions I have used it in, from 45deg rain, to backpacking in 20mph winter winds in Harriman state park this winter.
With this being said, I would recommend this jacket to anyone who needs a jacket for four season, all weather use. In fact, it is so breathable you wont mind bringing it with you as a windbreaker on sunny windy days. The face fabric is a ripstop which has held up great to a fall and ten foot slide down an icy hill as well as onto a log in the rain. The inner fabric is a little coarser and more like a cotton stitch (hope this makes sense) than the rubber laminate found on other shells. It is much more comfortable against the skin. The build and design of the jacket (mens medium) is great for me being 5'10" and 150lbs. The hood, collar, and sleeves are all exceptionally functional and allow complete protection and a full range of movement. The only two things to consider with this jacket are the sleeve size and the stitching. The sleeves are a little narrow, which will limit your layering. I can wear a 200wt fleece underneath but notice a little restriction while flexing. This does not bother me but I could see it causing problems for other people. Second, the jacket is only single stitch. I am not sure why a 300$, alpine jacket would only have single stitching, perhaps it is because the seam taping adds durability(?), but it does make me worry about how long the seem stitches will last, especially while looking at older jackets of mine where seems stitches have broken down. Also, because of this I try not to use this jacket for everday use, which is a little silly. With all this being said, it is not a miracle membrane but it works so well that with a little pacing you dont get overwhelmed and feel like your cooking. This means I can go longer and happier. Overall I love this jacket. Dont let the intended use of this jacket deter you from buying it, while it is built for "summer mountaineering" the functionality of this jacket makes it a worthwhile purchase for any outdoor enthusiast.
One you go to eVent you will never go back to gore!!! This shell did great on a 4 day climbing trip in AK. Due to weight being an issue i left my Soft Shell behind and went with the Latok. While my partner was sweating bullets on the climbs in his Gore Pro shell I was set. Pit zips a concern? Not an issue!!! I felt like I was in a soft shell with the water protection of a hard shell. You can't go wrong with Rab. Step out of the main stream brands and into RAB
I'm 6'-0", 190lbs, 42" chest, 34" sleeve and a large fits me well with a softshell underneath. A lot depends on your chest and sleeve measurements, your preference as to fit, as well as just what you plan to layer with, but I'm going to go ahead and point you toward the XL.
Excellent choice! You'll be really happy with the quality and performance of this piece. Everything else was quickly retired after I had a chance to test it out in a wide variety of weather conditions this last winter.
This jacket is bomber, the guys at RAB literally thought of everything. It zips very high to cover your chin completely, and keep rain/snow/whatever from going down your jacket. It is light weight, weighing in at only 16oz. and the high hand pockets make accessing your stuff easy no matter what is around your waist. The external pockets also have zipper flaps on the inside, along with a waterproof zipper to make sure that your essentials never get wet. The hood is completely compatible to a head or a helmet, and it can adjust in 2 places (one in the back, and two pull strings in the front). The event technology cannot be beat. I had a goretex paclite before this and it was like wearing a plastic bag compared to this. Also the arms are long enough for me since I am 6'2" 195lbs. (I ordered a large) and there is tons of fabric underneath your arms so that when you lift them above your head the jacket barely rides up, it will a little if you try, but not enough to complain about. The only thing that takes a little getting used to is that it zips Euro-style, meaning the zipper is on the left which can be a bit foreign to guys, but you get over it/used to it very fast. One last thing that I think sets this jacket apart, is the fact that the brim of the hood is a moldable wire that you can curve to whatever suits your activity best. It is small details like this that make RAB among the best.
I'm similar in size to you with 36" sleeves and an XL was OK with no layers (but still a bit tight in the torso and short in the sleeves--but nothing you couldn't live with). Keep in mind the sleeves are somewhat narrow, so if you want to layer I would go with a 2XL.
Great shell... simple and clean lines. Fits very well. I'm 6ft 155lbs with long arms and the cut is perfect with either one layer or four/five. Event stuff works. Durable material and moves with you better tahn goretex. Love it.
If you are anything like me you have spent the better part of your outdoor carreer swearing by Gore~Tex and its many redeeming qualities. Brace yourselves, my brand faithful compadres. An invasion is coming from across the pond and outerwear as we know it will never be the same. Those savvy Brits at Rab have completely outdone themselves in making the Latok Alpine shell. Constructed from 3 layer eVent fabric so breathable that pit vents are a thing of the past. A moldable visor is just the icing on the cake, topping off a hood roomy enough and versatile enough to fit over any helmet. Two napoleon pockets replace the old fashioned stash pockets (useless when climbing or hiking as the waist belt on your pack covers them anyhow). Fully sealed zips, ample room in the torso, two interior mesh pockets, waist cinch and velcro cuffs complete this Scottish juggernaut. In short, the Latok Alpine is the perfect pairing of advanced fabrics and minimalism at its finest.
This is a great jacket in so many ways. Love the breathability, the wire brim on the hood is awsome. My only gripe is the fit of the jacket through the shoulders/chest. I am 6'1" 205lbs and wear a 44" chest suit. The jacket in XL fit is tight through the shoulders/chest. It feels tight, even without a thick underlayer and it is a bit baggy through the torso. All in all, still a good jacket, but if you are barrel chested, you may want to consider other options.
matt, thanks so much for your comment. i've been checking out this jacket and searching for someone with a similar size. i am also 6'1 205 lbs, 44 chest. i was going to buy this jacket, based on all the other positive aspects, and hope for the best. I would have been sorely disappointed, as proper fit is paramount to me--tightness prevents layering, and looseness equals heat loss, not to mention that neither look good :) So again, thanks a mil. Joel
Can anyone compare the face fabric of this to the Alpha LT? Never dealt with event, but really interested in it. Looking at this or the SV, and I know the face fabric probably isn't as good as the SV, but I cant find nothing on the denier of this fabric. The weight is over the LT but under SV, so i figured that might be a base line comparison, no?
Got this jacket for wet northwestern hikes and bumming around Seattle. it hasn't once disappointed. 3L eVent is as waterproof as it gets, while still remaining exceptionally breathable. waterproof zippers and taped seams add comfort, and underarm zippers do the trick when i'm hoofing it. Sizing is generally for a leaner more athletic build, but allows for an insulation layer underneath. only reason i gave it four stars is because i wish it was a little less expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for!
I'm 5'9" 200lbs. I wear a a 44-45 suit. I ordered an XL and had to send it back. Didn't fit in the shoulders with only a base layer. Construction looked good, but expected at this price.
Agreed, XL is too small. I'm a 43 chest with 36" arms, and the XL does not work--too tight thru the upper torso, especially with arms extended forward. Forget about layering anything remotely bulky under this, as the sleeves are narrow too. All in all, it's hard to believe the designed this as an alpine shell, since it does not play nice with layers.
Rab was never on my radar of brands to look at when choosing some technical clothing. Now I might be a loyalist. I have used this shell for a bunch of more...
Had to return it due to its odd fit. I am 5'7, 135 and ordered a small. The sleeve and waist lengths fitted very nicely. Problem is the armpit area more...
