Why We Like The Rab Expedition 1200 Sleeping Bag

There's no point in sugar-coating it: Rab built its lightweight Expedition 1200 -31 Degree Down Sleeping Bag for 6000-meter peaks, polar regions, and the worst weather you can find. The 1200 is packed with over 2.5 pounds of the highest quality 850-fill goose down, which has been treated with a hydrophobic treatment and wrapped between water-resistant, rugged, and incredibly lightweight layers of Pertex Microlight and Pertex Endurance fabrics. Both the inside and outside of the bag have been finished with water-repellent DWR treatments because condensation, blowing snow, and spilled drinks are intrinsic to alpine tent life.

The 1200 is slightly bigger than standard mummy bags in order to accommodate down clothing when you need extra warmth to make it through the night; although, the bag is rated to a staggering -31 degrees Fahrenheit. Longitudinal baffles at the feet and chest use Flowgate technology to minimize down migration, which can cause cold spots, while the angled foot box provides ample room for even big-footed sleepers. The 1200 also features an internal collar to seal out any cold drafts, an adjustable hood, a 3/4-length no-snag zipper on the left side, and internal drawcords to keep the bag snug across your body while you bunker down against the raging storm.

Warm bag, yet there’s better options

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

If you’re considering this bag, consider buying a feathered friends bag instead or something along those lines with a similar price point. Like I said warm bag, but after a few uses the goose down is seeping out through the poorly and cheaply stitched seams. I should add that I have been extremely careful when using this bag as it’s $800! When I use it to sleep outside I always sleep with it in a bivy so as to avoid damaging the bag. Yet with careful regular use the seams are failing. If you’re looking For a long term investment look elsewhere!

warm!!! comfy!! dry!!

I ve had an expedition 1200 for 3 years now. I used it during harsh winter conditions on the hardangervida in Norway (februari-march). temp got down to -30 C. , on 5800 m on peak lenin and several other minor occasions. It's warm, comfortable, roomy for stuff you want to (keep) dry and warm (sat.phone). It is perfect for these trips. The thing I fear most is the down getting wet during these trips. No problem at all. The weight is great for that comfort.

I have wanted an expedition

I have wanted an expedition bag for about 20 years. I have worked in the outdoor retail industry off and on for those 20 years, but the stars never aligned and the perfect bag never quite made it into my gear bag... until now. In Australia I had coveted the Mountain Designs Verglas back in the 90’s when their bags were still made in Australia. Then when I moved to the states I had my eye on the Western Mountaineering Puma GWS, but decided I wanted something warmer, then it was the Marmot CWM. Honestly, I hadn’t heard much about Rab, until a couple came into the store where I work in Montana. They were both wearing very awesome and puffy down jackets. I love technical gear, I’m a gear head, so I started asking them questions about their jackets. They were Rab reps and happy to answer my questions and tell me about their company. I was impressed with what they had to say and with the quality and features of their jackets. They recommended I check out the Rab website, when I told them I was searching for a good bag, so I jumped online as soon as I got home. The Rab line of gear is impressive and after researching their bags and comparing them to the ones I had been eyeing for nearly 20 years, I chose the Expedition 1200. I received the bag very quickly and it arrived nicely packaged with a large stuff sack for use outdoors and a oversized cotton bag for storage. The bag itself is impressive!!! The quality of the materials and workmanship is exceptional. I love the lightweight Pertex Endurance outer and soft Perez Microlight inside. The hood and neck baffle are nice and lofty and the draft tube along the zipper will ensure there are no leaks. My husband and I are looking forward to exploring Yellowstone and returning to Alaska to explore on our touring skis and this bag will keep me plenty warm. I will post a second review once I’ve been out and used the bag, but so far I couldn’t be happier with the Expedition 1200... finally the stars aligned!!

Back to Ladakh

I've just returned from a high altitude camp at 4,500m in Ladakh - thanks to RAB for producing such a fantastic sleeping bag. I'm quite tall but found the E1200 quite spacious and with a generous hood to keep me warm with -25C temperatures outside. It would be good if it came with more of a compression sack than just a stuff sack - it's a big pack so compressing it down more would be helpful in my opinion.
