Ohh the internal debate - 4 stars or 5 stars???? Let me make it clear I absolutely love this biner. I love the fact that you cannot cross load it, I love the fact that the plastic clip won't shut unless the screwgate is done up, I love its simplicity and I love the smoothest action you can find on any screwgate commercially made. (DMM do make amazing screwgates - FACT!!)

So why 4 stars? The only reason I gave it four stars is because the plastic clip can be detached from the biner and lost. Over the last three or so years that I've been using mine only once has the plastic clip been twisted off the biner when I had it attached to one of my gear loops (maybe I should learn to always clip it fully closed but when I'm not belaying I sometimes leave it simply closed on a gear loop). Luckily, at the time it fell, not only did I notice it had been knocked off but also it fell somewhere where I could pick it up and re-attach it, ie it didn't fall 200feet down a rock face. I have also heard about one guy who had his plastic clip nicked in Camp 4 - not good! I guess the reason DMM manufacture it like this is so that you can take the clip off and use it like a normal biner but I never need that, I have a bunch of Shadows for that. Also when you compare it to a Girdlock, you cant take the metal piece off that - there's no 'semi' dual use for that biner, so I would say you could make the plastic clip a more permanent feature.

Like I said though - this is an awesome biner and I wouldn't trade mine in for any other (Gridlock or anything). I'm currently thinking about getting one (two?) more to use with a Silent Partner.

..but these bad boys truly deserve it. They really are a joy to use, the gate action is so smooth and the biner is so nice and light, but it also feels strong and reliable. I have owned a few of the screw gates for a few years now (they are my de-facto biner for anchors). I have only just ordered a locksafe one now so comment on that one but the screwgates at $13.90 are good value I would say, based on the quality of the product.

If people are wondering what the difference is between the Zodiac and the Shadows, the Zodiac is slightly bigger, a bit heavier and a bit stronger (32Kn major axis versus 24Kn on the Shadows per Backcountry specs). The two are very similar and the size differential is not that noticeable, both are excellent and you can decide which one is more suitable for your own use but I think both of them are top of their game.

Big Bird AZ wrote a review of this product which I agree with, and I'm surprised a lot of other gave this item 5*'s. Dont get me wrong this is a great little product, but the two issues I have with this item are 1) it's just a bit too expensive - yes I know it's Titanium and all that but at the end of a day its just a coffee filter, and 2) it doesn't keep all the grounds out of your coffee.

The fact that the filter lets some of the coffee through isn't really a problem, because as you sip away these grinds sink to the bottom of the cup and you don't drink them, but the filter does seem to be manufactured ever so slightly too small for the carafe.

I also agree that the grinds get stuck between the wire mesh and the filter which is a minor irritation.

The other point to make though is that I'm not too sure this is a great item to be taking on trips where weight and space savings are critical. I'm off to NZ soon and I think I'll be taking my GSI collapsable java drip instead because a) it is lighter and b) it takes up a lot less space, but I'm still experimenting with this stuff.

Like I said it is a great product, I do like it a lot, it is very light and as far camping equipment goes it is quite sexy, but I think a lot of people have the 'ohhhhh its titanium it must good' belief, and give it 5*'s, each to their own I suppose......
