Badass Approach/Hiker
5 5

I brought my new Salewa's along on a 3-week trip to Europe with the intent of using them only while hiking in the Swiss Alps. I ended up using them nearly every day of the trip as they were far more comfortable for sightseeing days than the street shoes I packed.

I prefer the speediness and comfort of a lower-cut shoe, only going with mids when I have to. I carried a 15-20 lb. pack in the Alps and the Salewa's performed exceptionally well. In dry conditions they grip like a Porsche, which made me more comfortable than I usually am on exposed trails. However I will say that once I hit the snow line or crossed a creek, they got fairly slick.

I agree with Salewa's claim that this is a great cross between an approach shoe and a day-hiker. On ascents these shoes are absolutely perfect. I wore them on a couple of day-long peak-bagging hikes over grass, dirt, gravel, scree, etc, going up, down, and sideways, walking, side-stepping & scrambling, and I never felt my feet once. And the reinforced rubber toe & kevlar sides was a nice touch - they got through some sharp boulders no worse for wear.

The other posters made great comments about the lacing, fit & construction that I completely agree with. I'm a size 11 with an average width, & I had to go up to a 11.5 to compensate for the narrowness. If you have wide feet or prefer a roomier fit, be advised. Had a couple of fit issues at first until I discovered that changing the lacing completely changes the shoe. I now have zero fit issues. The narrow-fit really makes it more comfortable on steep approaches & for scrambling.

As nice as they are, I will probably shelve these shoes until my next trip to the mountains. They aren't cheap, and I feel they're a bit too much shoe for the timid trails of NE Ohio. No need to wear them out on flat terrain ;)
