Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These trousers are my favorite piece of outdoor clothing. I take them rock climbing, backcountry skiing, and resort skiing and on cooler hikes and treks. I wear a size 8-10 in pants, and the medium is perfect: comfortable with or without a pair of long underwear. They are a little smaller in the waist compared to other Norrona trousers I've tried, but the others are all too big for me in medium. The fabric is great, keeping me warm in the snow and wind but cool enough when it gets a bit warmer than expected. I get tons of compliments whenever I wear them, which doesn't hurt my feelings towards them either!

I bought these trousers because I adore my Norrona softshell trousers, but these are enormous in the same size (M). I usually have trouble finding trousers that fit because I have enormous quads and no waist or butt. The softshell trou were so perfect that I thought these would be too...but I couldn't even shrink these on high heat to get them to fit. Fabulous fabric though and cute pink zippers. Wish I'd ordered a small as these trousers are just what I wanted...if I grew about 5 inches on my waist.

I love Patagonia's R1 material. It's the perfect layer for the fall and spring and great for chilly mountain mornings. But, when they call this cut "slim fit," they really mean it. I usually wear a medium in Patagonia (including a "slim fit" softshell jacket that I adore) but there's no way my shoulders and lats (39 inches) were fitting into this medium. I tried a large on in a store and that was way too big, so I guess I'm out of luck. I have a more square-cut men's one already, which is why I can attest to the awesomeness of the fabric, but I wish I could get one fitted to me!

I own three of these duffels in various sizes and colors. "Colors" because I discovered that black is not conducive to finding anything in your bag. But, as to why I need to give it only four stars and put a warning out there: my two-year-old Large duffle just fell apart quite spectacularly. Coming back from Patagonia I found it on the luggage carousel with all my stuff falling out. The zipper had blown. And, no, it wasn't overfilled at all. Granted, this bag has been around the world a few times and not had a soft life. After two years of travel, the seams were fraying and the rubbery fabric was scratched up galore, but I did think it was going to last a little bit longer... I'm going to be exploring some other brands.

This was one of my best purchases ever. I have always stuffed clothes into a stuff sack for a pillow, but I splurged on this little (medium) fellow for a trek in Venezuela and travel in Brazil. It gave me so many wonderful nights of sleep...on the plane and on monster layovers in tropical airports, in crappy Brazilian hotels, and, most of all, on a 6-day backpacking trip in Venezuela. I've always thought people who brought pillows were wimps: not any more. On this trip it was well worth the extra weight. It's amazing how this little thing "blows up" into a proper pillow and smushes down to nothing when you put it away. Everyone else was green with envy.

I love this t-shirt. Soft and well-fitted. I have it in my normal size (M) unlike some other Icebreaker products where I need to go up a size. I have the color mystic, but beware, it's more purple than the image here suggests. I love the color, but if you're looking for a true blue, you might be disappointed.

I so wanted to love these shoes! I usually wear 5.10's for approach shoes, but I was looking for something more durable and comfortable for the true "approach" bit. The scarpa zen's are definitely good looking and they seem very robust and well made, but the toe box was simply too tight no matter how much I played with the lacing. If you're cursed with my feet (very wide at the toes and very narrow at the heel), you might have a similar problem.

Don't get me wrong, I love this jacket. It keeps you warm when you need it but doesn't overheat you when the day starts getting warmer. I love skiing (downhill) with it because it's not too bulky and it is fantastic at regulating your temperature. However, it has a couple of drawbacks. First, it frays. I took it backpacking for its first trip and it began to fray at the cuffs and at the stitching almost immediately. Skiing with it under a shell protects it. Second, I had to order a size up because the arms were so short! I'm only 5'6" but if I lift my arms in a medium, the cuffs are too short for the jacket to be truly useful. I prefer it bigger also because the jacket doesn't give much and my shoulders get better range of motion. In short, if I wanted this jacket to look good, I'd go with a medium, but as I want it to be seriously functional, I'm buying another in large; to heck with what I look like in it. For true use, this jacket is simply awesome; but I'll admit, I really wish I could wear a medium and look good in it, too! Of course, then I'd have to look at the annoying fraying,,,
